My granny used to give me tinned hamburgers ( mibbe Goblin or Westler’s?) with tinned marrowfat peas and mashed potatoes for lunch. I’ve looked for these in Sainsbury’s and Co-op, to no avail.
Has anybody seen them anywhere?

Greyduster Thu 15-Feb-18 14:33:25

I cringe at the thought that I occasionally used to give those to my children (no wonder one grew up to be a vegetarian). They both loved them at the time! Ditto Campbell’s Meatballs. I haven’t seen the hamburgers for years. There as an article on the radio this morning about the dangers of eating over processed ready meals. hmm.

MissAdventure Thu 15-Feb-18 14:44:33

I think places like poundland sell a lot of tinned stuff.

MissAdventure Thu 15-Feb-18 14:51:18

We used to have 'Ye Olde Oak' tinned ham as kids. We loved it, especially the jelly!

Auntieflo Thu 15-Feb-18 14:51:56

I used to like Spam fritters, but couldn't eat them now.

Morrisons have goblins hamburgers in gravy.

Jalima1108 Thu 15-Feb-18 14:58:59

We used to have luncheon meat for Sunday tea when we were young.
And DH and I used to like Fray Bentos pies in tins when we were first married and saving for a deposit for a house.

Scribbles Thu 15-Feb-18 15:14:37

OH and I used to have those Fray Bentos pies, too - until the time we had one with no meat at all inside it, only pastry and gravy! Never bought one since.
We sometimes had Spam fritters for lunch at primary school. They were wonderful, all crispy and served with fluffy mash and mushy peas. Yum!!

Daddima Thu 15-Feb-18 15:25:16

My wee brother ( who is an excellent cook) is a big fan of Spam. I shall have to try it.

The Fray Bentos pie is also a go-er

Christinefrance Thu 15-Feb-18 15:34:38

M&S did a tin of minced pork with apple, it was delicious, I was really disappointed when they discontinued it.
There is a lot in the news at present about the dangers of processed food, its a wonder any of us survived after our spam fritters and meatballs.

BBbevan Thu 15-Feb-18 16:06:53

My Dad told us that Campbell's Meatballs were tonsils from the local hospital. Never could go anywhere near them

MissAdventure Thu 15-Feb-18 16:25:52

grin
We used to have what my dad called 'fly biscuits'. He said all the uncooked biscuits went along on a conveyor belt, and they swept the flies off the window ledges into them.

I'm sure I've seen the tinned burgers in Morrisons, where the things like Fray Bentos tinned pies are. Will try to remember to look next week.
I used to like the Fray Bentos steamed puddings, haven't had one for many years.

Greyduster Thu 15-Feb-18 19:26:37

BBbevan ?. We used to eat - and enjoy - Fray Bentos pies. I’ve often thought about trying them again, but can’t seem to make the leap - same as I thought I might try a pot noodle, but some invisible hand always seems to stay me!

MissAdventure Thu 15-Feb-18 19:28:44

Pot noodles are quite nice blush

Chewbacca Thu 15-Feb-18 19:37:11

MissA I love chicken and mushroom Pot Noodles! When they're on offer at 50p I buy loads of them to leave in my desk at work for lunch.
Back in th 1960s, I used to have Smedleys Cheese Flaps in tomato sauce. Not seen them for years and I doubt I could bear to eat them now but, back then, I lived on them. Anyone remember them?

MissAdventure Thu 15-Feb-18 19:38:41

Chicken and mushroom is my favourite flavour, Chewbacca. smile

46yrs ago, when first married I thought I was quite 'the cook' Vesta Chow mein haha loved it!!!

Rosieroe Thu 15-Feb-18 19:43:20

Vesta curries with dehydrated meat. I can’t believe that we thought they were so tasty.

Rosieroe Thu 15-Feb-18 19:44:13

Ha ha Fairview. We were both thinking Vesta!

trisher Thu 15-Feb-18 20:01:17

Fray Bentos pies were great. Don't think I could eat one now though.
The tinned peaches with evaporated milk we got at my grans for Sunday tea.

Chewbacca Thu 15-Feb-18 20:03:37

Home Bargains sells Vesta meals... think its time I revisted that culinary delight. Curry or Chow Mein?

Christinefrance Thu 15-Feb-18 20:08:16

Definitely Chow Mein Chewbacca make sure the noodles are nice and crispy.

Jalima1108 Thu 15-Feb-18 20:19:41

Luncheon meat with salad followed by peaches and evaporated milk and a home-made cake.

I could easily eat cake now, but not the rest of it!

janeainsworth Thu 15-Feb-18 20:25:37

Greyduster I heard something about that on You &Yours this lunchtime.
The two people being interviewed were both very critical of the research methodology and the take home message was that actually processed food won’t kill you.
So you can all relax!
