Texting taboo?

Social media is awash with the latest fad...contacting your text door neighbour...yes, you read that correctly.
It was all the rage years ago and has recently resurfaced.
People have been sending texts introducing themselves to the phone number the same as their own with just the last number altered to one less or one more eg: a text from your number (hypothetically 07787 998231) would be sent to 07787 998230 or 998232.
Have any GNs received one of these unexpected 'calling cards'?
Some of the responses are, IMO, quite funny including the one I screenshot.
Definitely not for those who've had their humour lobotomised. grin

Clearly I have been lobotomised then. Isn't this more or less the same as getting annoying cold calls from xyz who are going to cut of your internet etc.

shockshock (yawn) the “ latest fad ” ? Really?
What happened - did the paint dry before they finished watching it?

GabriellaG54 Tue 06-Aug-19 17:58:23

No. Not the same thing at all.
Supposed to be friendly calls, not selling merchandise or anything else nor scams.
You obviously don't know the person you ring and I think the point is to introduce yourself, say 'hi/hello' and possibly start a conversation.
The fact that it's random makes it popular.
One man contacted his text door neighbour and the person who answered asked who he was. The texter text his name and asked who the other man was.
The second man said he was Barack Obama...but here's the texts they sent.
I actually think it's really funny.

My post @17.58 was to wildswan16

Watching paint dry too exciting for you?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 06-Aug-19 18:46:45

Well I would be stumped......number previous to me is an AC number after mine is one of our drivers!!!!!

GabriellaG54 Tue 06-Aug-19 19:41:35

GrannyGravy13
Haha...I guess your driver would be quite shocked to read your introduction and request to text chat. ??
That would go round the village like wildfire ??

Just because anyone doesn't share your sense of humour doesn't mean 'their humour has been lobotomised' Maybe it's just not funny.

GabriellaG54 Tue 06-Aug-19 21:24:59

Jane10
Ever heard of 'tongue in cheek' or does each post have to have a warning saying ' funny to some' or 'I find this sad/funny but you may not'?

If you're offended by my wording then report me.
There are more snowflakes on here than an Arctic blizzard.

Jane10 Tue 06-Aug-19 21:44:51

'Tongue in cheek' is extremely hard to convey on a posting forum. Telling people that don't think it's funny that there's something wrong with them if they don't laugh certainly doesn't contribute to rib tickling fun.
Can't see anyone else splitting their sides over that content either.

MawB Tue 06-Aug-19 21:57:46

Snowflakes? ❄️❄️❄️.
Or people with more to interest/engage/amuse them? More in their lives?
I tend to be sceptical of people who tell me “such and such” is “the latest fad” or that social media is “awash with it”
I haven’t seen any evidence anywhere and even if I did, it sounds totally uninteresting.
Why on earth would I want to do this? “Oh what a hoot! “
Really? hmmhmm

GabriellaG54 Tue 06-Aug-19 22:56:37

Ok Jane10.
You don't find it funny. So what?
I didn't say that you had to agree.
Just give my posts a miss in future.
Our views are poles apart.

crazyH Tue 06-Aug-19 23:03:45

I think it's quite a strange 'fad'......quite funny though. And no, I haven't received any such text.

BradfordLass72 Wed 07-Aug-19 03:01:47

No mobile phone, so no problems smile

BradfordLass72 Wed 07-Aug-19 03:05:17

But if I had, I would find an inane intrusion into my privacy far from funny.

GabriellaG54 Wed 07-Aug-19 10:20:38

I doubt that anyone has much privacy nowadays when those people with mobile phones have cookies placed on their phones every time they're online.

You have to give ever more data to open bank accounts, shop, use public services and social media is awash with the minutiae of people's lives and then some, willingly put in the public domain.

I do agree that it's an intrusion and lots of people won't think it's funny however, it was the responses which made me laugh, not the conception.

Jane10 Wed 07-Aug-19 13:20:18

If we're ❄ what does that make you Gabriella? One emoji springs to mind but you might not think it was funny.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 07-Aug-19 15:50:47

Haven't seen this one.

Right now I am inundated with text messages telling me my parcel is ready to collect, but not where to do so.

Needless to say I haven't ordered anything.

I do wonder what the point if it is. Any ideas?

NanTheWiser Wed 07-Aug-19 18:10:37

Considering we are always being warned about phone scammers (especially the elderly) this really isn't very funny. I would be damned furious if I got a call from someone I didn't know.

NanTheWiser Wed 07-Aug-19 18:13:15

And what MawB said...

Glammy57 Wed 07-Aug-19 18:19:55

Well, Mr Obama is more than welcome to text me!

What a shame that being on GN often feels like entering “Bitch City”!

I await some people telling me that I don’t have to be here....

GabriellaG54 Wed 07-Aug-19 20:31:41

I can laugh at anything, even if the joke's on me Jane10 so don't hold back.
I have a broad back and can bite bullets.

SpringyChicken Wed 07-Aug-19 23:37:58

I agree, Glammy57.
