I was thinking about local/regional meet ups and then thought wouldn't it be fun to have a national convention! It's not going to happen I realise, but it then got me thinking as to where it couid have been held. The geographical centre of the UK wouid be logical, but on consulting Mr Google I found more than one location, Northumberland or Lancashire. Does anyone know where the exact centre is?? (I def need to get out more!)

Probably not the exact centre, but Birmingham is easily accessible by train from most places

(said she in darkest North Devon!)

We had one of these in Edinburgh a few years ago - it took a fair bit of organising and no-one ever volunteered to do another!

I'd say that in practical terms the centre of the country would be where it is easiest for most peiople to reach by public transprt, which is not necessarily the geographical centre. Time to get out the railway maps and the bus timetables?

Crossed posts, Phoenix

According to Wikipedia, the dead centre of mainland Britain is in a field in Whalley, Lancs. I wonder if we could put a marquee up there?

We could also draw up a map with a dot for every gransnetter and find out the centre of the dots. Which may also very well end up in a field in Lancashire, too.

Weren't you mapping the location of GNetters at some point Elegran?

rosesarered Fri 31-Mar-17 11:54:41

Much easier to have a virtual convention Katek we could all chip in with lunch items.cafe cupcake

Elegran Fri 31-Mar-17 12:28:59

Yes, Katek and they were all over Britain, plus one in southern Portugal and one in Oz. No-one has asked to add themselves for a long time.

Sounds like a plan but will take a lot of organising.

Elegran I'd forgotten about your map maybe you should put a new thread up explaining it as there must be new members who'd like to add themselves but don't realise it exists.

Elegran Fri 31-Mar-17 12:40:49

Tanith If anyone wants to add their marker, they can PM me and I'll tell them how.

MawBroon Fri 31-Mar-17 12:41:31

Grand Central at Birmingham New Street would appeal to me!!
B-I-G John Lewis amongst other eatery/drinkeries!!

NanaandGrampy Fri 31-Mar-17 13:23:29

What a fabulous idea !!

Anya Fri 31-Mar-17 14:19:26

If it's a choice between Birmingham or a cold and probably muddy field in Lancashire, then count me in for Brum.

BlueBelle Fri 31-Mar-17 14:25:46

I didn't know about the map surely we have European members and US don't we?

Anya Fri 31-Mar-17 14:31:29

We probably wouldn't be allowed into the US if Trump ever reads the posts on this forum. Having said that most of us use Big Words and Complex Sentences so he probably wouldn't understand us.

Having said that Paris is lovely in the Spring....???

Anya Fri 31-Mar-17 14:31:55

Having said that ...too many times!

tanith Fri 31-Mar-17 14:38:10

BlueBell they have to ask Elegran how to do it she will send instructions in answer to a private message. We do have members where you say but they haven't added themselves.

Click on Elegrans link anyone who'd like a look.

Rinouchka Fri 31-Mar-17 14:45:26

Would love to attend a GN convention. Birmingham or Paris options great( but I could help arrange Paris meetup). Probably would cost same as Birmingham.

MawBroon Fri 31-Mar-17 14:46:30

Paris just MIGHT be a bit more expensive to get to? hmm

Elegran Fri 31-Mar-17 14:46:44

Not many people did add themselves, so it isn't exactly representative. There was a flurry of interest that ran out after a couple of weeks.

mcem Fri 31-Mar-17 15:02:02

I'd forgotten about the map so used the link and, as I thought, I had added myself. Couldn't help noticing that there are very few in Scotland and I know we have more Scottish GNs than appear on it.
Would be good to see a new flurry of interest.

Galen Fri 31-Mar-17 15:04:12

I suggested a convention when I first joined, many years ago!
One of the objections was that ' people didn't want to meet each other. They preferred to be virtual!?'

tanith Fri 31-Mar-17 15:04:43

Perhaps GNHQ could add a link to the map somewhere visible?

Rigby46 Fri 31-Mar-17 15:18:36

Well given the passions running high on several threads at the moment, I think it would be more of a bloodbath than a convention. ??

Pittcity Fri 31-Mar-17 15:25:11

We would need a huge venue for us all, perhaps the field is a good idea.
