Wandering around the supermarket this morning I stopped next to a young mother with a small child in the trolley seat. The child waved and said what I think was hello. I waved and said hello back. The child then started a totally incomprehensible conversation with me! I nodded and made what I hoped were suitable noises back until the mother smiled and moved on, at which point the child waved and said bye (I think!).
A woman standing next to me said that she didn't see how I could do that and that she hated it when small children tried to speak to her! I walked away thinking I would rather have an incomprehensible conversation with a child than any sort of conversation with her!
