Eh? How Can a song that promotes all skin tones and cultures being put into a big melting pot, so that we all come out the same, be in any way racist? It was written and sung by a group of black/mixed race people, specifically to draw attention to the fact that skin colour is irrelevant. Has the world gone mad? Who are these perpetually offended people who see offence where none is intended and what is their aim?

.... and more worryingly, that one person manages to get others to ban something that the majority find no offence in whatsoever!! Grrr

Music is an art form, are we now gong to have great paintings, statues, Shakespeare censored? Enid Blyton has been targeted this week for be NF homophobic and racist, she was just an author of "her time".

I read about that too, on the strength of one complaint, it's an historical song now and reflects the time. As Chewbacca said it's about the irrelevance of skin colour.

From being played on radio tv , from our homes if we dare to enjoy our record / cd collections, OR all Duke boxes ( are they still called that ?

I understand it's just one word that is being objected to. I hesitate to actually use the word.

I love that song - a really evocative pop song, really reminiscent of the era!

And, I suppose all the songs from the punk era are totally PC!!

're GrannyGravy's reference to Enid Blyton: earlier this month it was my granddaughter's 7th birthday and she asked me for some "nice books". I went into that well known high street bookshop that begins with W and searched the shelves for some of the Famous Five books. None to be found anywhere. I asked the assistant if she could point me in the right direction and she told me, rather sniffily, that they didn't have any in stock, but could order them if I wanted, but they "were promoting a better quality of children's authors than Enid Blyton". That felt like censorship to me and I said so and left the shop. Next shop was that other retailer who sells card, stationary and books. They had a good selection of Enid Blyton books and I bought 3.

I've just finished reading one of the Famous Five stories to my granddaughter and it struck me just how far seeing and ahead of her time Enid Blyton was. First written in 1942, the stories feature a girl who is clearly transgender (George); a boy who isn't the stereotypical male and isn't afraid to say he's frightened (Dick) and a girl who, despite being timid and nervous is actually as strong and determined as the others when under pressure (Ann).

So why are Enid Blytons books looked at rather sneeringly? They might not be high brow literature but they were a damned good read for avid young readers to enjoy. And ahead of their time too.

A bar of Cadbury's chocolate has also come in for a grilling in Australia. It's a new product with dark choc. milk choc. and white choc. all in the one bar, calling it a " unity bar " celebrating diversity. In actual fact there are 4 colours ?

Social media have sarcastically thanked them for solving racism !

Pages 15-18 deal with this particular issue. Not a ban as such but Gold have deleted it from their play list so it’s considered resolved. When this song first came out, I thought it was great that it was dealing with the issue of racism. Some of the language has not stood the test of time but as GG said that’s true of other songs/ books/plays. This holiday we’ve read Alice in Wonderland to the dgc - perhaps I shouldn’t have because of LC’s reputation with young girls? I suppose generally I believe we should judge a cultural artefact of any kind by the standards prevailing at the time it was produced and/or the producer but there will be exceptions for some people eg Wagner

The lyrics to Blurred Lines are horrible; completely unacceptable in the 21st century or any other but was a smash hit. Why wasn't that banned I wonder?

Nothing has been banned as such. But anyway someone has first to complain that a song has been broadcast and then Ofcom investigate. There are some creepy songs like Young Girl and Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,

Maggie May by Rod Stewart is one of my all time favourites, listen to the lyrics, not very PC.

How about 'living doll' by Cliff Richard? Creepiest of all.

"Clair" sung by Gilbert O'Sullivan would never be allowed now.

Actually DanniRae, that song Clair by Gilbert O'Sullivan made me uncomfortable when it was released, and I didn't know what a paedophile was.
Living Doll and all those songs celebrating a young girl reaching 16 were creepy.
