My son said today that he thought many women would just keep on having children if they could. Sure I wouldn't but what about you?

vampirequeen Sat 05-Nov-16 20:38:56

I would have had more children if we'd been able to afford it but I had to stop at two.

tanith Sat 05-Nov-16 20:42:04

No thanks 3 was plenty and it was a long enough job bringing them up till they could fly the nest.

kittylester Sat 05-Nov-16 20:54:52

I did! I was almost 38 when I had no 5 (my 6th pregnancy) and the gp suggested, quite strongly, that it was time to stop.

NfkDumpling Sat 05-Nov-16 21:01:23

Yes, but only one more. I would have liked four.

merlotgran Sat 05-Nov-16 21:02:14

What a strange remark for a man to make. hmm

Ana Sat 05-Nov-16 21:03:53

I was thinking that too, merlot!

Luckygirl Sat 05-Nov-16 21:04:28

I wanted 6, but stopped at 3 because my back, my piles and my varicose veins were in full protest mode!

MaizieD Sat 05-Nov-16 21:08:28

I would have liked to have had three but number 2 spent her first 4 months crying nonstop from 8pm until about 2am. I got so tired and depressed at the time that I begged my DP not to let me have another baby and he took me at my word!

(The howling baby turned into the most delightful and easy child so I didn't bear any grudge; especially as she has now presented me with a wonderful grandson!)

rosesarered Sat 05-Nov-16 21:18:01

No, my three children were enough.I really don't think that all that many women are pumpkin eaters (the US term for this.)

annodomini Sat 05-Nov-16 21:18:58

Same here, MaizieD. DS2 had bowel problems which made him crotchety, though he was really a lively and charming little boy. A big operation when he was 2 sorted him out but by that time I had gone off the idea of having a third. He and his partner have given me two lovely grandsons.

annsixty Sat 05-Nov-16 21:47:33

It took me 12 years to get 2. I would have loved a 3rd but it just didn't happen. I have always regretted it and still dream often of being pregnant even now.

thatbags Sat 05-Nov-16 21:49:00

Well, what has actually happened in richer countries and what is beginning to happen in developing countries (birth rates falling as people become better off) does not bear out what your son says, morgana. I think the evidence speaks for itself. There will be exceptions (individual ones) to the general rule, of course.

ninathenana Sat 05-Nov-16 22:23:40

We tried for 11 yrs before I had my 1st. No 2 was a complete surprise and came along when I was 37 so I definitely didn't want any more.

mumofmadboys Sat 05-Nov-16 22:31:42

I had five healthy babies and one stillborn daughter. I loved having babies and adored the toddler stage. Adolescence had its moments!!!

callgirl1 Sat 05-Nov-16 23:31:22

After 5 I decided enough was enough, and took steps. My doctor didn`t believe in birth control, he thought the more the merrier, so I rang the family planning clinic and arra nged sterilisation, but the doctor, lovely man though he was, was very disappointed in me, I think he looked forward to me coming to the surgery for the little pill that would "start" me off if I wasn`t pregnant, because he always knew it wasn`t going to work!

grannypiper Sat 05-Nov-16 23:43:58

would i heck as like, had my last one at 22 and was sterilised moths later, best thing i ever did

Shanma Sat 05-Nov-16 23:56:03

Only had one, may have had another if we could have afforded it, but never been one of the baby mad women so am happy with what I had.

grannyactivist Sun 06-Nov-16 00:24:04

I had five babies (like Kitty I had 6 pregnancies) over the course of nineteen years; the last arriving when I was 38. By then I was definitely ready to stop.

NanKate Sun 06-Nov-16 05:43:02

I had one child, very difficult birth followed by post natal depression so couldn't go through it again. When my DS was 3 I turned a corner and started to enjoy being a mum for the first time.

I now have two wonderful GSs and the pleasure I get from being a grandmother is what I wish I had felt as a mother.

The good news is that I am very close to my DS but those first few years were very bumpy.

One was enough for me and I have no regrets.

Absentdaughter is my only child. After she was born, her father stated very firmly that he didn't want any more children; he later made it clear that what he really wanted was a son. I was not willing to deceive (not taking my pill) and have more children, as much as I would have liked to have had a least one more, because it takes two parents and I am not comfortable with dishonesty and, as it turned out, huge financial issues intervened and the terrible struggle to survive would have been worse if I had had more children to cope with on my own.

History repeats in a way. He had little interest in his own daughter and spent little time and effort with her. He was mildly amused by the prospect of a possible son when I became pregnant by accident, but then miscarried. (I got little sympathy for that.) He now has pretty much no interest in or tolerance of his grandchildren and regards any activity with them as a painful chore.

Alima Sun 06-Nov-16 07:42:40

No, I wouldn't. I always thought I would like a boy and then we went on to have two daughters. It never crossed our minds to keep on trying for a son as we had decided to have two children. Once they arrived it didn't matter what sex they were.

Stansgran Sun 06-Nov-16 08:26:55

DH said one child to replace each of us was enough. I would have liked a third but I'm now glad we didn't . Absent flowers

Auntieflo Sun 06-Nov-16 08:57:50

No. We have 3 children, 2 boys 1 girl, Our first were planned, sort of, and got to the ages of 12 and 10, when we had the delightful surprise of another baby on the way. My Dr. offered me a termination, as I was an older Mum, I was 33, but declined swiftly. He was and is a delight. I was often told that we should have another, to keep him company, but it never happened.

Lona Sun 06-Nov-16 09:22:40

No. I have two children, a girl first, followed eleven months later by a boy! They are the same age for two weeks of the year. My daughter nearly died at four weeks old. She didn't sleep at night for two years.
So,the first few years were difficult and we were pretty broke too. My husband had a vasectomy.
