The silver lining... Plusses from the 'panic'

Lots of people are cleaning like they never have before.

The shops are peaceful.

People are not spluttering in public.

People smile and nod as a greeting (not the grubby grab).

“Plusses “ of a pandemic? Really? Over 4,000 people have died . Also As someone who will not now be seeing family last seen nearly two years ago as they do not feel it’s safe to fly long haul I’m struggling with that concept sorry

Sandelf
I was reading about a resident in Venice. He was very happy as for the first time in years he could see his city?

MerylStreep Thu 12-Mar-20 12:48:57

Think of all the invites that you really don't want to attend.
You have a good excuse now.

Artdecogran Thu 12-Mar-20 12:52:27

Luca, I think you are missing the point of the post. Sandelf isn’t downplaying the virus, we all know it’s horrible and frightening and probably the worst thing since WWII. BUT during that time people had to keep going on and so do we now. I have a DD who is 8 months pregnant and works in a hospital with direct patient contact. I am frightened. To look on the bright side, just for a few moments, helps me.
My benefits are: less traffic outside my window.
No visitors.
Listening to music instead of tv as there’s too much doom and gloom.

It was mooted that millions of people worldwide would die from disasters resulting climate change.

Pollution is way down due to the shut downs in China, in Italy so perhaps we can learn some lessons from this and change the way we live to avert even worse disasters.

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 12:54:20

Resulting from climate change

Same here Lucca..should be going overseas beginning of April to help my daughter out with the children..and later in the year to Australia to see son and granddaughters.. all plans on hold now...

Jane10 Thu 12-Mar-20 12:55:38

Plenty of parking at the sports centre today and lots of room in the pool.
People are exchanging pleasantries. It's a good idea to try to think of positives at such a worrying time for everyone. We're all in it together after all.

Lucca Thu 12-Mar-20 12:55:58

Feeling as sad as I do today I’m prepared to accept the environmental plusses but not things like people doing more cleaning and not hugging and quiet shops

vampirequeen Thu 12-Mar-20 13:27:23

More people are washing their hands properly after using public (so hopefully also their own) toilets. Hopefully this will become a habit so that they don't spread toilet germs around.

EllanVannin Thu 12-Mar-20 13:31:10

I remain thankful that my family came from Australia to visit last summer for possibly the last time that I'll see them.

Eglantine21 Thu 12-Mar-20 13:35:19

For the first time since we moved in together I am not moaning at the lover for his long term habit of obsessively hoarding stocks of everything!

Suddenly the twelve tubes of toothpaste, six bottles of washing up liquid, twenty-two (I kid you not) bars of soap and, glory be, the four giant packs of toilet rolls seem like a really good thing?

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 13:40:37

Washing up liquid!
Thanks, Eglantine I will add it to my list.

Should we go shopping?

Charleygirl5 Thu 12-Mar-20 13:48:34

Eglantine a good job I do not live with "him indoors"- there would not be much space for us because I am also a hoarder but he does take the biscuit.

I only drink M&S coffee and always buy in bulk so for me buying 8 large jars last weekend was normal. The only thing I may run out of is bread.

Witzend Thu 12-Mar-20 14:06:45

It certainly makes a change from the endless, endless bloody Brexit on the news!

AllTheLs Thu 12-Mar-20 14:14:02

Brexit pales into insignificance, now, doesn't it. Anybody else feel a bit embarrassed about all the fuss made about it?

Anyway, the benefits: I'm keeping my fingers crossed that China really does stop its wildlife trading when this is over. They are driving endangered animals into extinction. When they realise that certain animal products aren't going to cure all their ills, and may just do the opposite, some of the animals may get a well needed reprieve.

sandelf Thu 12-Mar-20 14:20:23

Sorry to have upset people. I really do know there are horrible consequences too. Just was trying to see some possible benefits.

Eglantine21 Thu 12-Mar-20 14:42:28

Oh it’s the way GN is at the moment.

If I posted that I saw a rabbit in the garden someone would immediately post back saying what did I think I was doing and that rabbits are entitled to privacy!

May7 Thu 12-Mar-20 14:42:50

I think it's good to have some lighthearted postings Sandself you've nothing to apologise for IMO

Has anyone spoken to or heard of anyone who has recovered from this disease? We hear about the deaths on the news all the time but I havent heard from anyone who has endured it? I know there must be many.

I would be interested to know if someone had had mild symptoms and come through it?

travelsafar Thu 12-Mar-20 14:46:27

May7 me too . As my DH has COPD i would be interested to hear if anyone with this complaint has survived and if it has left any lasting damage to their lungs over and above what they already have.

rockgran Thu 12-Mar-20 14:50:56

I have a good excuse not to book any holidays - I don't really like holidays but my husband does.

Esther1 Thu 12-Mar-20 15:00:20

Nobody is playing down how serious this Coronavirus is, but to look for some good .... the antibacterial sprays actually being used at the gym instead of being ignored, and everyone simply washing their hands more, and more thoroughly. These habits need to stay with us.

Greymar Thu 12-Mar-20 15:14:59

sandelf, a brave attempt. I suppose it may mean less pointless running around. How on earth willl those with non IT based jobs manage? They must be so worried.

Jomarie Thu 12-Mar-20 17:14:25

Oh well done sandelf there is so much doom and gloom (rightly so of course) but it is refreshing to lighten the load a little - even if not everyone agrees - well, you can't please everyone all of the time. I too think it is about time someone came up with some good stats re recoveries made - even if just to encourage all of us to continue with the good hygiene work,
