Spaces after full stops. Anyone as old as me?

I taught myself to type from a Pitman’s book about 1967 and learnt to put 3 spaces after full stop and 2 after semi-colon, like you, Lovetopaint. I still prefer to put 2 or 3 spaces after full stop, though I know it’s out of fashion.

I was taught to use two spaces after a flipping stop. No mention of Colons.

And, double spacing for paragraphs.

Whether two or three spaces, it is not so much out of fashion as no longer necessary unless you are using a typewriter rather than a computer. Perhaps Jacob Rees-Mogg will be reinstating typewriters in his office.

I was taught the same way in my secretarial course. I still do two spaces after a full stop, couldn’t do anything different now! I thought everyone did!

The two or three spaces is definitely a typing/secretarial thing. In the print, only one space is used. It's hard to change habits and I can't see that it matters for viewing on a screen.

I once spent half a lesson trying to work out a shorthand phrase. Turned out to be a dash! I must have been absent for the vital lesson.

Miss Horner was very strict. Even made us do a lesson on our last day of school.

Did secretarial training in 1969 - but not in the UK. Was never taught double spacing after full stop. None of my bosses or colleagues ever pointed it out to me either.

2 spaces after fullstop. I try to do it when texting.

I learned to type in the 80s. Two spaces following a full stop then !

Double space after paragraphs causes havoc in messenger though.

I've never heard of the 3/2 rule but certainly knew about two spaces after a full stop.

When companies tried to change it I was told that companies were trying to get reduce it down to one as a result of one company - I seem to have either BT or British Gas in my mind - wanting typists to increase their output. Mind you that could be a complete urban myth. I do think it helps people read more easily with two.

Lovetopaint, the same for me...3 and 2. Also we had to indent the first line of a new paragraph.

Have never done a shorthand and typing course so consequently not heard of the three spaces thingy. Have always thought it is not done to start a sentence with “and” though. Is that ok now then? Along with “but” and “so”.

Learned my shorthand and typing in the mid sixties. Two spaces after a full stop, everything else one space.
Double spacing between paras.
Indent 5 spaces at new para.

Still use my shorthand when making notes on a telephone call. Also, if I'm doing a handwritten letter on good paper I do a rough draft first in shorthand.

Same for me Coolgran65 - shorthand so useful out of the office especially for passwords for different accounts etc.

*alima "and", "so" and "but" are conjunctions (ie joining words), so you shouldn't start a sentence with one. I think. .
