Another scammer

Good for you, tiggy! We had a nuisance call, supposedly from BT, at a quarter to eight this morning. It was frightening as we immediately supposed it was a family member with a problem. Grr.

We are getting this call at least once a week and when they say they are from BT we say " no you are not you are a criminal ", we ban most numbers but they generate a new number each time they ring.

I've been absolutely plagued by this particular scam. Nothing I do seems to prevent them. So I leave the answerphone on a lot. On the odd occasion when they do catch me I just shout something rude and put the phone down. (the severity of the rudeness depends on my mood that day!)

I just say ‘you do realise cold calling is illegal so I’m going to end this call now’.

I had a similar call a few days ago. What she actually said was "This is XXXX from Internet Provider . . . " She didn't mention which internet provider, so if I hadn't been naturally suspicious, I could have mentally inserted whatever my internet provider was, and assumed it was genuine. She also told me to press one to speak to an engineer (about my connection, which "has been compromised by multiple international sources" )

I listened to it all carefully, then put the phone down. I am afraid the engineer will be getting tired waiting for me to press one.

Not sure if it would work on current systems but my friend used to ask them to hold on for a minute. She then just walked off and left them for ages as their line was then blocked.

I don't have answerphone or 1571 on my landline any more and I now get almost no scam calls.
My theory was that if it goes to answerphone (or 1571) the scammers' system logs that as being answered and therefore a 'live' line worth contacting again.
Of course, that's not handy if you often need to get answerphone messages but luckily I don't.

I don’t have the ansaphone facility on our landline either FarNorth for the same reason. People who know me have my mobile number if I’m out!

We have quite a few of these. The last time I went into 'dotty old woman' mode - panic, my computer's upstairs 'oh dear, oh dear, it takes me such a long time to get up there theses days, just wait a while, now I have to switch it on, it takes such a time.... Oh you can stretch it out for ages if you have the time. I might try 'we're on dial-up' next time!
I had the same fun with someone who phoned up about 'your recent car accident'?! 'Which one' I asked. 'There have been several.' I then got passed onto a supervisor who asked for details. 'Well,' I said, 'I suppose the worst one was when I drove off the edge of a cliff. I just panicked and it all got out of control. There was a terrible mess...' But the phone was dead and he'd gone!

I just had one from 'Open Reach' informing me my internet is slow and the connection needs looking at. I politely asked why Open Reach would be ringing my home phone on a mobile number? Her reply "Who the fuck are you to ask me that? I'm here to sort out your internet not answer your fucking questions. I should put down the phone on your fucking questions"
I would loved to have carried on our delightful conversation but her use of the same expletive was becoming boring. I mean the English language has a wide number of expletives, to use just one is pure laziness.

An electronic voice called Shirley keeps informing me that my internet is compromised. I block her every time but she keeps calling from different numbers. Grrrrr

It was "Shirley" who called me, Jane, or rather, a recording of her.

We have a phone which asks calls from unrecognised numbers to say who they are. Our scam calls are now practically zero as they won’t give their name and hang up!

We tell them:-
we can’t deal with any problem at the moment as our computer is being used to mine Bit Coin.
Or
Oh right, you will be needing my credit card number its 75647384957362527385859382725364758585.
Or
Put them on hold and shout a reply to them from a distance each time they speak.
Or
Oh thats interesting, I work for Microsoft/BT/Fraud Department
Or
I must just advise you that all my calls are recorded by the Police.
Or
Pretending to be a little confuddled and ask them to send someone straight round to repair it.
Or
I haven’t got a computer!
They usually hang up on us, so rude lol.
If you have the time and patience you can have a bit of fun, but it can sometimes turn nasty! My worse one was being told I probably needed a .............! I hung up on that one!

I'm sick of the one to my mobile which says hello my name is * (different one each time but same voice) I understand you've recently been involved in an accident which wasn't your fault - is that correct? Silence - if you say anything it clicks through to a real person. I block the number each time but they just move to another one

I have to say that since I moved house a year ago and went ex-directory the call I started this thread with is the first I have had. It does make me wonder who has been selling on my name and number.
Previously when I used to get alot of these calls I went into stupid old woman mode as descibed by Badenkate. My record for wasting their time was 7 minutes.Perhaps we should start a competition to see who can keep the **** going for the longest time !
