Chilly!

I did get up very early, but the temp on the thermometer outside the kitchen window read 3.4, and the min. during the night was 2.9. And we’re in SW London.

I have my sheepskin house boots on - a far cry from a week or so ago when I was in flip flops first thing.
I’m sure many of you further north are considerably chillier, though.

Very cold here in the NW last night with the heating on from teatime to bedtime. I'm quite near the sea so you can feel the cold blasts more so.

It rarely gets as hot here as it does Southwards at the best of times and to my mind there aren't the hot summers as once were many years ago with the atmosphere still retaining that " coolness "----unless it's more noticeable since I've got older, smile I don't know.

When you go abroad, the warm air is evident,,, it never is in my part of the world as I never seem to be without a jumper.
I don't know about global warminggrin. Winters here are more like the Ice Age.

Cold and windy in the South yesterday and Sunday. " N'er cast a clout 'til may is out" as they say.

However it's in full bloom down here so that's an old wives take obviously.

Still managed to have our now routine bbq lunch on the patio in long trousers and T-shirt rather than bikini top and shorts.

I’m in sunny Scotland and today’s looking much the same.?

Bellasnana Tue 12-May-20 08:13:04

As much as I love the land of my birth, this is the main reason I could not return to live there.

After nearly 40 years living in Malta, I love the weather and being pretty sure of seeing the sunshine for a good part of the year. I find it is much easier to be cheerful when the days are sunny.☀️

sodapop Tue 12-May-20 08:29:19

Sunny but very cold here in SW France as well. The wind is almost icy.

Witzend Tue 12-May-20 10:03:36

It is at least sunny here now.

I should have known the temp. was going to plummet - the other day I not only ordered myself some nice new flip flops from Joules, I also had some sent to a dd.
Sod’s law innit?

GabriellaG54 Tue 12-May-20 10:07:00

Yeah...but they frown on divorce ( yes, I know it's allowed now) and have other IMV, backward practices.

I know a guy who, for months, told me he was single and I wondered why at 39, he had never been married.
After several awkward conversations where I felt he was not telling the truth, he 'confessed' that he was divorced (this was 2014) but it was considered a stigma in his wider family.
I found that unbelievable but it was true. ???

confusedconfused ???

Puzzler61 Tue 12-May-20 10:10:21

When you get your new flip flops, whack your heating up Witzend , just for the day, and enjoy wearing them indoors ?

Puzzler61 Tue 12-May-20 10:12:47

Oops * Gabriella54* , I think you’ve jumped threads? ?

Witzend Tue 12-May-20 10:16:02

They’ve arrived - I did wear them for one day before the freeze, Puzzler61.
DD’s will only be arriving today, though unlike her mother she’s always boiling hot so will probably wear them anyway.

EllanVannin Tue 12-May-20 10:19:30

Bellasnana, I don't blame you one bit. If I had the choice I too would rather live somewhere warm throughout the year. I just can't tolerate the cold at any price as it affects my health and well-being.
I'm perfectly fit and spritely when abroad until I reach these shores and I'm an entirely different person.

CassieJ Tue 12-May-20 10:21:13

Very cold here first thing, even had a frost. Complete contrast to last Saturday when it was 24c!

Toadinthehole Tue 12-May-20 10:22:06

What thread are you on Gabriella? Sounds interesting!!

Toadinthehole Tue 12-May-20 10:23:43

Yes...heating back on here, Southeast. 23 degrees on Saturday, 8 today! Completely mad!?

MiniMoon Tue 12-May-20 11:37:13

My husband goes to work very early in the morning. Yesterday he drove to work through the snow!!
It was cold enough this morning for my heating to come on, and it is turned down to 15°.

MiniMoon Tue 12-May-20 11:39:24

By the way, we live in Northumberland.

Roses Tue 12-May-20 11:52:28

On Thursday my boiler in the loft burst so no heating or hot water since then. This was just in time for the cold snap, been washing in a bowl of warm water inside the shower cubicle and sitting under blankets to watch tv.
It's now being fixed and I can't wait for a hot shower

Tabbycat Tue 12-May-20 12:01:54

Cold and cloudy here in North Yorkshire, but it was lovely last week - 21C and sunny in our back courtyard, so we ate lunch outside three days running?*!!?

felice Tue 12-May-20 12:04:45

Cold here this week, heating back on, unfortunately DGS and his Dog are running in and out from the garden all the time so not really heating up.
Roasted pepper and Tomato Soup and a Sandwich Americain for lunch then a decent walk this afternoon.
Hope it warms up again soon, stay safe.

Tabbycat Tue 12-May-20 12:07:38

LullyDully - N'er cast a clout 'til May is out - I thought that was the month rather than the flower? When I was still working as a teacher I would wait until after half-term (usually the last week in May) before the summer clothes and sandals came out.

dustyangel Tue 12-May-20 12:17:08

Clouts have been shed here in the Algarve but in the last couple of days are rapidly going back on. I’ve just come in from hanging more washing out as rain is forecast for the rest of the week, my fingers have gone numb and I’m freezing! I’m wearing socks, long jeans, a short sleeve polo style shirt and a cardigan.

sodapop Tue 12-May-20 12:22:28

No I think the saying refers to May blossom not the month Tabbycat

felice Tue 12-May-20 12:35:32

We used to live in the Algarve dustyangel, it can get very chilly and very wet, lots of complaining tourists, we ended up putting up a map in our bar because some people just did not understand that we were not on the Med.
Swore black was white, I despaired of school Geography at times.
