Had three in the conservatory in the last day,
and they just seem to be bigger.
Any one else notice this as well?

Wasps? In April? hmm. Are you sure they weren't honey bees or hover flies?

Callistemon Sun 12-Apr-20 09:25:59

They could be queen wasps coming out of hibernation and looking for somewhere to establish a nest.

Callistemon Sun 12-Apr-20 09:27:31

We've had some, exploring the conservatory, behind d cushions etc. I shifted them on their way.
They are beneficial but not near my house, thank you!

Ah, hadn't thought of that Call. We had a honeybee in the kitchen yesterday, which I helped out the window with a long feather duster smile

NanTheWiser Sun 12-Apr-20 09:31:42

Yep, as Callistemon says, queens are looking for nest sites. I had a big one in my kitchen yesterday, which got shooed out.

I've got a spider catcher and use it to catch bees and take them outside. Last year we had a lot in the conservatory over a few days, no peace for me as I was jumping up bee catching every few minutes.

According to one tabloid newspaper I wouldn’t wrap my chips in, we are to expect an influx of Asian hornets as they are “heading for the UK”!?. You would not want to try and catch one of those with the little plastic cup and piece of card that is my go to for removing bees and wasps!

I was up in the early hours convinced I could hear buzzing. Many years ago I came home from work to find that we’d a whole colony in the house, so I’m always on red alert!

Bees, that is, not wasps.

Callistemon Sun 12-Apr-20 09:54:32

We had bumbles bees nesting in a roof space just outside the bathroom window so had to keep the window shut in summer a couple of years ago.
However, one day they just flew away and haven't returned since.

Infoman, I agree with you. We have had three huge wasps in the house over the last few days. And I can tell a wasp from a bee - and they were definitely wasps.

I just assumed they were Queen wasps looking for somewhere to nest. They seem to like our house, we have had a number of wasps nests in our roof.

We think the house is now reasonably protected from wasps, squirrels and jackdaws, all of which have taken over roof and chimneys at various times. The problem of living in a very old house.

We have seen some huge ones and DD2 was stung on the hand in bed- she insists it was a hornet but we think it was a large wasp.

Yes i think they are,and a lot more about than usual, i have had 3 in the house and seen a lot flying arond in the garden, seen quite a few bees as well

I must hang up my Waspinator (being allergic) and keep the back door closed. I found a tiny hole in the wall (drilled through for an aerial) where they must have been getting in. (I say 'they' but it could have been the same queen wasp, two days running.)

SueDonim Sun 12-Apr-20 12:34:22

I’ve not seen any wasps but there are bees flying around the size of B52 bombers!

Marmight Sun 12-Apr-20 12:41:42

Yes I have lots. They nest in my roof and porch cavity. I got one in the bathroom last night and got stung for my trouble little b****r

EllanVannin Sun 12-Apr-20 12:49:05

I had an enormous bumble bee inside the other day---the noise out of it was reverberating, he was huge but beautiful so I guided it out with a rolled up newspaper and blow me, he was hovering outside again before ( if it was the same one ) so I had to close the patio door just in case. My word I wouldn't like one of those landing on the end of my nose.

SueDonim Sun 12-Apr-20 13:58:40

There’s just been a giant bee in my 2yo GD’s house. She wants to keep it as a pet! Mummy had to explain it wasn’t a good idea as they can sometimes bite if they’re not able to fly around. ❤️

Buffybee Sun 12-Apr-20 14:22:40

I’ve seen lots of huge Honey Bees all over the Apple Blossom but no wasps at all yet!

25Avalon Sun 12-Apr-20 14:26:40

Yes I've had several wasps in my conservatory and they all seem much bigger than usual also noisy buzzing. This morning I had a giant bee with an orange backside which I carefully caught and released back outside. It made me wonder why are they all coming in?

timetogo2016 Sun 12-Apr-20 14:30:04

Large wasps and bees this year for sure.
And beautifull baby robins with their mom and dad .

Callistemon Sun 12-Apr-20 14:32:30

I don't know why they come in 25Avalon!

I think I put over 20 outside on one day last year. Perhaps it was the same ones coming in again though.

Callistemon Sun 12-Apr-20 14:38:15

Here comes another one - a large noisy wasp. Just when I thought I'd sit down for a while!

Got rid of two yesterday behind the blinds, luckily the window was open. Soon shut it again
