I like

Hi de Hi (sp?).
Outnumbered.
Many documentaries.
Anything about education.

Michael Portillo’s travel programmes.

I dislike

Practically everything else!
Soaps.
Almost all fiction series.
Strictly Come Dancing and similar.
Cookery programmes.
The One Show (can’t switch it off quickly enough after I’ve watched the local news).

There is very little I watch, which really says it all. I do like documentaries, but nowadays they use such airhead presenters (make and female) who prance a lot, have there mouths wide open all the time, and act as if they are total idiots.

I really enjoy that programme about factories and what they make. This week it was the Le Creuset factory, but Greg Wallace, going round the factory with an urbane and courteous French manager while he behaved like a monkey on a string, was cringingly embarrassing.

The programme was fascinating and when Ruth Goodman showed how cast iron pots were used and how to make a Lancashire hot pot. to hear an adult presenter talk like one and assume her audience was adult as well was so pleasant, Why not sack Wallace and give her the job?

Anybody Famous for being famous such as Gemma Collins, Sam and Billy Faiers, absolutely nothing to say and they keep on saying it. All those bullies on Real Housewives of......shows.

Eloethan Thu 16-Apr-20 20:13:38

Sometimes "dumbed down", as referred to here, is OK. For instance, Strictly Come Dancing isn't meant to be an intellectual exercise. It's purely entertainment. I am a little bored with it now, after so many years of more or less the same format, but people still enjoy it.

I expect most people watch a variety of stuff, including documentaries and more serious programmes but, in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with lightening the mood occasionally, especially in times like these.

GabriellaG54 Thu 16-Apr-20 20:06:16

Agree with much of what Terribull days in her post on the subject including (but not limited to) the presenters and voices.

GabriellaG54 Thu 16-Apr-20 20:02:51

Greg Wallace, esp on those factory programmes. Gawd knows how his wives have put up with him...well, 2 got rid but the third?
Still there...is she?
He repeats everything the other person says.
"The flour gets mixed in with the fruit"
G: "Gets mixed with the fruit?"
Give me strength...??

Missfoodlove Thu 16-Apr-20 18:52:44

We watch so little as everything is dumbed down, I think I am the only person in the world not to have seen Strictly!
Mrs Browns boys though.......who could find that funny?
I’m Irish and not a fan!

Fleabag - awful character

TerriBull Wed 15-Apr-20 18:13:12

Lucca do agree about Mel and Sue, so glad they're no longer on Bake Off, they reinforce that myth that women can't be funny, when we all know that's not true. A very weak duo imo, too reliant on corny innuendo. Whilst French and Saunders missed the mark sometimes, who doesn't, at their best they were very funny and I like them both individually.

I don't watch shows such as TOWIE, but it annoys me intensely how non entities now carve out a living earning considerable amounts of money having no talent whatsoever. Can't help thinking the tentacles from the US Kardashian rubbish have spread far and wide with this sort of tv. Unfortunately I think it has a pernicious effect on some younger and more gullible followers in the manufactured looks they aspire to, the gratuitous pursuit of wealth and the fact that the participants in such shows seem to do very little to attain their lifestyles.

Killing Eve made a groundbreaking debut then somehow didn't follow that through with the 2nd series. Clearly dependent on Phoebe Waller Bridge's writing. Interesting to see whether the 3rd series falls somewhere between the brilliance of the first and the disappointment of the 2nd.

Really prefer not to watch any of the following presenters: Holly Willoughby, Tess Daley, Philip Schofield, Scarlett Moffitt,Jonathan Ross, Gary Lineker. Also these 3 because their voices really grate: Nick Knowles, Stacey Dooley, Gregg Wallace.

I don't dislike Strictly, just think it's getting a bit tired, but every so often they get the brilliant contestant that hooks you in.

Anything where men are doing stupid things in cars yawn!

Billybob4491 Wed 15-Apr-20 16:50:21

Might be easier to say what I do like to watch:

Dads army
Hi di Hi
Fools and Horses
On the buses

I'm just an old fashioned girl at heart.

AGAA4 Wed 15-Apr-20 16:37:54

Glad some others dislike Strictly. Don't like game shows.

Curlywhirly Wed 15-Apr-20 16:04:25

Any American sitcom, except Friends, which I still love.
Any reality show, except Housewives of Cheshire, which is so utterly cringeworthy and false, I have to watch it!
Soaps, except Corrie, which is now dreadful, but can't seem to stop watching it.
Peaky Blinders and any other very violent programmes.
Can't bear Amanda Holden, she may be very nice in real life, but her TV persona is awful. Same with Lulu, she just comes across as false, but again may be lovely a person.
Any actor/actress who is known for being unreasonable/a diva - puts me right off them.
Don't like watching popular female singers who dance and dress like lap dancers and are overtly sexual, it's just so tacky. Wish they would just keep to singing (although I am sure my sons wouldn't agree!).
I know I am in the minority, but really can't appreciate game shows.

BBbevan Wed 15-Apr-20 15:38:03

Dislike any American sitcoms, Anything with Celebrity in the title. I haven’t watched a British soap since Pauline hit her husband with the frying pan.
Usually stick to BBC 1,2 and 4. Although we have recently discovered YouTube.

oldgimmer1 Wed 15-Apr-20 14:24:19

I cannot abide Gogglebox. I do not find it remotely funny.

Yet I find most things funny to some extent - even Mrs Brown's Boys (which most people seem to detest).

EllanVannin Wed 15-Apr-20 14:15:06

I only like documentaries and the odd play. I'm fast losing interest in television.

eazybee Wed 15-Apr-20 14:12:01

Killing Eve
Fleabag
anything with either of the Mabuse sisters in, regrettably now including Strictly
Pointless
Most of the BBC News
Mrs. Brown's Boys

MiniMoon Wed 15-Apr-20 14:03:09

I cant be doing with "the soaps", I don't watch any of them.
Ant and Dec
Gregg Wallace and Jonathon Ross have voiced that grate on my ears.
Any hospital dramas.

I'm really liking Your Home Made Perfect.
And I too am looking forward to Sewing Bee, much better than Bake Off.

Lucca Wed 15-Apr-20 14:01:16

Ok true confession time. I watch Corrie.
I should point out that I watch rubbish quite cheerfully but I can’t bear “cheesy “
Another pet hate...I watched half an episode of Vera then couldn’t bear her fake Geordie accent a minute longer..
My son loves Grand designs, but I find it nauseating like when they talk about a building maintaining its integrity.

grannysyb Wed 15-Apr-20 13:55:20

Cant bear Greg Wallace, know as " geezer" in our house, we won't watch anything with him in. Also Jonathan Ross, Jeremy Clarkson, a bunch of big heads. Really looking forward to the Great British Sewing Bee!

SalsaQueen Wed 15-Apr-20 13:46:10

All reality shows (I'm a Celebrity, Strictly, Made in Essex, etc)
Mrs Brown's Boys - dire.
Casualty - where the actors are paid more than real-life nhs workers.
Any period drama.
All soaps.
Cookery programmes - too many of them.

I watch very few programmes, but I do like the wildlife/animal ones.

Artdecogran Wed 15-Apr-20 13:23:32

Luca, love the thread so much coming back for seconds. Love Father Brown, wish they would make more instead of giving us 2 weeks worth at a time. Used to like Midsomer Murders but not now. You never know whether you’re getting the latest or a repeat.

Lucca Wed 15-Apr-20 12:11:35

Sodapop, that’s the idea of this thread , thought it might be fun to get a dispute going that didn’t involve politics!

sodapop Wed 15-Apr-20 12:04:35

To go against the flow, I watch Corrie, Emmerdale and Enders. I like medical and crime dramas. I also like wild life programmes.
I dislike reality shows, Greg Wallace and Tim Wonnacott.
