Just seen that Monzo have stored customer details on insecure servers and are urging people to check accounts and change pins/ passwords.
Sticking this on Chat thread in case people miss it on money one.

What is Monzo?

I've just Googled, as I'd never heard of it either.
It 's a bank.

It’s an online bank. A lot of people use it as you download the app on your phone and it can track all your budget spending in different areas. I only know it because my DD uses it.

Blimey, who'd trust a bank called Monzo ??? grin

There are many online banks now ...my AC use them too and so far, so good.

Monzo ? Smacks of Bonko products. If you put a banking app on your mobile you might as well invite people to rob you.

... but my Barclays account was cleaned out, by someone in Brazil!

Grannyknot Wed 07-Aug-19 08:57:35

Meant to add ... and I don't use apps for banking.

That’s awful Grannyknot ! How horrid for you!
It worries me to death my kids all use banking apps on their mobiles. I just don’t think it’s safe. Everything online is hacked it seems. And yet more and more stuff you have to use is now online. It all seems mad to me. Bring back shops with real people, goods you can look at before buying them and let everyone get paid weekly in cash in a brown envelope !
Those were the days !

I use online banking but I am able to access an actual branch and would never download a banking app to my phone - I don't think they are secure enough. I have never heard of Monzo either.

Merseybelle (I've only just got back to this thread) - yes, awful, the Brazil experience, my card apparently was cloned, easily done, I was told, just a quick swipe on a cloning device and then the info is sent to accomplices anywhere in the world. The bank was great though and reimbursed all the missing money. But I had a mini-heart attack when their Fraud Department called me.

I think most banks will refund - sometimes it takes a while.

DH and I both use the online banking app and hopefully it will be OK. Our credit card and current account via DH's debit card have all been emptied long before we had our apps - I've still no idea how they did it and fortunately our money was refunded almost instantly.

DH used Monzo when we were abroad recently - he loaded the card with cash so we could track our spending and it seemed to be absolutely fine, but I'll let him know to check it.

Same as GrannyKnot
Our Bank account emptied about three years ago over Easter holidays by someone in Jakarta angry

HSBC put me through to the fraud department and placed emergency funds in new account.

Last use of card was at a petrol service station. (Not local)

I use telephone banking not internet banking.

Cherrytree59 Fri 09-Aug-19 17:28:08

Ps. We were fully reimbursed by the bank.
