I feel a bit silly for raising this; but as they told me when I first dived (dove?) into computer world, there's no such thing as a stupid question; I'm still trying! hmm
I'm in the market for a small 1 person chip fryer. I appreciate your brands will be different from ours, although their function will be similar, but I'm certain success will lie with the type of oil ; what type is best and can it be re-used several times? Obviously when it smells I might bin it, but it must produce crisp chips, not soggy as featured in that Dad's Army prog. grin Is the type of spud critical?
Sales kids in the shops will probably try to tell me anything to make a sale, so your expert advice would be welcome
Oh! by the way, inexpensive! wink
Ta!
Well; what do you know,? I haven't posted yet and a heap of fryer ads have appeared ! That's unnerving!

I used cooked leftovers that I chip and fry.

I understand from watching cooking TV, that when you cook chips from a raw state you double fry. Cook a batch, then drain on kitchen roll, then you do the second batch, then drain the second batch and cook the first batch again this time until browned, repeat.

Ours was similar to this one, but I dont think it was Breville. Might have been Tefal. Tempted to buy this one myself. Miss having real chips.

Best oil definitely rapeseed oil. You can leave it in the pan and use it for several fryings.

I use vegetable oil, use it multiple times - you can tell when it needs changing by colour/smell/bits in it.
Some potatoes are better than others (at the moment I'm using Estima) but I find that by first soaking the chips in cold water for an hour or so and secondly making sure they are completely dry (rub in clean tea towel) and then fry they crisp up. I fry in slightly lower temp than recommended on my machine (Tefal) and do two or three short bursts, let oil come back to temp between each. Bit of trial end error and learn as you go.

I might go for this one if I was buying. Only 1 ltr oil. Can't get smaller than that. direct.asda.com/george/home/cooking-appliances/tefal-minifryer-ff220040-deep-fryer/050752826,default,pd.html?cmpid=ppc-_-george-_-ggle-pla-_-OD16HOME_GARDEN-_--_-dskwid-s92700047079934141_dc&ds_rl=1238816&ds_rl=1254577&gclid=CjwKCAiAlO7uBRANEiwA_vXQ-7RyV8M8OUFCCkP0Tra8JHqiCxMTyG9R3jpKb0qUcOqkBFEopwBjohoCa14QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Potatoes usually say on the bag what they are best for.

Have you considered an air fryer? They only use a tiny bit of oil.

A friend invited a few of us to an air frier party. I personally found the chips to be nothing like real chips. My own recipe is to cut potatoes into chips, boil very briefly, drain, cool, then toss in a little bit of oil and roast in the oven.

jusnoneed; I thought that might be so! However, not being a cook, call me Mister Microwave, I follow the path of least resistance which led me to our supermarket's frozen food aisle to do a reco. on frozen chips. It's a whole new world! Straight chips, crinkled, beer -battered, wedges!
Never stopped there before other than for frozen hash browns, but frozen chips were everywhere, Aussie, Belgium, Germany were all there. Couldn't see any from Ireland ! grin
No spud names, though!
And then a sight to behold! A box of Bird's Eye" "Golden Crunch microwave chips Crinkles" The blurb on the carton even advertised "Simply cook in the microwave (duh!)" in just 4 mins. Can't go wrong, or can I? Will report back as to whether the "duh" is not tongue-in- cheek.
Cheers

How about a thank you for the recommendations?

Those Mcain microwave chips are nothing to write home about.

Gonegirl Tue 26-Nov-19 14:16:52

No doubt the Birds Eye ones are the same.

Gonegirl Tue 26-Nov-19 14:17:55

polyester that's wedges. Nothing like as good as deep fryed chips.

I used to have a Lakeland one but it had to go as it was far too tempting to have chips too often

Ah McCain, you've done it again. wink
Gonegirl; We need to talk! Are tou the same Gonegirl that had a chip on her shoulder about me some time ago "Your posts are rubbish and I'm not going to read them again", or has that Gonegirl gone and you're her twin sister!? You seem somewhat nicer, but whoever you are you don't have to come soliciting for thank-yous.! You'll get them when the credits roll at the end of the video, somewhere under "Clapper Boy" grin

Roses; Welcome and thanks for that. Looked at Lakeland via Dr.Google and I too would have it on all day. It's opened up new horizons. Recipes for everything ; "bhaji, samosa as in "Best Indian Punjabi Samosa recipe" , but somehow I don't I'll be going there. hmm
Quail eggs sounds interesting, but hard to come by here, so I'll stick with microwaveable frozen chips for now.
Cheers
