Sending gifts to the US

Order from US Amazon and have them delivered.

I LOVE the book depository. Books are similar prices to Amazon but postage is 100% free, always, to anywhere in the world.

Not gifts, but some fabric I wanted to buy from the US. Fabrics very cheap there.
I had bought one lot and the customs duty at this end was more than the cost of the fabric. I would think the US charge customs duty too?
At the time we had friends who had a holiday house there and she offered to buy the fabric and bring it back with them. She did bring other things as presents, and masnaged to avoid customs duty (I think).
So to get to the point, how about asking someone already there to purchase the gift for you?

I sent my nephew flowers when he got married in New York. The cost was extortionate. They do not seem to have Interflora over there. I would have thought that as they were in an urban area it would be easy but the delivery cost twice as much as the flowers.

Always email the nearest florist in the country/county/zip-code area of the recipient. This way it's never cost me a fortune to have flowers/chocs/wine etc sent to my family in Oz.

Hi there, I'm an American who lives in the UK so this comes up a lot for me. I simply google gift sites in the area I wish to send the item and pay via PayPal. Most companies allow you to check out via PayPal and Paypal will convert the currency at a decent exchange rate.

I sent flowers to a friend in the US by searching for a local florist and dealing with them directly.

Also, a friend's daughter had her wedding list at Crate & Barrel (homeware, Habitat sort of place) so I suppose you can order a gift for delivery.

Wouldn't the recipient have to pay import duty as we do here.

US chocolate us total rubbish so I wouldn't buy any.

I buy my overseas Xmas gifts (just 2 to the USA) from The Book Depository as they send items post free anywhere in the world.

I would use Amazon US. Sending anything from the UK is very expensive. I sent two small books for my grand daughter in Canada. The books were 50p each from a book sale. They cost me over £13 to post them!
I regularly use Amazon CA and that works well. They don't do as much as Amazon UK but I can always find something.
