....we need to decide how we are going to show quoted (from other posters) remarks. Is it to be like this, or, like this. Because it gets very confusing. Especially when there are several quoted bits in one post.

I myself am in favour of good old quotation marks. "Like this"

I do it like this but I do posters' names like this. grin

I agree and I do try to do that gonegirl but it’s easy to get caught out.
I quoted something this morning on the BBC Licence thread & forgot to preview.
I’d used the ^ things to italicise it but had also forgotten that they don’t work if what you are quoting has been split up into paragraphs.
Sorry ?

Gonegirl Wed 12-Jun-19 09:56:19

Yes. So do I.

Sometimes I do it "like this", but no one notices it.

Sigh.

I put posters' names in bold and quotes in "quotation marks". Occasionally also use bold to emphasise a point rather than shouty capitals.

Nothing to apologise for!!! grin

Gonegirl Wed 12-Jun-19 09:59:36

Perhaps we should do it "like this"

Gonegirl Wed 12-Jun-19 10:00:22

Bit fiddly though.

like this Gonegirl

If I quote something which someone else who is not on GN said, I try to use " "

It doesn't always work though as sometimes spaces appear where they shouldn't
eg ^ like this ^

Gonegirl Wed 12-Jun-19 10:14:02

Yes. You have to be careful to keep it all squidged up.

(I thought for a moment they'd taken my roastchicken away!

If I'm quoting another poster, I always italicise like this (Don't most people on here do this ? - I kind of thought it was 'the rule' ?☺️), but yes, you do have to be careful if the quote includes paragraphs or unnoticed spaces. Which is why I always preview if I'm using any sort of text formatting.

If I'm quoting something from somewhere else, though, I'm inclined to use "speech marks" or even "italicise and use speech marks"

I agree with you Gonegirl. Italics always stand out, but quotation marks are not so noticeable on their own.
