Cream teas

I’m inclined to stay in my little grove and stray very little these days, for a number of reasons.
Husband never has been good at coming up with ideas for leisure time, but in the past I had enough ideas for 10 people!
So, I thought I must kick myself up the rear and do something about it.
Came up with going out over the summer ‘testing’ cream teas all over the country!
Weather has been great in and out so we’ve had a great little run around using this idea to spur us into more and more places.
Just come back from Snowdonia (not much walking for us but lovely beautiful scenery isn’t it?).
Rated our cream tea 8 out of 10 scone big enough for two, tea made with loose leaves, lovely bone china cups....and saucers!! Friendly helpful staff, quaint welsh cottage,.....but cream was squirty can cream, not clotted or double hence only 8 points!!!

Any one recommend one more before the season ends?

Lovely idea for getting out and about. One more cream tea can be found in the Cotswolds - either westonbirt or batsford. Autumn is the perfect time. XX

What a lovely idea! I hope you came to Cornwall and put the jam on first!

We had a lovely one the other day, but it was in a garden centre, not too far from us. Sorry, that's not much help to you.

If you are in SWWales, the Grove at Narberth does an excellent tea

Daisymae….That's a really good idea. I haven't been to Westonbirt for many years. We used to take the kids when they were young.

Auntiflo….I don't know, is your garden centre in a pretty area?smile

BBbevan...I've just looked it up and it looks beautiful!
We were trying to find comfy or odd curious or quirky or just some place with an old fashioned vibe to it.
Anything a bit like this:

Or even like this....gorgeous isn’t it?

Great idea - but squirty cream on scones - NO - I could not give any cream tea with squirty cream more than 5 sad

ginny Sat 28-Sep-19 20:57:46

Lovely idea. We always check that the cream is clotted. Anything else and we leave.

Ah, Bibury is lovely, with Arlington Row round the corner from that bridge smile

lemongrove Sat 28-Sep-19 21:11:26

Had lunch at The Swan in Bibury two weeks ago, but haven’t had a cream tea since July ( in Devon) the only cream teas worth having, are in Devon or in Cornwall.

lemongrove Sat 28-Sep-19 21:12:09

Devon clotted cream.....mmmmm

kittylester Sat 28-Sep-19 21:12:19

I lived opposite that fabulous ivy clad house when I was very young.

Namsnanny Sat 28-Sep-19 21:21:48

Kittylester…….How lovely, are you welsh then Kitty?
What was it then, just a home/farm?

LondonGranny Sat 28-Sep-19 21:23:38

Agree with 'no to squirty cream' but not worried about whether clotted or whipped double though. The jam and scones have to be good too though. I did once have a cream tea where the cup of tea was a bag in a mug though!

Try The Connaught Gardens in Sidmouth, Devon but only if you can manage large portions! You can choose to have either 1 or 2 scones with your cream tea smile

BTW jura2...this isn't Bibury, it's in Snowdonia!

LondonGranny….I use bags all the time, but not for a cream tea!!
I like the whole thing to have a 'homemade' attention to detail, quality about it.
Not like a conveyer belt.

Squirty cream would bring the score down to 3 out of 10 for me!

BBbevan Sun 29-Sep-19 06:14:42

We often have tea in Tir Hwnt ir Bont* kittylester* , and we are off to Llanrwst tomorrow. The tea room usually closes for the winter at the end of October and is very susceptible to flooding. Love the Conwy valley

Now that Autumn is upon us why not change the scoring from cream teas to warming soups. Lots of places sell tasty homemade soup with crusty bread or rolls. This will give you another chance to have outings of the same vein smile

Urmstongran Sun 29-Sep-19 09:00:23

What a ‘souper’ idea travelsafar!

Witzend Sun 29-Sep-19 09:14:13

Yes - it is after all 'the season of mists and mellow soupfulness' - certainly in this house, where thick main-course soups with stacks of seasonal veg/lentils/pearl barley etc. are often on the menu.

The last cream tea I had was thousands of feet up in the air in an aeroplane coming home from Rhodes.........and very nice it was too. grin

There are loads of places in Devon for a proper cream tea (and we've sampled most of them) but I've never been offered squirty cream.
If I recall correctly King's Garden Centre in Exmouth do a great cream tea, as does 'a la Ronde' which is just round the corner.
Now I don't want to start a fight but when we lived in Devon it was cream first.

jura2 Sun 29-Sep-19 09:30:02

ah Namsnanny- the Cotswolds were mentionned, and it did really look like Bibury smile
