What is the first major news story that you can remember

I remember being glued to the radio when the announcement about the birth of Prince Andrew, 1960 I was 7. Fascinated by the fact a prince had been born. ( The excitement has waned over the years).

The death of King George VI. I was five and we were staying with my grandparents. I remember us all standing by the radio listening to the announcement.

The death of Queen Mary of Teck, March 1953.

I think the Coronation 1953 I must of been 5 we had a street party but I remember seeing pictures in the papers.

Just realised how old I will sound. The death of Tommy Handley of ITMA fame announced on the radio. I was 8 at the time.

The moon landing. Watching neil armstrong walk on the moon. Magical.

The birth of Prince Andrew. I was right at the time. I wasn't really interested in the news much before that.

Assassination of JFK. I was eight.

Then Aberfan. Then the moon landing.

It was Aberffan for me. Sorry if that's spelt wrong. I remember getting home from school and my nana had the tv on which was most unusual . She was very quiet and kept shaking her head. I can remember the black and white pictures and the poor men with black faces and the women hugging each other crying. Brings a shudder even now.

I remember my dad getting me out of bed (mum was at work)
He asked me what they were saying on the news,
he was profoundly deaf

Dad knew something important had happened in America and was concerned as his brother and family were there.

I was going to say Aberfan, but actually remember watching Winston Churchill's funeral with my 'aunties' (they weren't really my aunties) one of them prayed all the way through it, I can recall how sad they both were

I think it was the Munich air disaster in 1958. I was 12. Then we all got jittery about the Cuban missile crisis.

The launch of the first satellite into space. We could see it in the night sky and it seemed immensely important and impressive.
I never again felt the slightest interest in space exploration, just regret that man was leaving litter and spoiling the space beyond our world.

The Queens Coronation in 1953 my brother and I where 3 at the time and our baby sister had just been born we had a huge Street party with jelly and fruit.

I recall war being declared over Suez. And my wicked older brother said "Good".
That makes me feel very old.

The Aberfan disaster was the first major news item that I recall with any clarity. I remember my father weeping openly and I'd never seen him cry before. The distress I felt, of both events that day, is something that I'll never forget.

I distinctly remember writing 1960 in an exercise book at school when we returned after the Christmas break, somehow or other it really resonated that we were starting a new decade, and what a decade it was! I think it was around the dawn of the 1960s, aged between 5 and 6 that I was beginning to become aware of names that appeared on the news such as MacMillan, although I wasn't quite sure who he was, but I did know Eisenhower was president. I was also knew Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space. I was very aware of JFK because we were a catholic family and his assassination was another piece of news that I remember as I inadvertently broke it to my mother as she came through the door and hadn't heard, I remember how upset she was. The Profumo affair, which all the adults were talking about, somehow went over my head, being quite naive and childlike I guess, I think I mixed up Christine Keeler with a tennis player who was around at the time called Christine Truman and just couln't figure out why a woman who played tennis was getting people so hot under the collar at a later stage it all became clear

Coronation, I was 8 Suez crisis in 1956 Death of Buzby babes in ‘ 58 jfk in 1963 and the race riots in USA Martin Luther King speech in 1963 had a huge impact on me and his death I still get tears when I hear that speech
Apart from the coronation all seems to be doom and gloom

Death of George VI for me too. Then, for some reason, the Suez crisis. I think it was because my dad was a 'commercial traveller'(remember them ?) the re-issuing of petrol coupons seemed to be the main topic of conversation. I don't think they were ever used.... I may be wrong ( as usual).
