Just a heads up if your waiting for the post to arrive this Saturday morning for the forseeable future

kittylester Wed 29-Apr-20 08:06:27

That will be one less days junk nail then. We rarely get post of any significance now!

kittylester Wed 29-Apr-20 08:39:08

My pesky phone mail not nail!!

Lollin Wed 29-Apr-20 08:49:24

Shame more running down of a service. Unless this is just during the current situation.

It is only temporary like many things for the “foreseeable future” and hardly surprising.
Delivery giant Royal Mail has said it will “temporarily” stop the deliveries of letters on Saturdays.
It said it will continue to provide its letter delivery service from Monday to Friday as normal and said customers “should continue to post both letters and parcels as usual on Saturday Royal Mail will continue to collect all mail from businesses, post offices and post boxes”, it said.

Deliveries will be halted from this weekend (Saturday, May 2).

Royal Mail says it is doing this to reduce strain on workers . Union rep says they are afraid it will mean job losses so don’t really know what to think about it. Not a lot of inconvenience for most of us I guess

FarNorth Wed 29-Apr-20 09:35:57

I have thought they should deliver only on Mon, Wed and Fri at the moment.
Maybe that would mean too much mail building up, tho.

It’s not that long ago that a member (can’t remember who) was berating us for “adding to the risks and dangers” posties face by sending birthday cards or letters to our grandchildren. Also letters to care homes.
Cutting back on services is happening everywhere - refuse collections, garden waste among them.
I think it is a knee-jerk reaction to say it will mean job losses and am sure the same Union rep would be among the first to speak up for the protection of his members.
People need to get used to the idea of a “new normal” even when normality returns- if it ever dies.

Grannybags Wed 29-Apr-20 09:38:21

Oh no! That's my son's birthday. No cards for him then

gillybob Wed 29-Apr-20 09:38:25

I have the most lovely friendly postman . He is always cheerful and upbeat . I think it’s a good thing that they are cutting down on deliveries. Can you remember when there used to be 2 a day ? I don’t think many of us really need a post at the weekend anyway.

MawB Wed 29-Apr-20 09:38:38

“Does” not “dies”! ?????

gillybob Wed 29-Apr-20 09:39:04

Meant to add I never get anything nice in the list anyway . Just bills and hospital appointments . Will be nice to have a whole weekend off from those.

PS AIBU to dislike shouty capitals in a thread title?
It does shout out at me!

Gransing Wed 29-Apr-20 09:52:24

Our garden refuse has now started again. Hurrah.

Lindaloulabel Wed 29-Apr-20 09:52:56

My daughter and son in law are both posties and say this has been coming for a while....
Not to help them but cut staff and wages.
It’s been done now as the bosses know that the posties won’t take action against it because of covid situation.
They’ve also been told no share dividend or bonus this year as RM losing money yet everyday is like at Christmas and workload so heavy.
Don’t get me or them wrong they both love the job and know they are appreciated by the general public (mostly).

annodomini Wed 29-Apr-20 10:00:35

My postie is great. Meaningful letters are few and far between, but inevitably I have been using mail order more than usual and he cheerfully leaves my packages on the back doorstep as requested and gives me a wave through the window. Two posties have been doing the work of three around here and I'm sure it is the same in most areas.

Teetime Wed 29-Apr-20 10:06:00

Does that include parcel deliveries?

LeeN137 Wed 29-Apr-20 10:13:49

I'm a little confused - they say it's to 'ease the load', but the Saturday post will still have to be delivered, most probably on the Monday, increasing the load on posties then...

gillybob Wed 29-Apr-20 10:15:55

My postie really cheers me up .

Before CV If he saw my car at the door he would rattle the knocker so we can have a little chat. I miss that these days. He knows that I will take parcels in for anyone too. I once asked him to get rid of anything in a brown envelope and not to post it through my door thank you very much and now it’s a standing joke..... “I put all your mail through number 25...miserable so and so........so here I brought you number 18’s which looks so much nicer” grin

Susan56 Wed 29-Apr-20 10:20:30

We don’t have a regular postie but my mum does and he is lovely. He always looks in and waves to her and will take any letters she wants posting. We are so grateful to him as we live 50 miles from her so gives us peace of mind to know he is checking on her.

MawB Wed 29-Apr-20 10:20:53

I think “load” refers to workload , (ie number of deliveries etc) not the weight of the bag Lee137 grin
Most of the posties I see have a trolley anyway.

Oopsminty Wed 29-Apr-20 10:22:33

We're not getting post on a daily basis here at the moment

Which is fine

They're doing a good job keeping going.

Chardy Wed 29-Apr-20 10:23:59

Anyone else remember 2 deliveries a day? Sunday afternoon post box collections?
Now Saturday postbox collections 7am! Weekdays 9am!

Lollin Wed 29-Apr-20 10:29:30

grin posties aren't /have never been just post deliverers. Of course there are always the exceptions in any business but I miss our posties and can't ask after the regulars at present who haven't been around.

jacalpad Wed 29-Apr-20 10:30:29

@Teetime parcel deliveries will continue on a Saturday as normal.
