Is this just an annoying throwaway phrase or is it so ingrained in our minds that we really do think life owes us a living?

I'm of the rare breed that doesn't think I'm owed anything.
What exactly and by whom ??

I'm entitled to change my mind. To privacy in my own home. To my opinions. Etc. We're all entitled to these at least I'd have thought?

I'm entitled to my pension (I think), having paid in for it all those years.
Yes, I know it is paid out of current taxes, but I paid my stamp!

And what Jane10 has said too.

However, I have never thought that the world owes me a living.

live MY life how I want ,without "friends" telling me I should give up caring for my family or have a holiday abroad or not do too much at my age ...for goodness sake I know what I want and what I'm capable of and if I want to move furniture or train for a marathon that's my choice

Namsnanny I am wondering if this is about the 'entitled generation', those who think everything they don't have is someone (their) else's fault. We've all seen them, those who think they should have two seats on public transport, those who walk towards us chatting or on their phones and think we should move out of the way................................... If not, sorry, I agree with what others have said!

'I deserve ...' is similar.
I've lost track of the number of times that I've heard this expression used to justify some expenditure that in reality the speaker can't afford, as in, "I work really hard so I deserve the holiday that I have just booked (even though I am already behind with payments for rent, energy, Netflixs etc.)!
