During this hot weather has anyone had maggots appear in their wheelie bin for general waste?

BlueBelle Sun 29-Jul-18 18:05:53

No but I do put food waste in sealed bags so hopefully nothing gets to it

MiniMoon Sun 29-Jul-18 18:25:27

No!! Perish the thought. We subscribe to a bin cleaning service. Our bin was done on Monday last, and still smells very floral ?.

ContraryMary88 Sun 29-Jul-18 18:28:30

Not the general waste but in the small food waste bin, yuk, I scrubbed it out and disinfected it, all okay since, but we have been plagued with flies in the heat so I guess that would explain it.

Oor bins get cleaned weekly ,I'd hate to think what they'd smell like in this heat if they didn't

m careful what I wrap up- I have never had any problems and I refuse to pay extra to have the wheelie bins cleaned. I cannot do it so I am really careful.

My D has her general waste emptied every 2 weeks has had maggots once, she was horrified.
We have a dedicated food hopper which goes into green, which is garden waste and emptied every week.
Her food goes into general waste, every 2 weeks in this weather??

Not in mine, everything goes into bin bags same as when we just used to put bags out for collection.
Food goes into a separate caddy, all wrapped in newspaper. That bin is washed with disinfectant when needed.

Nanabilly Sun 29-Jul-18 21:21:26

Yes we have had a maggot bin when we went away and left our then teenage sons in charge ..They forgot to put waste bin out so it was not collected obviously and it was during a very hot spell. When we got back home my husband looked in it and it's contents were moving around so he emptied it all out , debated it and scrubbed it out with Jesus fluid

Nanabilly Sun 29-Jul-18 21:21:52

#jeyes fluid.

Chewbacca Sun 29-Jul-18 21:25:34

Nanawind your Jesus fluid mde me giggle!

OldMeg Sun 29-Jul-18 21:36:48

We have bins cleaned weekly in summer, fortnightly in winter. Never any maggots

grannyqueenie Sun 29-Jul-18 21:39:39

Jesus, didn’t he have a bit of a reputation for miracles?? grin Just perfect for that wheelie bin I’d imagine!

BlueBelle Sun 29-Jul-18 21:47:17

I too would never pay extra to have bins cleaned easy enough with a bit of discinfectsnt We no longer have a dedicated food bin so it all gets wrapped and in the rubbish bin

OldMeg Sun 29-Jul-18 21:55:47

Why not Bluebelle if you can afford it and it helps someone build a little business. I personally cannot get right down to the bottom of our big green and grey bins. To do them thoroughly would involve a big brush as well as disinfectant and then how to get them dry quickly.

Mine are steam cleaned for a couple of £s and dry almost immediately. No nasty polutimg chemicals either.

phoenix Sun 29-Jul-18 22:05:43

I had an "incident" with our wheelie bin once blush

OldMeg Sun 29-Jul-18 22:08:26

Fell in, did you phoenix? ?

Coolgran65 Sun 29-Jul-18 22:17:38

We use a big black bin liner. A new one each time the bin is emptied.

jusnoneed Sun 29-Jul-18 22:22:37

Phoenix, that short statement gave me such a laugh! ?

SpringyChicken Sun 29-Jul-18 23:10:17

I pour a bucket of hot soapy water and disinfectant into ours and slosh it around with the kitchen broom, tip the bin on its side and let it dry. The broom is cleaned at the same time. I don't like whatever the bin cleaning people spray in the bins - a sickly artificial smell.

Auntieflo Sun 29-Jul-18 23:13:08

Come on Phoenix, you can't leave us hanging like that. Pretty Please. ?

Moocow Mon 30-Jul-18 09:14:41

Never had all this extra expense and worry in the olden days wink

Pheonix?

I live in a flat so all rubbish goes into separate bins in a bin shed outside . My daughters pay a small sum to have their wheelie bins cleaned done by a lovely young guy who also does window and carpet cleaning very reasonably. He has just added the bin cleaning to his previous business so good for him. He's very hard working and does a brilliant job with everything

FlexibleFriend Mon 30-Jul-18 09:54:23

If ours gets smelly which is rare as everything is bagged before it get put in there, it's easy enough to clean out with a bucket of bleachy water and a garden hose, takes about 5 minutes. I can't imagine paying someone to do it for me but each to their own.

Pinkshoes26 Mon 30-Jul-18 10:07:01

No. I use black bin liners in the household bins and these go out into the wheelie bin when emptied. Not much food goes into our bins it is all eaten.
