Does your husband / partner ever shock you ?

I love my plants (fruit, veg and flowers) and spend much of my day digging, weeding etc. The slugs have been playing havoc with so much this summer both in the polytunnel and garden.

I'm sat doing a few GN games tonight before bed and hear DH come in. He appears by my side with a large shovel full of slugs. "How many do you think I've found tonight?".

I do love him. So do the hedgehogs by now smile

Have you ever been shocked or surprised by husband or partner?

My DH shocked me yesterday. He bought me a surprise pair of dark green curtains he thinks I will love putting up for Xmas!
He hasn’t got any cognitive disorder ( he’s younger than me and uni lecturer ) he just wanted to show his appreciation and got creative about it! The last time he made a surprise for me it was a dinner when I was recovering from op. It was, wait for it, red kidney beans well and truly cooked , with spices ! I was surprised ? Lol. I was expecting chicken soup ?.

lemongrove Sun 11-Aug-19 12:13:43

No, never ? to answer the OP.
( it’s all good though, as I don’t like shocks or surprises.)

My DH will often say, when in a supermarket, “shall I treat you to some flowers? Choose some you like!” Paid for out of Our Housekeeping Money of course! His wallet never sees daylight.

I buy my husband flowers every week!!!

This is the most recent surprise my husband has brought me. I got quite used to otter spraints and other things in the freezer from our young days... We are hoping the hedgehog has taken up residence in our (very wild!) garden. He was trotting along the road en route to a garden full of slug pellets when DH intercepted him.

Lovely story Pantglas1 what a romantic your husband is (secretly)

I told my husband you feel sorry for him Ninathenana he appreciates the support grin

My better half has often given me presents out of the blue - most are great, including flowers, plants, clothes that fit, helpful/useful things (most recent being one of those things to open bottles & jars as I was having difficulty - only failed once in 8 months, and I was particularly poorly & weak that day, so love that). He did buy me an airfix-type model kit he thought I'd like as I do jigsaw puzzles and like crossword/sudoku/ puzzle books - that is still in the back of a cupboard in the box - think it was a plane or something to make! He does the shopping and most of the time gets it right, brings me nice treats - but every now and then he'll come back with something weird (luckily 'our' foxes will try most things). When he worked in an office he once came home and gave me a huge bouquet (think Del Boy in the Only Fools and Horses episode when he first met Raquel - but lovely posh flowers) and explained how a woman in his office had been sent them by an ex she'd punched on the nose and split up with for cheating on her - she was going to bin the flowers so my better half said he'd give them to me instead - apparently all the office thought he'd lie about where he got them - he didn't, and I loved and appreciated them - I'm a very practical person and hate wastefulness - in fact there were so many flowers my neighbour got a vaseful too. I said perhaps she should kick him if he tries to contact her again and I might get champagne and chocolates to go with the bouquet giggling. He posts my competition postcard entries even though he has an aversion to posting letters - things like that remind me I'm loved when I am having bad days.

Love some of the posts on this thread - hoping I remember the pussy willow one to tell him and his business partner when they get back (yes, they are still working weekends - the joys of being self-employed). Keep them coming.

My hubby of 46yrs is always very generous with gifts for me so l do consider myself very lucky.
One year though on my Birthday he took me out for dinner. We were shown to our table by the waiter and upon sitting down and unfolding my napkin l found a jewellery box hidden inside it which contained a really lovely eternity ring ! (and it was a perfect fit ??.)
To this day l have still haven’t managed to work out how he arranged it to be there as l usually know exactly where he is going or where he will be. Also l’m normally with him or l am using the car !
Nice to know they can surprise you at least once in 46yrs !

On my 65th my OH said I haven't got you anything because I didn’t know what to get and handed me a card. The inside sentiments were lovely but the outside said Happy 70th Birthday. I was not amused!!

My DH often buys me gifts, nothing overly expensive. He will on occasion book a holiday for the two of us. The strangest 'gift' I received from him was a framed photograph of Larry the Downing Street cat. He hung it in the kitchen. To this day I have no idea why.

My husband was recently diagnosed with a genetic eye problem, which resulted in him losing his job and his driving licence. Driving was his life (and his job). He dealt with the whole situation with humour, optimism, kindness towards me, (he got rid of the car as he knows I'm petrified of driving) and just generally coped amazingly with what was a life changing diagnosis. Normally when things go pear shaped, he gets moody and often quite bad tempered. The way he has dealt with things was really quite surprising!

Grammaretto Sun 11-Aug-19 15:03:37

My DH of 50yrs very occasionally surprises me but he's always kind and never loses his temper.

Once when our boys were young and fighting he got genuinely cross and shouted. We were all petrified. It was so out of character. I think he surprised himself! The fight stopped instantly.

He's not very good at surprises and always seems to let me know if he sees something he thinks I'd like.

He bought me a book for my birthday but decided to read it first so I haven't even seen it yet.

When youngest was born he picked me a bunch of flowers from our own garden which I was really happy about! He knows me well.

Barmeyoldbat Sun 11-Aug-19 16:26:41

Mine does suddenly appear with a bunch of flowers and once, just once, he gave me a small box with a beautiful blue glass perfume bottle inside. He knew how much I liked glass he said.

For our anniversary we went to the Isle of Wight. What I didn't know was my OH had arranged for the whole family to be there too. We met them all on the beach !!

granma47 Sun 11-Aug-19 17:22:32

When he was working away from home as he often did, my other half brought home a single rose, an unusual deed! I laughed when I saw it as he knew I would and he had to confess it was left over from the course he was working on when one of the female clients didn't take it home. (The men were given a half bottle of whisky each but no-one left that behind.)

TerriBull Sun 11-Aug-19 18:00:43

On my husband's 60th we went to Rome and I asked him if he would like me to buy him something special, he told me he regretted not having a wedding ring when we married and that's what he wanted. I was really surprised by that he'd never mentioned it before and I didn't think to ask at the time, anyway he got his wish, that's what I bought him.

absthame Sun 11-Aug-19 19:33:04

It is always a shock when I'm asleep in the middle of the night and my wife flings her arm out, giving me a thwack on the head shock

GreenGran78 Sun 11-Aug-19 20:08:58

Absthame. Count your blessings. My DH, who normally lay very still while sleeping, once let out an almighty yell, flung out his arm, and belted me in the mouth.

I woke up crying with shock, and with a tooth hanging loose.

RomyP Sun 11-Aug-19 20:50:09

Marpau, that pussy willow comment still has me chuckling a good 10 minutes after reading it. Can't wait to relate it to my husband, hope he laughs as much as I have.

Day6 Sun 11-Aug-19 21:07:45

I still muse sometimes about how caring OH is. He is so unlike ex husband who took me for granted and created great unhappiness in our family life. I learnt during our marriage to become very independent, self-reliant and pretend I had a hard shell so he couldn't hurt me.

It was a wonderful 'shock' or revelation on getting to know OH to find that partners could be so thoughtful - every day. We have been together for almost two decades now and I must take care never to take his thoughtfulness for granted now I am used to it. It makes it so easy to reciprocate as well. It's been a learning curve and a new way of life for me! smile

gillybob Sun 11-Aug-19 22:33:36

Some lovey posts. I have enjoyed reading all those lovely, romantic gestures and one or two funny ones too.

I can’t honestly say DH has ever surprised me with anything ever.

sharon103 Sun 11-Aug-19 23:52:02

Yes, when the B left me.

absent Mon 12-Aug-19 07:44:26
