Anyone ever experienced drifting off to sleep and hearing knocking on their door... all very odd

EllanVannin Sat 29-Feb-20 11:57:17

Yes, I have on one or two occasions. Glad you mentioned it. I've even lain awake waiting for another. It's probably an over-active brain---I hope, but it's never anyone knocking to get out ! sad hahahaha.

Trendynannie I've never my MIL who lived with us, often said that she heard knocking on the door! I don't mean to be cheeky but are you on any medication? Wonder whether there would be a connection, as she was on a lot of tablets.

Me too, really creepy glad to hear I am not the only one.
I have often asked DD if she had knocked on my door at night always one of "those" looks and, noooo Mum!

eazybee Sat 29-Feb-20 12:11:58

Yes, I do sometimes, and although I have a doorknocker I don't hear it in all parts of the house, so people who know me will bang loudly on the door.
Quite creepy at night. Reassuring to know it happens to others.

It'll be Heathcliff.

Yennifer Sat 29-Feb-20 12:17:51

I think it's like the sensation of falling some people get when they drop off. I sometimes hear my name shouted and wake up again with a start x

Septimia Sat 29-Feb-20 12:18:23

With me, it's usually the phone ringing, middle of the night but when I check there hasn't been a call.

EllanVannin Sat 29-Feb-20 12:25:38

I think I'd worry more if I heard a doorbell as I haven't got one.

Just read about folklore and it would appear to signify a death.
There have been 4 near me of late.

TrendyNannie6 Sat 29-Feb-20 12:29:53

Lol no you are not being cheeky bluesky, I am on meds but nothing that would make me hear thingsLol, I’ve heard things like this for many years, even when on no meds, as a child.

TrendyNannie6 Sat 29-Feb-20 12:30:56

Heathcliff ???

Curlywhirly Sat 29-Feb-20 12:37:24

On occasion I have heard the door bell, the phone ring and someone calling my name; all whilst drifting off to sleep. Luckily, my husband was next to me, and awake, and he assured me none of them had happened. I think it's just our mind playing tricks as we are in the twilight zone, just befire dropping off.

BlueBelle Sat 29-Feb-20 12:42:38

I have on occasions ( not many) been convinced I heard the doorbell ring I ve woken rushed downstairs to nothing it’s been more real that real
And no I m not a drinker and not on any medication
I agree it’s our minds

Esspee Sat 29-Feb-20 12:42:41

Never knocking but occasionally that falling sensation ?

Lucca Sat 29-Feb-20 12:51:47

Yes in my previous house I often “heard ” the doorbell. There was never anyone there, not even Heathcliff (as played by Ralph fiennes....I wish?)

Scribbles Sat 29-Feb-20 13:02:36

It hasn't happened to me for several years but when we lived in our old house, I sometimes used to wake suddenly, convinced the doorbell had been rung. Like BlueBelle, I would run downstairs to see who was there but nobody ever was.

I wasn't on meds and only once did OH stir and reckon he'd heard it too - but maybe that was the one time we had a pre-season player of Knock Up Ginger!

Scribbles Sat 29-Feb-20 13:03:34

Pre season dawn!!

Calendargirl Sat 29-Feb-20 13:05:55

Ellanvannin

Didn’t want to alarm anyone, but like you my first thought on reading this was that knocking on doors signifies death. Supposed to be those who’ve gone before and getting ready for newcomers I suppose.
Folklore as you say.

Calendargirl Sat 29-Feb-20 13:07:24

Years ago, when my cat went missing, (never found), I was always jumping up in the night to go to the door, convinced I had heard him meowing.

GagaJo Sat 29-Feb-20 13:23:15

Ah Calendargirl, I've been there. Very sad.

SueDonim Sat 29-Feb-20 13:51:22

I’ve had some of those mentioned, door bell, phone, a bell ringing. Also thunder claps and lightening flashes! I do the falling thing, as well. I nearly landed on the floor the other night when I ‘fell’.

I also dream a lot, I just assume I lead a very busy life at night. grin

3nanny6 Sat 29-Feb-20 14:01:40

Ellanvannin ; This thread is scary because when I saw it I thought of the folklore and the meaning that knocking on doors speaks of death. I am getting paranoid now as about two weeks ago I thought I heard a knock at the door and even opened it to look but nobody there. I put it down to the terrible gales and winds we were experiencing but something in the back of my mind was oh so bothered.

whywhywhy Sat 29-Feb-20 14:43:26

I've heard knocking on a attic door hatch at one of the houses that we lived at years ago. It was a new house, no previous owners. Neither my husband or my two children heard a thing. It could happen any time, either day or night. We lived there for 4 years and it was a troubled time between me and my husband.

lemongrove Sat 29-Feb-20 14:50:43

More likely to be Cathy ( than Heathcliff).....although she would be knocking at the window and crying ‘let me in!’?

whywhywhy Sat 29-Feb-20 15:03:18

Lemongrove it was probably me screaming "let me out"!
