I have on occasions posed on the local Gransnet page.
In my case Northampton , which can include places like MK, it can be used for those who want a local meet up in a café or other , with the username introduction.

I thought these local pages were all shut down now?

tanith Sat 10-Aug-19 09:43:42

There isn’t any movement on my local ones most of the time.

Elegran Sat 10-Aug-19 10:33:52

Gransnet isn't supporting them any more, so it is not surprising that no-one else does.

I looked at my local a couple of times over a year ago. Nothing but tumble weed.

Local was never well supported and GN couldn't make money out of it. The local forums are still there but well hidden and unused.
Meetups are arranged on the main forum. Other local discussions are on other online platforms.

I join GN with the need to have a local group. Having moved counties (450 miles) I left all my friends I met up with regularly.

The local groups near me (Cornwall) are still listed but nothing's happened on them for years. I put something on the main forum and 2 posts, one from a person that used to live here and the other that was about to move out.

I tried the facebook page for local GN.

As has been said, perhaps they are not very popular anymore, which is a shame.

The local pages were edited by volunteer local editors. At first, Gransnet helped a little, but the remit was limited (not much scope for individuality) and there was very little support from members generally. There were already groups of members meeting locally for coffee or lunch, and making friends, (and also groups which crossed local boundaries), and sites with a more narrow focus didn't seem to appeal. After a while, Gransnet lessened the scope of the editors even further and many (most?) of the editors left. There are only a few of the local sites left which still have anyone actively editing and promoting them, and most people now only use the main central site.

Elegran, the local sites were abandoned completely over a year ago. All that's left are the forums that are accessed from the forum menu above. There's been nothing posted in my area for yonks.

Nothing`s happened on ours for so long that I`ve given up visiting there.

Pittcity I'd given up paying any attention to the local sites before that. I had become a bit cynical about what had been the motives behind setting them up when we first applied to edit our respective sites. Yours went on longer and more successfully that the Edinburgh one.

Hi Mick, watch the Meet ups/where are you thread for local get togethers.
We arrange one in MK every couple of months or so when we get around to it.

I have just checked. Nothing on our local one since 2014/15.

It's ridiculous that we can only contact one another on here. Surely there must be lots of ladies that would like to meet up for lunch coffee days out. To make new friends. I've lost touch with alot of ladies because I was house bound last year due to breaking my ankle. I would love to make new friends in my local area.

dragonfly46 Mon 12-Aug-19 11:26:33

Can we start them up again?

Elegran Mon 12-Aug-19 11:36:04

Hymnbook No-one is stopping you meeting people through the local page if you can organise it, it is just that no-one but you is looking at it. I don't see what is ridiculous about that? Do you think the few admin staff at GNHQ should be running several hundred local pages and organising meetups on all of them as well as maintaining the main pages?

So make the first contact on here, and then you will be able to contact your new friends by ordinary email, by old-fashioned telephone or even by arranging the next meeting before you part at the first one.

Look at www.gransnet.com/forums/meet_ups_where_are_you for the list of planned meet-ups. If there isn't one in your area, start a new conversation there yourself suggesting it.

The reason some areas have successful social lives with frequent meetups and interesting outings is that someone took the trouble to organise them.

dratgonfly If you were prepared to keep posting on a local site, and persuading others to post too and to look at it daily to see who else had posted and answer all comments, then I daresay you could still use it. But be warned, it takes committment and a lot of work to drum up the kind of membership that makes that kind of page a success.

I reckon that it would have been better if the local sites had been completely deleted when Gransnet HQ stopped supporting the local editors because of the lack of enthusiasm from GN members, then no-one would even know they existed, and wouldn't expect anything from them. As it is, they are there but dead.

I agree Elegran. Our meet ups are arranged initially on the main forum and then by pm. It works.

dragonfly, teetime, did ours and worked really hard at it but it came to nought!
