Looking out through my kitchen window while washing up the dishes I could see DH tidying up the garden for winter. Beside him was the tabby cat from across the road, flying above them was a heron on it's way up the burn, in the field opposite, right at the top of the hill there was a black and white horse. It's windy in Northumberland and yellow and red leaves are blowing around.

I hadn't finished!
I was quite taken with the scene and wondered what everyone else is looking at through their kitchen window.

Bright sunshine over the back garden. A gentle ripple of wind. Summer bedders still going strong. No sign of life. The cats are having their afternoon nap.

My kitchen window has a wide sill which is where I sit to look through the window. There is also a radiator under it and it is south facing.

It is sunny but a bit blowy. The crabapple has fewer fruit than last year and the leaves are beginning to drop. The other trees are still green and gently moving in the breeze, as are the grasses. There are a few goldfinches and a variety of tits on the feeders.

My Japanese anemones, 'schizophrenias' and verbena are looking beautiful as are the geraniums in pots.

On the other hand, the glass table top could do with a thorough clean and the water feature also needs a clean as it's 'running funny'!

Looking out of the kitchen window right now, all the Roses and bushes are doubled over with the high gusts of wind here in Embleton. My Cairn Terrier is sitting on the lawn and her ears are being blown back in the wind.
Goldfinches are hanging on to bird feeder .
Sky is looking dark in the distance, and O.H. is deciding whether to cut the lawn. French Marigolds still giving us lots of colour.

Sunshine, trees blowing in the wind, a beautiful willow tree which leans over the canal behind our garden fence, our lovely, abundant carpet rose blooming for the second time this year, my washing fluttering on the line. And when I went out, I could hear ducks quacking. Not bad for a city suburb!

The wood behind our house is beginning to turn colour and when the leaves fall it looks magical in the sunshine. My garden is bathed in sun and the wonderful colours of the begonias, fuschias, Japanese anemones and michaelmas daisies are a treat to see. smile

The view from my kitchen window is the concrete sea defence on the other side of the road which has a steady stream of traffic most of the dayabove this is a clear blue sky and one or two circling seagulls. In the small front garden there are yellowy cream and deep red rose bushes swaying in the gentle breeze which are still in bloom and a few bedding plants.

Sun is shining, chickens clucking, sheep bleating. Weeds and grass growing well. Life is good here in the countryside.

Outside our kitchen window? Next door’s side wall and rusting fall pipes, their Sky dish and a mildewed meter box. Occasionally we see next door’s cat plummeting to earth from their bathroom window sill far above (it’s his party piece).

We do have a long-distance view of sheep fields, trees and dry stone walls if we look to either side though. And faraway trains tootling by.

Kitchen window looks onto our courtyard which is a grand name for a not very good architect design. It's filling steadily with leaves and I've already swept it at midday today. There are cobwebs galore and the solar ceramic pots are are no longer working . Out of the main window sunlight on an apple tree that I'didnt know I had which has fruited this year and the sad remains of a hawthorn tree which was blown over in the last wind.

DH hanging out the washing, a little bit of Dartmoor in the far distance and a bird feeder which the birds all ignore. This house has had lots of cats living here in the past and now we are here with no animals it is taking the birds a long time to trust us!

Greyduster Tue 09-Oct-18 15:09:35

Depends which way you look! On one side, the remains of our downstairs cloakroom waiting to be taken to the tip. On the other, my plum tree waving in a stiffish breeze; cosmos flowers, pot marigolds, some dahlias and erisymum Bowles Mauve having a last flowering fling, and a lovely green lawn which “has had its last cut of the year” according to DH. You’re ‘avin a larf, mate!

Looking down from my flat at the Water of Leith, with two adult swans, five large cygnets, eight ducks, and a man going for his daily walk with what I think is a komondor dog (the ones with dreadlocks). It's a very dull day and the trees are changing colour but losing their leaves very quickly in the wind.

I also have purple gladioli on the windowsill which my son brought me as they were reduced in T**co to £1.30. They took a week to come into flower but are now absolutely beautiful.

When I looked out of my kitchen window a little while ago, it was to be met with my DH cleaning said window! Behind him was our DD's elderly black Labrador lying on the grass with her head on her paws, sleeping in the sunshine.
One item on the washing line - some quirky Halloween print fabric which I've pre-washed before making a dress for my GD.
Raspberries waiting to be picked up by the garage, the beautiful vivid purple berries of the callicarpa profusion growing by the wall. White and pink roses nearer the house, dahlias, sweet peas, scabious and Californian poppies all still in bloom. Gorgeous Autumnal colours too - orange and gold leaves of the Fothergilla, and the deep red ones of the tree paeony.
Oh and a big fat wood pigeon standing majestically on top of the roof of the bird table!

DoraMarr Tue 09-Oct-18 16:23:16

wildswan I know the Water of Leith- it’s lovely! From my fifth floor window I can see the city centre, with tower blocks standing among the trees, like medieval castles in an enchanted forest. The buildings in the centre are glittering in the sun, especially the gold rotunda on the roof of the library, and the Rotunda itself. Closer, geraniums are still flowering on my balcony.

GrandmaMoira Tue 09-Oct-18 16:38:09

My kitchen window view is only a fence about a yard away. Where I am sitting now at the back of the house I can see the trees in the gardens behind with the houses behind them and a lovely blue sky. It's very green (and quiet) for a London house.

nanaK54 Tue 09-Oct-18 16:52:48

Currently DH cutting grass on his tractor mower - good man - he finished work early to do this

shysal Tue 09-Oct-18 17:20:36

My kitchen window overlooks the road and houses opposite so not a great view, but I like to see a bit of life and children playing. To the rear is my steep garden, which I have to say is still a riot of colour. Beyond is farmland, the cattle not yet taken indoors. They are eating the dead leaves from a fallen branch, which they enjoy as if they were Pringles. I love the bull whom I call Red. He leans against the double fence and flutters his eyelashes at me. He is very gentle with his girls but has wonderful powerful, muscular buttocks!
The sky is still cloudless, it has been a hot day.

callgirl1 Tue 09-Oct-18 17:33:06

The 8 foot wall across the side passage, above that the top parts some of the houses on the estate over the wall. Further along, over the wall there`s a tree that sports bright orangey red berries every summer, and which I curse on a windy day, because the berries end up scattered across my back yard. Outside the front window is the road and on the opposite side the canal bank, usually covered in parked cars. When we moved here, 33 years ago, the bank was green and grassy, hardly a car in sight.

ginny Tue 09-Oct-18 17:42:33

Right now I can see in front of me a hill covered in trees. To the left a couple of blue tits feeding from the fat balls I put out a short while ago. To the right a glimpse of the sea . Not my kitchen but the one that is mine for just this week.

aggie Tue 09-Oct-18 18:07:44

Pink Cosmos with pale yellow sunflowers peeping though , these are against a very old brick wall , in front is the drive and nearest me is my raised bed , still filled with red nemesia , pale yellow nasturtiums and red geraniums , boxes of violas are on the patio table , they are to be planted where we pull out the cosmos . I am in the middle of a painting of the cosmos and sunflowers

MiniMoon Tue 09-Oct-18 18:58:53

This is my view, minus the horse which was right at the top of the hill, beside the stone wall. There are usually sheep in that field.

MiniMoon Tue 09-Oct-18 19:00:43

By the way, the camera lengthens the view. It's closer than the photo shows.
