Does anyone know Sandown IOW ?
We stayed at what we think was the Manor House Hotel in Sandown IoW in 1965. Can anyone remeber it and tell us where it was please

Have you googled it, GrandTea? Most hotels have a website these days.

Have a look at Luccombe Manor Country House Hotel in Shanklin. It looks as though Luccombe is a brand name for a chain of hotels, so I wonder if this used to be Manor House Hotel and was rebranded when Luccombe took it over.

Yes, but Google has let me down. I suspect it may have changed it's name or closed. I am just hoping that a GNer lived there in the 60's and my remember it.

We have tried to trace our steps from the station as best we remember and have email a couple of possibles.

Indiana, no, that is too close to the sea front, it was a bit of a walk away. But thanks for suggestion.

A lot of hotels have changed their names, closed down or been taken over by chains. Some once grand establishments now only exist thanks to being tied to travel firms (coach parties)

I am from the Isle of Wight - we left in 1971 and I don't remember a Manor House Hotel in Sandown but then in my day the whole Island boasted many lovely buildings now converted into self catering holiday lets.

GrandTea I can pop something on facebook if you like which may shed some light as to whether it still exists as a hotel.

If you're fairly confident it was in Sandown, why not go to Google Street Maps and have a wander around Sandown - you might just spot it.

GandTea Sat 04-Jun-16 22:48:21

Yes please Metlotgran. We stayed there just after we got engaged along with our friends. We decided to re-trace our steps with them next year and if the Hotel still exists, would like to stay there again.

Sorry GandT, just reread your OP - I didn't read it properly first time and thought you were unsure whether it was Sandown. What you were unsure of was the actual name of the hotel, not the resort!

GandTea Sat 04-Jun-16 22:53:39

There is a little doubt about the resort, I have Lake in mind, but was outvoted. The hotel was about 20/30 min walk from Sandown Station.

Have you tried googling " The Grange" in Sandown?

Auntieflo Sat 04-Jun-16 22:55:25

Apologies, I think it should be Shanklin

merlotgran Sat 04-Jun-16 23:08:50

Okey-doke, GrandTea I'll stick something on tomorrow morning and all will be revealed grin

This one??

There is also a Manor Hotel in Lake which is very close to Sandown so possibly the length of the walk you mentioned.

Was it a WTA holiday centre. We used to stay in The Manor House Shanklin.

merlotgran Sun 05-Jun-16 11:51:51

I've just heard that the Manor Hotel that was in Lake is now a Tesco supermarket!!

The pic is Shanklin Manor Hotel as it is now.

GandTea Sun 05-Jun-16 12:31:26

Merlotgran, just looked on Google Earth and I think you are right. Interestingly, on one GE shot it shows the Old Manor House and on another it shows the same building as Tesco. I wonder if Tesco have rooms ?

merlotgran Sun 05-Jun-16 15:58:26

Just received this from my brother who also saw my post on facebook.

'Hi sis, from France! The Manor in Lake was a top music venue. Saw the Nice, Jon Hiseman, Marsha Hunt to name but 3 xxx'

They were happy days. We nearly moved back to Ventnor a few years ago but we had the best times and sure ain't coming back. sad

GandTea Sun 05-Jun-16 16:16:24

It was 51 years ago when we were there, as I remember it certainly wasn't the place to be seen smile. How did we find hotels and book them before the internet ?

merlotgran Sun 05-Jun-16 17:01:18

My parents had a large guest house in Ventnor and most of our bookings came from newspaper ads. I used to take care of their confirmation letters etc., because I was the only one who could type! The same people came back year after year and became life-long friends. The larger and more glamorous hotels were always full but now a lot of them look very sorry for themselves or have been converted into holiday flats.

My old home is now two large flats and they've both recently been up for sale on RightMove.

Oh, to win the lottery [sigh]

We stayed there as children. It was ST A holiday centre....they became Galleon Holidays as they went up market. We used to have sports tournaments and a ramble over St Boniface Downs in a Sunday stopping at a thatched cafe. Then dances some evenings which I loved doing all the old dances, Dashing White Sergeant, Gay Gordon's. We made lots of friends with other children. We went several times to Shanklin and also to Heacham in Norfolk. Lovely holidays, we were lucky.

GandTea Sun 05-Jun-16 17:44:34

Galleon Holidays, that rings a small bell.

LullyDully Sun 05-Jun-16 17:56:05

We may have been there together.
