Don't laugh, I've just found out what 'customise' means

Being a computer genious confused. I have spent hours of wasted time following threads, 2 ruddy years plus.

I am a happy bunny I now start at the end, is that the right term it sounds so odd.

Anymore 'tips' from any of you clever GN's. I don't think I am alone in being a bit of a computer virgin.

Oh..... I never thought of that.
I have made my way through some threads that have 100s of posts just to get the true picture.

Lona Wed 01-Oct-14 13:15:01

Isn't the point to read the threads? confused

POGS Wed 01-Oct-14 13:16:10

Coolgran

You were right to start from the beginning as threads change so quickly from the meaning or question raised in the OP.

Having read it all and understanding how and what your input should be I have now felt a right fool to think I have never understood how easy it is to 'pick up where I left off'. blush

Glad to know at least one other GN is not a genious. smile

Oh, I always have my threads ready flipped. Read the latest post and if it sounds interesting, go back a bit.

And of course, it's ideal for continuing conversations.

Don't worry POGS. You'll get there. smile

wink!

Ana Wed 01-Oct-14 13:20:51

Do you mean the bookmark facility, POGS? I don't like that, I'd rather just scroll back...

POGS Wed 01-Oct-14 13:33:35

Ana

Your asking a lot grin

I have never veered off pressing which thread I want but then I have had page 1 come up from the thread beginning and then I have pressed last page and waited. Obviously a busy thread will perhaps have moved forward a couple of pages so I 'fanny around' trying to get to where I left the thread. A lot of 'fannying around' in some GN sittings grin

I pressed customise today and now I know, what I am sure a lot of you do, that I can now access a thread from the last post, not the very first and I chose 50 posts not 25.

I think I am continuing to make myself look a bit of a plank but I might just help somebody who like me doesn't have computer experience or worry they will cock things up by trying out something new.

I think POGS means the "reading direction" option you get when you click on customise.

It does mean that, whilst most posters refer to posts "further up the thread", for you it is "further down".

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 01-Oct-14 13:37:10

I can't stand "pages"!

Ana Wed 01-Oct-14 13:37:24

I just click on Active, go to the thread and then click on last page.

I do have 50 posts to a page though, makes scanning easier.

POGS Wed 01-Oct-14 13:39:42

Jings

Thanks, that summed it up.

It does start to sound like a comedy sketch now 'start at the last', 'further up the thread' means 'further down the thread'. grin

I really recommend that you should try the bookmark option, POGS. After selecting the option under 'customise', you can then always go to the bottom right hand corner of the last post you have read, before leaving a thread. As you hover, the word 'bookmark' will appear to be clicked to save. Next time you choose the thread you will be taken directly to that post. Avoids hours of scrolling through things you have read before!
I am a technonumpty blush, sometimes finding out things by accident, sometimes following tips from others like you. Good luck!

Beat me too it sal! I book mark too. sunshine

Most councils in the UK run classes for retirees to become more 'au fait' with computer use, with support - that's brilliant.

grannyactivist Wed 01-Oct-14 14:31:35

Another one here who bookmarks. I like to read the last two or three posts again to remind myself of where I was up to. smile

POGS Wed 01-Oct-14 16:17:22

Thanks

I will try that.

Didn't understand what it meant so I never bothered. Any more hints anybody for those of us who need lessons.

Another useful one if you want to go back to something you have posted on, is the 'I'm on' button at the top. Took me quite a while to spot that blush

kittylester Wed 01-Oct-14 17:33:34

I did try 'flipping' but it confused me so I stopped and use bookmarks instead!

POGS Wed 01-Oct-14 18:14:41

Kitty

The 'flip' thingy never worked for me either. confused

I will try your suggestion, thanks smile

Getting on really well with this now.

One thing I find annoying is, as it all works backwards, if you want to post you have to go to the top of the page to remind yourself of the last post. It would make sense if the message box also had a mirror image. E.g at the top of the page. Does that make sense.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 01-Oct-14 18:27:50

Just click on "flip", then the latest post shows right above the message box

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 01-Oct-14 18:28:28

Once you've added your post, it goes back to the way you've customised it.

kittylester Wed 01-Oct-14 18:36:00

Wow,jing I didn't know that - I've only been here about 3 years though!!

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 01-Oct-14 18:38:40

Did you not do an apprenticeship on Mumsnet? grin

Lona Wed 01-Oct-14 18:38:55

I didn't know that either jings

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 01-Oct-14 18:39:32

I have grown old on this computer. grin Bit like Miss Haversham.
