jk rowling and the 3 dementors

Ive been following the JK Rowling news items with interest. Apparently she responded by tweet to an article earlier in the week that spoke of people who menstruate. JK made a flippant as in “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud? “.

There was an immediate twitter backlash with some vile threats and comments. The twitter storm continues and Rowling felt the need to offer a full explanation of her point of view.

Interestingly, three actors who owe their very careers to JK Rowling did not support her. In fact their comments fanned the flames of public outrage. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

We can not all agree with everyone but for those three young actors, who without the exposure that the Harry Potter movies gave them may still be struggling for fame and fortune, could they not have chosen to keep quiet on this occasion. They didn't have to wade in with any comments at all.

What are those of us who no longer menstruate going to be called? confused

Callistemon Sat 13-Jun-20 14:53:47

The three of them are virtue signallers and, yes, were it not for Joanne Rowling, no-one would ever have heard of them. She has the talent, they are just performers.

No-one is allowed to express an opinion these days without the Right-On Brigade expressing disapproval just to show how perfect and pc they are.

It doesn't take much to upset some people ( rolls eyes )

EllanVannin Sat 13-Jun-20 15:26:37

Rosalyn, I'm afraid I'm not bothered about the opinions of others any more. This is how this lunacy gets you.

Wheniwasyourage Sat 13-Jun-20 15:36:41

Like you, merlotgran, I found myself wondering what I am now. I had been thinking that I was a woman, but obviously not. Good for JKR!

merlotgran Sat 13-Jun-20 15:37:57

petunia, Is that pronounced Haver - as in 'Got one!' or does it mean you're one of Nigel's distant cousins?

merlotgran Sat 13-Jun-20 15:39:13

What about those of us who don't have a womb or a cervix?

petunia Sat 13-Jun-20 15:42:04

merlot gran-haver as in got one. but if you havent got a cervix or womb, clearly you are a non man

Galaxy Sat 13-Jun-20 15:44:01

It's just lots of angry men threatening a woman. It's horrible and I think she is very brave, its handy to note who the misogynists are though.

merlotgran Sat 13-Jun-20 15:45:48

So the fact that I haven't got a willie doesn't come into it? grin

Alexa Sat 13-Jun-20 15:48:49

I agree with Rowling people who are born as women should have intimate spaces like lavatories and hospital rooms reserved for the and freed of physiological men.

'Born as women' and 'physiologically' are unfortunately blunt criteria but they are the best we have. Smaller and less muscular people must be protected from potential predators and bullies.

petunia Sat 13-Jun-20 15:48:51

having a willie is neither here not there. if a bloke says hes a woman, hes a woman. simples

What about those of us who don't have a womb or a cervix?

You will have to invent a word Merlot but I like the word
Pixillated ( but only because it sounds like a pixie.)?

suziewoozie Sat 13-Jun-20 15:51:12

The fundamental issue is the desire to deny the biological reality of sex as a determinant of what it is to be a woman. One we allow that, we drive a coach and horses through women’s rights.

petunia Sat 13-Jun-20 15:54:45

exactly suziewoozie. i fear we are sleep walking into that situation. i applaud JK rowling for standing up to be counted.

lemongrove Sat 13-Jun-20 15:55:59

Good for JKR I say, and as for the young actors so eager to put their views ( even when not needed) I think the problem is these days, that if you are a ‘celeb’ and you don’t immediately come out with something, social media howls with rage that you haven’t commented, therefore you must be a racist/ homophobe/ trans-hater. It’s a stupid and very unpleasant aspect of forums and causes real harm to people and their careers.

Loislovesstewie Sat 13-Jun-20 16:12:07

suziewoozie , exactly. If any man wants to take hormones and modify his body then that is fine by me. But biologically they are still male, and always will be. I have no objection to saying trans-woman but not woman to describe them. Furthermore I , along with many other biological women ( or women ) have been sexually assaulted. I do not want to be in a safe space. e.g changing room etc and not know if the person trying on clothes next to me is biologically a male. And , sorry to bang on about my previous employment again , but I did have many clients who were sex offenders and honestly they were without doubt the most devious, conniving people I had ever met. Quite capable of exploiting any situation. For my safety I wasn't allowed to be alone with some of them when I interviewed them.So why ever would I want to undress in front of them?
And believe me , I think some of them would be quite capable of saying they were trans to get into a changing room.
If we all had lockable, individual, completely enclosed changing rooms ,fine . But that is not going to happen

On another note, I could scream when another privileged man tells ME what to think . It's about time they shut up.
Sorry for the rant.

ladymuck Sat 13-Jun-20 16:13:25

Why can't people just stick to what they are known for and stop voicing their opinions in public. She must have known what the reaction would be.
For what it's worth, I think she's right. Cutting off the genitals and wearing womens clothing does not turn a man into a woman. You remain biologically the gender you are born.

Galaxy Sat 13-Jun-20 16:17:06

She has fought for womens rights all her life, I am so grateful she spoke up, in the same way I was grateful for martina navratilovas contribution to the debate, of course she knew what would happen and she did it anyway, she is very brave.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 13-Jun-20 16:27:48

Here Here JK Rowling ?

Oopsminty Sat 13-Jun-20 16:39:23

If I was famous I'd be giving FB, Instagram, Twitter etc etc, a wide berth

What's the point?

Especially when you can end up in loads of trouble

Trump would be advised to stay away as well.

Tweeting is something to be avoided

All that happens is you upset a couple of people which turns into hundreds and thousands and maybe the only mistake you made was by saying you didn't like curry.

Some 'comedian' made a daft comment at Priti Patel which saw her lambasted by the kind tolerant left. She was referred to as a coconut.

Some people think the term ‘coconut’ is brazenly racist.

People seem to be reverting back to childhood with their own gangs bullying another.
