I never know whether I should tip or not. Do you tip your Ocado driver (or would you at Christmas) and how much? confused

Thanks in advance! smile

Ailsa43 Mon 17-Dec-18 14:14:29

No! They're told they shouldn't accept tips!!

Riverwalk Mon 17-Dec-18 14:14:58

No, I don't tip the Ocado driver. They are full-time employees with good benefits and not of the gig economy.

I tip almost everyone else!

MawBroon Mon 17-Dec-18 14:19:33

No

Squiffy Mon 17-Dec-18 14:19:35

My understanding is that no delivery drivers are supposed to/allowed to accept tips. Having said that, I have tipped in the past and it was never refused!

FlexibleFriend Mon 17-Dec-18 14:20:24

No I don't tip, some are full time drivers others are part time and if their pay scale is anything like Tesco's the pay isn't great. I wouldn't do it for the money they earn all that lugging shopping about. Great if the deliveries are all to houses not so great if on the third floor with no lift.

Only if it was the same driver who delivers to you every week then I’d be tempted to give them a tip.

Teetime Mon 17-Dec-18 14:35:03

NO I dont tip - we get a different driver every week

Grandma70s Mon 17-Dec-18 14:48:39

I don’t tip. As others have said, different drivers every week.

Charleygirl5 Mon 17-Dec-18 14:52:59

I have never seen the same fellow twice but each is delighted to see that it is a few paces to my front door with no steps to hinder them.

I would not dream of tipping them.

That decides it then! smile No tip for the driver today - I only get Ocado about once every six weeks, I tend to buy for the day, I have a Waitrose, a Tesco and a great Co-op all within a 5 minute walk of my house. The Waitrose staff greet me like an old friend! (it's the closest so I am there often.

We should have a thread category entitled "Ask the oracle" for questions like this one smile

Good Lord no! I didn’t know people still did tipping, except for an expensive meal out.

sodapop Tue 18-Dec-18 19:02:04

No - unless the driver goes over and above to help you.

Deedaa Tue 18-Dec-18 20:43:12

DS is a delivery driver for Tesco and has never mentioned getting tips.

It's not true that the drivers aren't allowed to accept tips. We don't expect them but when you've just lugged 11 boxes of water up 4 flights of stairs with nightmare parking, a bottle of water never goes a miss.

I don't have many occasions to tip, but whoever they are they earn more than me! I live in a small town where I know everybody and wouldn't tip friends.
However shops where I've had good and friendly service during the year get a big box of chocs and a thank you card at Christmas.
I wonder if a 'Christmas box' is now a thing of the past?

Urmstongran Tue 29-Oct-19 09:14:53

I never did & they were always lovely & helpful. Best ever service.

dragonfly46 Tue 29-Oct-19 09:19:27

No I don't and I agree they are by far the best and have the best products especially their organic eggs!!

henetha Tue 29-Oct-19 10:09:25

I've often wondered about this and if I should tip the Tesco delivery person But it is never the same one twice, so I don't.
But sometimes they look a bit expectant, I think?

cornergran Tue 29-Oct-19 10:17:06

It’s never occurred to me to tip anyone who delivers whether its food or furniture. Having said that the access is flat and we help if we can. I might think differently if flights of stairs were involved.

ladymuck Tue 29-Oct-19 10:17:29

No. He gets his wages, let that suffice. If he is new, you will be asked to give a review of his service. I have regular deliveries and the drivers are not all the same. It just depends on their personalities, not because they are hoping for a tip.

Alexa Tue 29-Oct-19 10:20:22

I offered a tip to a friendly helpful Tesco man and he refused it explaining he was paid to do his job and did not expect tips.

SparklyGrandma Tue 29-Oct-19 10:24:32

I have often wondered this, whether to tip, as I rely on grocery deliveries.

Thank you everyone for answering this.

Oh dear. We have an occasional pick up and delivery of ironing. The young polish man who does this is a great chap and is unexpectedly hilarious. I usually give him some of the DGS's outgrown toys or books (if they're in good enough condition) for his 2 little girls. Occasionally, I might put in a bag of sweets or biscuits.
He works very hard doing deliveries for all sorts of companies too. He brought me some chocs for my Christmas last year. I suppose its something about building relationships. If it was a different person each time it would be different.
That said, I did tip two delivery men who struggled up in our lift with a heavy double mattress and took away the old ones on a public holiday to suit me. They were Polish too. Cheerful and polite. I appreciated their work so was happy to give them something towards a drink after their shift.

Kerenhappuch Tue 29-Oct-19 10:30:35

I tipped the Ocado driver who brought my Christmas delivery and told him to have a drink on me. I hope he didn't have to hand it over to Ocado!

Normally I don't tip the Ocado drivers.
