Playing the 'glad game'.

When I was young I watched Pollyanna - can't remember the exact storyline, I think she broke her leg or some such, but she played the 'glad game' - another way of counting blessings - to cheer herself up.

Over the years we have joked about playing the glad game in the family at times, particularly because we have had some very difficult losses to deal with, but we have also realised the benefits of it. I am in need of it at the moment as I am experiencing a distressing delay in getting back to work due to a **** bureaucratic delay in completing necessary paperwork. So whilst I am trying not to panic about finances, and I am struggling with a growing sense of daytime isolation and lack of purpose ... here is a my glad list:

Time to see my new GS and family weekly - will change to every 3 / 4 weeks once back in work
Saving on decent perfume - why bother with no-one to appreciate it?
Saving on petrol
Time to cook thrifty, but yummy dinners
Time to pootle - which I won't get back again for ages once I get a .n.other permanent teaching job

Ah, if only life could be balanced in the future and I could earn enough AND be the person /I would like to be - that will have to wait another decade methinks ...

If you are in need of the glad game, what might lift your spirits today?

Hello imperfect27

I do hope all the bureaucracy is sorted out soon and good for you for appreciating the silver linings. I love a good pootle.

I for one am glad of spellcheck so I can spend bureaucracy grin

I am also quite grateful for the drizzly rain because it makes my coffee smell and taste even better.

My problems are nothing compared to your struggle with bureaucracy Imperfect - and I hope it all sorts itself out very quickly - but I'm rather selfishly feeling very sorry for myself with a streaming cold and chesty cough that has stayed with me for over 3 days now and doesn't seem to be getting any better ?. So here is my glad list:

I have a wonderful DH who looks after me and will cook me some simple meals
I can sit down without guilt and watch my box set of House ?
I'll have time to do my Futurelearn course on Screenwriting ( I' m not really sure why I'm doing it except it seemed a good idea at the time)
I can have a lie-in in the morning while DH takes the dogs for a walk

Imperfect27 Wed 02-Mar-16 11:23:06

petitpois, I am also glad because I had all the time in the world to check how to spell bureaucracy grin.

Badenkate, you reminded me about guilt-free TV ... I had forgotten the box set of Downton Abbey my daughter has just given me for my birthday. See - this works, /I really am smiling now! smile smile smile

Reasons to be glad:

A husband who loves me to bits and looks after me.

3 lovely sons who are independent, rounded individuals (nothing to do with me!) and 3 lovely step children

1 granddaughter (almost 14) and a step grandson of 9 months

2 loving if exasperating dogs who greet me as if I've been gone for months when I've only been cleaning the bathroom!

Good health

Probably lots more, must take time tore member them!

Thanks Imperfect for reminding me there are lots of good things in life

I was just thinking about counting our blessings after hearing someone on TV say we don't realise when we're happy, but we know when we're unhappy (something like that!) and I thought how true that is, so thanks Imperfect for starting this thread and I hope you get sorted soon. flowers

My reason to be glad today is my husband has agreed we can get another dog. We lost our last dog over two years ago (best we ever had) and I miss having a dog so much. I didn't exactly wear my husband down, but it was making me unhappy. So the other reason for me to be glad today is I have a husband who has put my feelings before his about something he felt quite strongly. It was our 30th wedding anniversary yesterday too.

Think I need to do this every day.

I am glad that I was born in a country that has an N.H.S. Clean drinking water and indoor sanitation.
I am glad that my DC and GC are safe and well.
I am glad that we have Gransnet!

I loved Pollyanna as a child and read it many times. I think i drove my mother mad by telling her ahe should play the glad game whenever she complained About anything! But i do think its a good idea to count your blessings from time to time.
Here's my list:
I had a very happy childhood
I have been happily narried for 46 years
I have 3 adult married children who all keep in touch and 6 lovely grandchildren
My husband and I are both in good health and reasonably comfortably off (now- we struggled for years!)

When i read some of the posts on Gransnet i feel so lucky and also guilty that i have such a good life. Itales me feel i shouldnt moan and groan about trivialities!

I am glad because husband and I are healthy, we can pay the bills and have two lovely grandchildren.

Gs is 5 this year and gd 3 and we get to see them 2/3 times a week at the moment.

I have the time to potter and take time to watch the birds in the garden, since I retired something I never seemed to have time to do before. We have goldfinches that come to the feeders they are beautiful.

It took a while to wind down but I am glad I do not have stress of having to keep up with the technology changes at work.

I have to make an effort to think positively so this thread is brilliant. We are really lucky to live in a peaceful country.

I'm glad we have, for the greater part of my lifetime, had a National Health Service to be proud of; and I hope to carry on being glad of it for the rest of my life - call it my dotage!

rubylady Thu 03-Mar-16 03:10:22

I'm glad I live in a country with seasons.

I am glad that we have recordable tv (or 24 hour tv) for when I am up in the night, like now.

I am glad that I have the most comfortable bed, when I am able to sleep in it.

I am glad that I have the loveliest doggie in the world who very cleverly wrapped my Mother's Day presents up earlier.

I am glad for tea. (What would we do without it?)

PRINTMISS Thu 03-Mar-16 08:11:37

I am glad, that when I feel 'down' I can look back on all the great things that have happened, and all the things I still have which many people my age do not. I that being 'smug' do you think - I sometimes feel it is, but I am truly grateful.

Imperfect27 Thu 03-Mar-16 08:19:23

Just thankful I think PRINTMISS - unless you tell everyone else about it loudly and in great detail and without asking how they are doing grin.

Still no work for me atm so today I am reminding myself that

My DH loves me and is very supportive

My DS1 has just got a F/T job

I live in lovely place

I do have my health - and this has been hard won of late so extra grateful

Although my team (Spurs) lost yesterday, so did their near rivals grin

Teetime Thu 03-Mar-16 08:48:16

We, too, play the 'glad game' but we call it the life audit. When things pile up on the negative page we remind ourselves (I say 'we' but it's mainly me reminding my DF) of the things on the positive page. Some of them are:-
-we live in a free democracy
-women are equal and have rights
-we live in a prosperous country with access to law, safety net benefits if we need them and free medical care and education
-we live in the most beautiful country in the world which combines the best of nature with stunning traditional buildings and artefacts
-our coastline is outstandingly beautiful
-most people in this country are decent, kind, tolerant, have a sense of humour and look out for each other.

My personal joys are:-
-my lovely DH, DS and DD
-I live in a lovely village but have access to a variety of towns and live on the edge of one of the greatest capital cities in the world
-my house and garden are lovely and I look out onto the village green
-the wildlife is varied and beautiful
-books, books, books - and the chance to read them now I have retired
-I enjoy good health (so far)
-at the moment, while we don't live 'high' (anything but) we can manage
-I was able to retire when life as a teacher became too stressful

I am very, very grateful for my life
