The fly in the ointment?

Anybody find there is often one thing perhaps hanging over you and you find yourself thinking”If that wasn’t happening , or if only this wasn’t ....everything would be fine” ?
Whether it is an upcoming dental appointment, or a niggling pain or (in my case) wondering why the airbag light has come on in the car and I need it today and tomorrow) it is just that one cloud on the horizon, that one fly in the ointment!

kittylester Wed 14-Aug-19 13:08:21

Yep! And, when that disappears another one flipping well turns up. Some are, obviously bigger niggles than others.

Gonegirl Wed 14-Aug-19 13:11:57

Yep. I agree. Mind you, if by chance there should be no fly, I will definitely find one. Born worrier. hmm

I find that after the fly,the swarm follows close behind it.

BBbevan Wed 14-Aug-19 14:35:59

And when you reach 70, it's one fly after the other ?

suziewoozie Wed 14-Aug-19 14:36:33

Not quite the same, but I often find myself worrying about something that needs doing instead of doing it and when I finally do it, I can’t believe that I just didn’t get on and do it earlier. ?

Gaunt47 Wed 14-Aug-19 14:47:29

suziewoozie, that's exactly where I am today! Trying to get chores done, and then realising that I can't do that until I've done this. Those pesky flies buzzing. Oh I'll go and make a cup of tea and see what gransnetters are saying....

EllanVannin Wed 14-Aug-19 14:51:59

That's me all over suziewoozie.

KatyK Wed 14-Aug-19 15:17:24

Oh yes.

Squiffy Wed 14-Aug-19 15:17:51

... and another one here, Suzie! ?

M0nica Wed 14-Aug-19 15:21:52

sooziewoozie you are so right.

The current fly in my ointment is having to drive from Kent to Nottingham on Monday. This will involve leaving at 5am to hopfully get through the @#$% Dartford tunnel smoothly.

Grannynise Wed 14-Aug-19 17:38:44

The airbag light in my car has been on for about 4 years, Maw. It is possible to make it go off but it just comes on again. The mechanic has assured me that it is meaningless and stuck some black tape over it. Fly in ointment - sorted!

Fennel Wed 14-Aug-19 17:59:53

I said this about my colonosopy appt. on Monday - if only Tuesday was here!
I do feel more relaxed now , but no doubt there'll be another crisis.
C'est la vie!

PamelaJ1 Wed 14-Aug-19 18:12:51

Fennel, stop worrying- nothing to it! The clear out the day before is worse!

Every time I think I’ve caught up. Paid the insurance ect.
The postman turns up with more stuff to deal with.

dragonfly46 Thu 15-Aug-19 09:12:02

Yep I have constant flies!

BradfordLass72 Fri 16-Aug-19 06:34:19

I used to say that Pamela.

'Just as I've got a little bit put by, summat comes up which means I have to spend it and I'm back to square one -skint.'

My younger son said one day, 'But Mum, you should be saying, "Thank goodness I've got enough put by to pay that unexpected bill".'

And he's right. So now I see it that way and feel all the happier for it.

gmarie Fri 16-Aug-19 07:20:22

Yes to OP and same to suziewoozie. The latter is why I'm on here now and not scoring and commenting on the SAT prep essays I need to have done by Saturday. hmm

PamelaJ1 Fri 16-Aug-19 07:22:23

Bradford- I will try.
He is quite right, easier to write a cheque and go and post it than worry about where the money is coming from.

Iam64 Fri 16-Aug-19 07:50:12

Yes and especially yes to the idea from BBevan that after 70, its one fly after the other.

MawB Fri 16-Aug-19 09:11:00

Grannynise grin
I had to drive my 4 year old grand daughter back to Birmingham on Wednesday - 75+ miles up the M1 and M6 in diabolical rain with road closures and diversions to cope with - I was a nervous wreck by the time I got there, but made it, and back again yesterday. However I must ring the garage this morning as I am driving down to Somerset next weekend and my fear is not so much the absence of an airbag (I have never had one inflate) but that if there is a fault it might just explode up into my face while driving! ???

SirChenjin Fri 16-Aug-19 11:01:14

Money here too - never enough of it. 3 kids from 12-22, mortgage, cars, utilities, credit card, food, house maintenance...it never flipping stops. At this rate DH and I will never retire.

BradfordLass72 Sat 17-Aug-19 11:40:30

MawB good idea to get it checked as my mechanic friend tells me they can be extremely dangerous if they pop unexpectedly and very expensive to re-install once inflated.

The very small fly in my ointment at the moment is the young man just over the fence from my house.
He's crazy about drumming and goes at it, very loudly and vigorously at all hours.

Normally this would be a case of calling the Council's noise control people so they could have a word.

But in this case, none of my neighbours will do so, despite finding they can hardly hear their TVs for the racket.

The reason? The drummer has Down Syndrome and this is his only pleasure and relaxation.

The fly in my ointment can be suppressed with earplugs. smile
