Changing the duvet cover

I have always struggled to change the cover on my duvet. Often leaving me in a bath of sweat, especially in this hot weather. Chatting to my sister the other day she happened to mention that she'd heard a tip (or hack as they're called now) on This Morning whereby once you get the corners of the duvet into the cover you attach pegs to hold them in place. Works an absolute treat!

It’s so easy if you turn the cover inside out, arms inside, catch hold of the two corners Of the duvet and shake it down Takes one minute at most and works well for single or double never have any problems always done it that way

I turn the duvet cover inside out. Put the duvet well into the corners, hang on tightly and shake vigorously. I can usually get enough inside to be able to let go and put the bottom bit in.
Good tip about the pegs. I'll try it next time and see.

That's how I do it Bluebelle and MiniMoon

Don't use a duvet cover, I bought a pretty patterned duvet from M&S last year which I use with an under sheet.

Similar method to Bluebell
As shown decades ago on That's Life with Ester Rantzen grin

I use an under-sheet with the duvet which means I don’t have to wrestle with the duvet very often. I use the peg method too but it’s king size and I am not.

I use a top sheet so the duvet cover doesn’t need washing so often. I can’t do the corner thing now because I bought a super-king sized quilt and I’d need arms like an orangutan to be able to hold each corner. grin

I bought some giant peg things from Dunelm which help with changing the cover. www.dunelm.com/product/quilt-clips-1000017856

I think we both do the same Sue. Maybe my sheet is a top and not an under sheet, but it’s on top of me and under the duvet. I have the giant pegs too. It works a treat.

Have just hung out the bedding and the thunder is starting...
Will have to get it in as it will be raining all day (SEast). At least I didn’t wash the duvet cover too...every cloud and all that.

Hi grannyrebel17 ! I have been using the peg method for years, it makes it so easy. I have found if you also peg 2 or 3 times along the top edge it all falls into place in a couple of shakes.

SueDonim Wed 17-Jun-20 12:35:05

Ha, yes, Silverlining - it’s a top sheet that goes under the duvet! grin

grannyrebel7 Wed 17-Jun-20 12:39:35

Must get some of those giant pegs and peg all the way across. Thanks ladies smile

I’ve used the peg idea for years and since the time when DH was poorly have used a top sheet under duvet cover.

etheltbags1 Wed 17-Jun-20 12:52:00

Pegs fall off for me

Gransooz Wed 17-Jun-20 12:52:55

DH and I have stayed in places where there is a top sheet under the duvet. However he throws the covers off and on so often during the night that the sheet ends up crumpled somewhere in the middle of the bed and the duvet is on top on its own! Hence I wouldn't use a top sheet - it’s pointless. I just wash the lot when changing the bed. DH offers to help putting everything back on but so far I prefer to do it on my own. Maybe some day I’ll need his help but right now his efforts especially with the pillowcases leave a lot to be desired. ?

I struggled for ages with changing the cover until I found this method.

the other thing I did was sew tapes at the top - each side and middle - of the case and the duvet and tie them so that the duvet does not slip down in the cover over time. Could also do this on the sides and hold it both ways.

SueDonim Wed 17-Jun-20 13:28:05

I’ve tried that rolling up method but I didn’t find it any easier.

FarNorth Wed 17-Jun-20 13:37:30

I like the rolling up method for a double quilt. Not any quicker, but it is easier.

Despite having the middle press-stud fastened, the last time I washed a single cover my machine still managed to turn it inside out.
Maybe it's trying to be helpful.

I really can’t see how the patterned duvet would work with no cover.

You would have to take the duvet to the dry cleaners every week or so !

I have a top sheet as well as a bottom one which are washed weekly.
This means the duvet cover doesn’t need changing quite so often.

annodomini Wed 17-Jun-20 14:22:12

Having a patterned duvet on top of a sheet would be rather like the eiderdowns we used to have on our beds before the 1970s. I tried having a sheet under the duvet, but missed the 'snuggling' feeling my duvet gives me without a sheet coming between it and me.

MissAdventure Wed 17-Jun-20 14:28:23

I have terrible trouble changing the duvet cover.
I do the inside out method, but I spend ages trying to shake it into shape.
I need a lie down by the time I've done it.

Wheniwasyourage Wed 17-Jun-20 14:29:04

I wash and store duvet covers inside out. Then I put them on as BlueBelle describes, and that means that the odd socks which find their way inside the covers, even if you close them for washing, are eventually discovered. It works for me.

Changing a super king duvet cover requires a coffee break halfway through?. Shaking or flinging any of it about is out with my abilities, then there is a fitted sheet to go snuggly under the mattress ? I also use flat sheets too as I prefer white bed linen. My own worst enemy!

The peg idea sounds good so I will give it a try?

SueDonim Wed 17-Jun-20 14:53:28

grin Kalu! Maybe something more fortifying than coffee is required. wine
