Do you think your mother would have appreciated GN

Just that really, I'm sure if my mum had been on line this may have been a site that appealed to her. What about yours? and if you think she would have subscribed to this site what threads would have drawn her in?

baubles Mon 04-Mar-19 15:50:49

Nope, my mother would never have interacted with strangers.

TerriBull Mon 04-Mar-19 15:55:35

Possibly generational, we all think nothing of it grin and the generations behind us well they are different again in the sometimes indiscreet ways they can conduct themselves on line. I suppose we are all of our time. I think my mother might have rather enjoyed such a forum.

No definitely not. My mother was an old fashioned very private person and would have been horrified by all the personal revelations. My mother was born in 1896 so it's hard to comprehend how modern life would seem to her.

My Mother would have loved GN, she was extremely sociable and enjoyed people and a good old natter. She was texting up till a couple of days before she died, she had embraced technology, had a kindle and sent emails on it.

Teetime Mon 04-Mar-19 16:14:23

My mother could barely speak to the neighbours let alone anyone else.

Charleygirl5 Mon 04-Mar-19 16:16:44

Absolutely not. She would have thought correctly that we were wasting a lot of time and giving out too much personal information. She was a very private person.

I think my mum would probably have enjoyed a chat! She would have been 97 later this month but alas died in 1984 aged 61. She was open to change, challenged inequality, felt strongly about family ..yup she would have joined!

Dare not tell my Aunt (94) she would be on here causing havoc on the political threads! She skypes/facetimes & uses FB.

Interesting thought, yes, I think that had she mastered on-line, she probably would have enjoyed Gransnet

Urmstongran Mon 04-Mar-19 16:30:47

That made me giggle Teetime!

Marydoll Mon 04-Mar-19 16:31:07

My mother would think it was a lot of nonsense! Sharing your thoughts with strangers, she would have been horrified!
In fact if she was still alive, she would have "banned" me from going to the meetups in case I was kidnapped . grin!

Scribbles Mon 04-Mar-19 16:35:15

I don't think my mother would have enjoyed it. She was a sociable person in real life but quite shy; always took her time getting to know people and forming friendships. I suspect the upfront and straight-talking nature of much of GN would have put her off. And, as for the notion of meet-ups - going off for coffee or lunch with a person or people you've never actually been introduced to?! Never shock!!

My dad, on the other hand .... He would have loved the casual sociability of it all.

Fennel Mon 04-Mar-19 16:36:40

My Mum would have loved it, she loved chatting to people of all ages.
In her last years she wouldn't have been able to use a computer and type, as she'd had a stroke. Though she had trained as a secretary.

KatyK Mon 04-Mar-19 16:42:31

Mine wouldn't.

Oldandverygrey Mon 04-Mar-19 16:43:42

My mother would have been a definite no as well. The thought of revealing any personal details online would have filled her with horror!

NanKate Mon 04-Mar-19 16:45:20

My dear mum would have said 'Don't wash your dirty washing in public'. However I think she would have peeked at some of the threads and said to me 'do you know what those women are up to' ? (Horrified, but fascinated facial expression).

Kidnapped Marydoll ! What would your mum have said about your tights around your knees in the High Street and your little sojourn into the men's loo. She might have had a touch of the vapours.

kittylester Mon 04-Mar-19 16:47:42

Can beat that Teetime! My mother would hardly speak to me! Well, she actually didn't for 6 years!

My Mum would want to know that you were all wearing twinset and pearls before she would speak to you.

My DM would have enjoyed sharing her opinions, as long as everyone agreed with them! I bought her a mug which said, "Everyone is entitled to my opinion!" on it!

Purpledaffodil Mon 04-Mar-19 16:56:25

NanKate, my mother would have said exactly the same so I don’t wash it in public. Now in RL that’s another matter. ?

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Mar-19 16:57:18

No, I don't think my DM would.
She would probably consider it a frivolous waste of valuable time!

annodomini Mon 04-Mar-19 17:27:17

I don't think my mum would have understood the raison d'etre for Gransnet. She got all the interaction she wanted from her friends and the WI. If she had been on here, I'd have been quite embarrassed to express my opinions!

M0nica Mon 04-Mar-19 17:34:03

This topic really got me thinking. My mother was very social and sociable and had lots of friends, I can imagine her, if she got the hang of a smart phone busily texting her friends, but I do not think she would have ever have been on Facebook or anything like that (I am not on Facebook, or any social media where I am indentifiable) and I cannot see her on Gransnet. Apart from anything else, she had such a busy social life she wouldn't have time and although she was an intelligent and clever woman, she wasn't a curious woman and not interested in discussing things.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Mon 04-Mar-19 17:34:46

I think my mum would have liked it if she'd had the time. She could have sounded off about any problems and could have asked for advice, all perfectly anonymously.

TerriBull Mon 04-Mar-19 17:46:27

I don't think my mother would have revealed anything too personal about herself, she was, like others have said about their mothers a private person, although I think she may have enjoyed dipping her toe into some of the forums, but I couldn't get her to go online, a mobile phone was her limit.

"she would have considered it a frivolous waste of time" I got that response from an aunt, or words to that effect, when I was trying to pick her brains regarding family history. Whilst she was busy complaining how I was clearly wasting my time spending all day (her interpretation) on a computer on the futile task of genealogy, she nevertheless unconsciously interjected with all manner of snippets that I didn't know, so I just let her moan on grin then she said "you father would have known all this" to which I replied "that's I'm asking you, cos he's dead"hmm

NanKate Mon 04-Mar-19 17:48:15

Yes Purpledaffodil our mothers would have been brought up to hide anything unsavoury from the general public and especially the neighbours.
