Wouldn’t the airlines and businesses love the free publicity of how they took advantage of people in difficult situations?Example of the hotel which sent the wrong information to an employee last week and didn’t realize it, until it was on a radio broadcast.

Weatherspoons have laid off their staff and will only pay them up to 22nd March. Then they have to wait until the company gets it's money from the government before they'll be paid anything else. One worker said that they were only going to get basic pay for March even if they had achieved targets and would normally have got a bonus.

On the other hand Costa are paying staff in full for at least the next 8 weeks. If one big company can do it then they all can.

And the airlines hiking up the airfares so high that people are held over a barrel if they want to get home. The price of petrol has dropped, when it goes up of the price rises but all these people seem to be paying double.

I see shareholders and Stelios received large amounts of money this month. They have also asked for cash from the Government - something wrong with this system.

I don't understand why there's so much emphasis on bailing out cruise ship companies-

It reminds so much of the movie JAWS where the mayor was hellbent on keeping the beach open because of tourist revenues-

And airlines have some downright crappy practices and policies-

It's a "shame" that huge chunk of the population in the United States can't afford either! So why would we care about bailing them out?

That insidious Wetherspoon director calmly said of his staff "they'll all have to work at Tesco's won't they ".

Sports Direct has put up the online prices of the type of equipment people may use at home, some almost double.

Costa is a far bigger company than J.D.Wetherspoon. It's owned by the Coca Cola brand.

Callistemon Tue 24-Mar-20 23:20:02

I didn't know that.

GabriellaG54 Tue 24-Mar-20 23:23:30

If some of you owned a business which made goods or offered services which were in high demand, I bet a goodly proportion would hike prices.
If I'm wrong and absolutely none of you would dream of making a bigger profit in that manner, then I'd be the one in a million who would.

GabriellaG54 Tue 24-Mar-20 23:24:23

I know because I have shares.

I bet DT is bemoaning the fact that Maccies has closed it's doors for the forseeable future.
Apparently it's the only food he likes/trusts/eats.

The man who owns Wetherspoons could fund his staff from his own pocket until the government money comes in. Unlike his staff he wouldn't miss it and it's not as if he'd be losing it forever.

Profiteering is never right and should be legislated against if businesses don't have a moral compass.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 25-Mar-20 06:52:49

Our business is allowed to stay open, we have decided to close in order to protect our staff.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 25-Mar-20 06:53:40

Oh and we are paying them in full.

NfkDumpling Wed 25-Mar-20 06:56:18

Gosh, VQ I think this is the second time I’ve agreed with you!

MamaCaz Wed 25-Mar-20 07:37:20

Playing Devil's Advocate here, but we are led to believe that many airlines are already close to financial ruin, so if they have to fly empty planes out to 'rescue' people abroad, isn't it only to be expected that ticket prices will be very high, as they have to recoup all the costs associated with this unscheduled 'service'?

that virgin billionaire man, safe on his island, asking the government for a handout from us struggling taxpayers

mokryna Wed 25-Mar-20 08:15:38

I believe a new law was made a few weeks ago in France to stop profiteering.

sodapop Wed 25-Mar-20 08:29:32

I think Branson has actually put his hand in his pocket and given money back to the airline.

mcem Wed 25-Mar-20 08:31:23

Let's hope that Macron has another word in BoJo's ear and forces persuades him to do the right thing.

Pikachu Wed 25-Mar-20 08:42:34

Is that the same Branson who sued our NHS?

Chewbacca Wed 25-Mar-20 08:56:14

Yes it is Pikachu, the very same one angry
