Is this a national uprising against the lack of Zeds in our language or just a thing in my family or just my family.

Yesterday my favorite middle granddaughter (I've only got three GDs) texted that she would face time me,"Tomoz".

My son, who is in his 50's keeps saying, "Zos", when he sends me a text to say sorry for not keeping up.

Does anyone else get this?

Ignore the extras.

Years ago friends and I formed a PROTECT THE ZED SOCIETY (didn't mean all the caps btw, they just happened!..)
but, yes, that replacement 'S' is slowly overtaking and auto-fill always uses the 'S'. Like dog fleas in the carpet, you have to be very aware and stamp on them whenever they appear where you don't want them.Take back control!grin

Unless you’re using an American computer, which will force you to spell ‘surprise‘ ‘realise’ etc with a zed.
It’s interesting that we’re so often subject to rants on here about how American English is taking over proper, English English, but America often retains usage and spelling that we have discarded.
There’s even an island in Chesapeake Bay (Tangier Island) where the inhabitants speak with an accent/dialect that is said to be the closest thing to English as it was spoken in Shakespeare’s time.

Cherish the zed because soon it will be zee.
Schools are already full of Students (even the 4 year olds) under a Principal. The toilets have been renamed Bathrooms (even though no baths) They take Quizzes, not tests, and hope for Straight As in the US- style SATS.
Baseball will replace football.
As the US education system is universally held to be very poor why is our government so keen to follow them?

FarNorth Wed 24-Jun-20 16:13:51

Our government are a bunch of idiots, that's why they do stupid things including rushing into Brexit.

Baboom! Do I get a prize for being first to mention brexit on a non-brexit thread?

watermeadow I share your anxiety.

I do not want to be 'gifted' or 'tasked' or have to do 'math'- I suppose someone is now going to say how old fashioned and narrow minded I am. grin

No Zs in Wales

FarNorth Thu 25-Jun-20 01:40:19

Nor in Scottish Gaelic.

boat Thu 25-Jun-20 03:25:27

Thanks FarNorth. I never knew that.

Is Irish Gaelic the same?

JackyB Thu 25-Jun-20 06:33:24

"Soz" (for "sorry") is accepted by the online word game I play. It also accepts American And British spellings which is very useful!

My sister uses "soz" and "tomoz" when texting. She is, of course, also over 60.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Jun-20 07:00:31

I text ‘tomo’ - no zed!

Furret Thu 25-Jun-20 07:07:10

MawB indeed. I always manage to nod off then!

Witzend Thu 25-Jun-20 08:48:48

Baseball was probably here before it was taken across the pond.
In Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen mentions her heroine Catherine enjoying ‘boys’ plays’ such as ‘base ball’. (two words)

I wonder when it turned into rounders, as it evidently did?

On the subject of bathrooms
A lovely lady I met on holiday years ago had been a BOAC stewardess way back. Like many (if not all) the air stewardesses were very well brought up middle class girls with charming manners. On possibly her first transatlantic flight an American passenger asked her to direct him to the “rest room”.
Not understanding what he meant, but kindly assuming he might want a lie-down she replied that she didn’t think the plane had one, but could she offer him a pillow instead! gringringrin

Carol54 Thu 25-Jun-20 09:51:26

I don't get why texts aren't spelt properly when once I've keyed in a few letters the word comes up anyway. It's not like you are saving time

winterwhite Thu 25-Jun-20 10:18:31

Still on the school thread (sorry zedders), may I add the media fondness for 'back to class', 'in class' instead of 'back to school' etc.
I never hear anyone actually say 'in class', unless they're already in the school of course, and certainly not 'back to class'.

Mollygo Thu 25-Jun-20 10:34:05

As long as I understand, I let it go coz I really don’t mind.??

henetha Thu 25-Jun-20 10:53:19

I'm often known in the family as Neenz.... I quite like it.

watermeadow strangely I woke up today with a thought about the education in the UK and how it has slumped in league tables. My solution is to look at what goes on in the countries top of the league and just adopt their system. Also the University table shows UK to be floundering with best in the world being MIT - American, no doubt it will be filled with professors, researchers etc from around the world but at least it does attracts the very best to work there.

annodomini Thu 25-Jun-20 11:16:03

In King Lear, Act II scene 2, one of a series of insults is:
thou whoreson zed, thou unnecessary letter.
Was Shakespeare trying to get rid of Z?
