Sightings of UFO's in North Devon!

Hello all, and sending usual good wishes.

Well, there are at least six of them, and I think I will have to tackle them alone.

They have been there for quite a while, and although not posing any threat, I think it is time for them to go.

Yes, I am calling time on Unidentifed Frozen Objects!

In fairness, not all are completely "unidentified" the odd one does appear to be labelled, although I could call into question Mr P's spelling of "coq au vin" confusedblush

We have reached the stage where even the ones that are labelled are not to be trusted! I defrosted a tub labelled "mashed swede & potato", thinking it would be useful to help to top a shepherd's pie, only to find that it contained bami goreng!

We both (me especially) hate wasting food, and I confess to saving quantities of left overs, sometimes just in the fridge, only to throw them away a few days later. Yes, I know I'm only prolonging the inevitable, but somehow it feels slightly better than consigning it to the waste food caddy on the day!

Anyone else guilty, or is it just me?

Baggs Sat 02-Feb-19 17:40:08

Surely, if it's going into the so-called 'waste' food caddy, all of which should be composted, it's not waste.

Baggs Sat 02-Feb-19 17:41:18

Isn't that the point of food caddy collections by local authorities—to reduce waste by making it into something useful?

HildaW Sat 02-Feb-19 17:43:12

Aha! Am with you - I shall be going down this route soon as we are to move and the freezer must be emptied. I've managed to clear those odd cups right at the back of the fridge that contained (probably) some custard, remains of a tin of tomatoes and that really good beef dripping from the last big Sunday roast - from 6 months ago! Hey ho!

HildaW Sat 02-Feb-19 17:44:16

Food waste caddies are for the non compostable stuff....i.e. meaty stuff or cold pasta.

Nonnie Sat 02-Feb-19 17:44:57

I just persuaded DH to sort out the freezer and put all the older stuff on one shelf and the unnecessary things he had just bought on a separate shelf and not to buy any more. Himself doing all the shopping and cooking is a mixed blessing!

phoenix Sat 02-Feb-19 17:48:45

I take your point Baggs, but while it is still edible, throwing it out still somehow feels wasteful.

Baggs Sat 02-Feb-19 17:51:18

"Feels", yes.

But isn't.

That feels good too ?

Baggs Sat 02-Feb-19 17:54:40

Meaty stuff and cold pasta is compostable, hildaw. That is why it's worth collecting. We're not talking about garden composting methods with this stuff, although for several years we did have a Green Cone garden composter into which we put bones and 'meaty stuff'. Because of its construction and the way it utilised sunshine to generate heat, it did break down the bones and meaty stuff. Local authorities will have much bigger models of this system, probably with other energy sources too.

I was getting really excited when I read the OP title and was going to persuade DH to jump in the car so we could come down with a telescope!

hmm

We've just disposed of a few UFOs as we had a freezer problem and now everything is neat and tidy and within a reasonable date. Labelled with one of those non-smudge pens.

UFOs are also Un Finished Objects (ie craft half done, knitting not sewn up, curtains need lining etc).

Jalima1108 Sat 02-Feb-19 18:18:45

ps we did eat some of them after they were thawed and identified!

HildaW Sat 02-Feb-19 18:53:03

.....well I mean its not compostable in yer average garden compost bin.....unless you want the rats about!

phoenix Sat 02-Feb-19 19:56:22

Jalima, apologies for disappointing you!

annsixty Sat 02-Feb-19 20:32:09

?????

Jalima1108 Sat 02-Feb-19 20:35:48

That's all right phoenix - I have plenty of UFOs lingering around in this house
(unfinished objects)

Nonnie Sun 03-Feb-19 10:29:36

Talking of unfinished objects I'm still 'finishing' DH. Long way to go (bet he would say the same about me) grin

Did anyone else get snowbound and miss their flight this week? We are supposed to be in the Caribbean and now instead we are all downhearted and snowbound . One very disappointed family .

GOOSNARGH (n.)

Something left over from preparing or eating a meal, which you store in
the fridge despite the fact that you know full well you will never ever use
it.
From ‘the meaning of Liff’ by Douglas Adams.
This book changed my life ???

HurdyGurdy Sun 03-Feb-19 10:58:21

My husband is very guilty of not labelling food he puts into the freezer. Or he will label it in his best handwriting, which mean that neither of us can decipher it.

We have had some "interesting" meal combinations as a result

4allweknow Sun 03-Feb-19 10:58:34

Did have the same problem until I could not decipher what was what a d needed the space for "just in case" items. Felt really good when cleared out. Some of the stuff went to the dog next door so not totally wasted. Now I have to tackle the mountain of herbs I have stored from the garden. But, that's a other day.

Goosnargh is a village not far from Preston, Lancashire!
If you like duck, try a Goosnargh duck, there won't be any left lurking, they're delicious! smile

I usually freeze soups/stews or chicken striped off a carcass. I put meat bones, bread if its mouldy & no good for birds into my waste food caddy, all peelings & leaves etc off veg go into green waste bin (specific instructions from local Council). Get the occasional surprise from freezer but not oftengrin

As for UFO's around the house or stored in boxes out of sight hmm

Juggernaut Sun 03-Feb-19 11:08:46

All our little parcels of frozen food are clearly labelled, I use a 'Sharpie' marker pen, which if on a tub, can be wiped off for re-use.
I make myself sound organised, but you haven't seen my collection of elastic bands, padded envelopes and plastic 'twisty ties!blush

Oldwoman70 Sun 03-Feb-19 11:09:05

I always label and date everything before it goes into the freezer, the other day I came across an unlabeled plastic box. It is either soup or possibly pasta sauce. The mystery is the other containers of soup and pasta sauce are clearly labeled so what happened with this one?

Yes, that's the name! I couldn't find it and couldn't remember the name.
Sticky labels tend to fall off in the freezer.

dalby hope you are there by now!
