Years ago friends and I formed a PROTECT THE ZED SOCIETY (didn't mean all the caps btw, they just happened!..)
but, yes, that replacement 'S' is slowly overtaking and auto-fill always uses the 'S'. Like dog fleas in the carpet, you have to be very aware and stamp on them whenever they appear where you don't want them.Take back control!

Unless you’re using an American computer, which will force you to spell ‘surprise‘ ‘realise’ etc with a zed.
It’s interesting that we’re so often subject to rants on here about how American English is taking over proper, English English, but America often retains usage and spelling that we have discarded.
There’s even an island in Chesapeake Bay (Tangier Island) where the inhabitants speak with an accent/dialect that is said to be the closest thing to English as it was spoken in Shakespeare’s time.

"Soz" (for "sorry") is accepted by the online word game I play. It also accepts American And British spellings which is very useful!

My sister uses "soz" and "tomoz" when texting. She is, of course, also over 60.

A lovely lady I met on holiday years ago had been a BOAC stewardess way back. Like many (if not all) the air stewardesses were very well brought up middle class girls with charming manners. On possibly her first transatlantic flight an American passenger asked her to direct him to the “rest room”.
Not understanding what he meant, but kindly assuming he might want a lie-down she replied that she didn’t think the plane had one, but could she offer him a pillow instead!

I don't get why texts aren't spelt properly when once I've keyed in a few letters the word comes up anyway. It's not like you are saving time

Still on the school thread (sorry zedders), may I add the media fondness for 'back to class', 'in class' instead of 'back to school' etc.
I never hear anyone actually say 'in class', unless they're already in the school of course, and certainly not 'back to class'.

watermeadow strangely I woke up today with a thought about the education in the UK and how it has slumped in league tables. My solution is to look at what goes on in the countries top of the league and just adopt their system. Also the University table shows UK to be floundering with best in the world being MIT - American, no doubt it will be filled with professors, researchers etc from around the world but at least it does attracts the very best to work there.
