AIBU? Well , yes I probably am.
It drives me mad when I read or hear on the TV/ radio or in the newspaper comments such as. ‘The whole world is waiting with bated breath for the birth of......
The book we have all been waiting to read.
Etc. etc.
Well actually most of us haven’t !

YRNBU x 100000000000000

Luckygirl Sun 05-May-19 13:44:59

Indeed so. And I get really annoyed when a headline is e.g. "England is playing......" No, no England, the English football team.

I really dislike the phrase " must have" as used in "this season's must have handbag/dress/colour is..."

It makes me determined not to have it!

Callistemon Sun 05-May-19 14:05:06

I forgot about it until you mentioned it ginny
I shall think of nothing else all day now
grin
No, YANBU

LadyGracie Sun 05-May-19 15:27:48

YANBU I’m not waiting with baited breath I’m fed up hearing about it.

I’ve even stopped watching, listening or reading the news. I’m trying to calmly go with the flow wine

EllanVannin Sun 05-May-19 18:11:08

I'm another who can't stand the " must have " brigade, phoenix. To me it shouts greed besides it being insensitive to those who " can't have " and never having a hope in Hell's chance of ever " having ".

ninathenana Sun 05-May-19 18:16:18

I'm another one who is sick of the whole saga. As for some of the crap that US sites on FB come out with on this subject, well don't get me started...
zzzzzzz

Callistemon Sun 05-May-19 19:22:14

my breath is still bated …..

Callistemon Sun 05-May-19 19:22:46

actually, that is because I am waiting for Line of Duty
wink

Yes, the 'we all' statement drives me nuts as well'

Also the vast sweeping statements about the recent past. The sweeping statements that before about 1980, all married women stayed at home and didn't work, that all girls conformed to gender stereotypes and never challenged them, that all men acted as masters in their own home and ruled them with a rod of iron, that women never had bank accounts and had to ask their husbands for every penny and justify every item of clothing they needed.

Some, yes, all, NO

BradfordLass72 Mon 06-May-19 03:53:49

I suppose generalisations are just figures of speech and not to be taken literally.

I'm not waiting for anything.
Nor am I allied to any fashion ('we were all wearing......in the 70's') or songs ('we all listened to.....') Neither do I watch ('we all know what happened to ......on Coro').

Because we don't all.......

But it doesn't annoy me because it's simply not true..

M0nica Mon 06-May-19 08:11:20

Yes but.... It is just as easy to say 'Most of us' 'Many people'.

I think what I dislike most is the assumption of uniformity and by definition the denial that people could think other.

BradfordLass72 Mon 06-May-19 09:02:19

Isn't coincidence amazing?

I logged off here and went to listen to music, something I rarely do. 'From the Lambing to the Wool' is a favourite because I used to sing it in the folk clubs.
But up popped another Judy Small song, 'You Don't Speak For Me.' More or less voicing the same frustrations spoken about here.

It's just one of many coincidences recently. I may start a thread.... grin.

Floradora9 Mon 06-May-19 17:50:45

I hate the saying " the whole town is coming to terms with " something. How do they know , have they asked everybody ?

Witzend Mon 06-May-19 21:38:30

Worst ever to me was one of those vacuous journalists who write drivel in the Sunday papers, saying, 'Let's face it, we're all obsessed with celebrities.'

No, dear, we're not. Some of couldn't give a flying f***.
(OK, I will admit that I shouldn't have been reading her vacuous drivel in the first place.)

"To die for" always makes me grind my teeth when used to describe everyday things - food, a dress, lipstick etc, etc.

absent Mon 06-May-19 23:15:58

Luckygirl What is usually said is "England ARE playing…" which is even more irritating.

Littleannie Mon 06-May-19 23:37:02

There was a letter in the paper recently from a woman who said 'all women love David Beckham because....'. No dear, I don't.

crazyH Mon 06-May-19 23:40:02

I don't either ...like David Beckham

Lyndiloo Tue 07-May-19 00:07:11

My biggest pet hate at the moment is hearing people on the radio or wherever, when being interviewed, begin a sentence with, 'So'. I could scream! (And often do!) i.e. 'What do you like for breakfast?' 'So, I like cornflakes', etc. 'So' means therefore or very or the case being such. (Politicians use this a lot. Is that little word giving them time to think of an answer ...?) Grrrr!
