My Peculiar Home Habits

I think I must have spent too long by myself in lockdown because I am starting to notice things like I have a favourite hob (bottom left), double light switches have to be facing the same way and I really don't like towels overlapping each other on the rail!

Is it just me? Surely I can’t be the only one with these strange idiosyncrasies? ?

I'm group A too... Not great news re Covid apparently

Bottom right hob here. I cant stand the switches to bein the wron position, the one at the bottom of the stairs in my old house had to have the bottom part sticking out, this meant many trips up and down the stairs over the years to sort it. Pegs have to match by colour on each item on the washing line, pillowcases have to be hung on the line in the order of patterned plain patterned plain. The list is long.grin

I feel guilty not using my beautiful China.

MissAdventure Tue 30-Jun-20 19:20:00

Ah, why not use it? smile

The alarm clock always has to be set to something with an 8 in it, so 7.08, 7.18, 7.28 etc etc. If I want to be up for 8am I always set 7.58. All garments on the line have to have the same colour pegs. Cannot leave the house without checking the back door, the iron and the coffee pot twice. Unfortunately with the front door I have to check at least three times. I try and wean myself off this habit by checking twice and leaping into the car, but invariably have to stop before swinging out of the drive, climb out and re-check the door. It always induces sighs of exasperation and much eye rolling from the rest of the family.

Do you (does one, really) have to make a conscious effort to keep these rituals in check?
Will you find more bits to add on to what has to be done?

I spend my days checking my food cupboards, after my DH has been in them. I have to keep everything in straight lines with the labels facing the front. Hubby just puts things away it gets put back, labels facing backwards or sideways sometimes he even mixes sweet and savoury items together. It drives me mad, all i want is to see my cupboards neat, tidy and organised. Same goes with my fridge and freezer, everything has to be just right and like with like. DH thinks i am too fussy, i like organisation.

I’m A+ too and peg the washing out in order largest to smallest. I also like CD’s in alphabetical order just so they are easier to find. Once cleaned my youngest son’s room and did this to his CD collection - I just couldn’t help myself and he said he couldn’t find the ones he wanted!

I watched an episode of 'Would I lie to You' a while ago, one of the guests claimed to howl like a dog when he locked the door so that he would remember that he'd done it. I tried it for a while but howling the third time of checking just makes me look ridiculous.

Strange about blood type A isn’t it, is there anyone on here who is a different one?

Chewbacca Tue 30-Jun-20 21:56:17

The only thing I'm a bit pernickety about is if I find just one sock when I empty the washing machine, I can't let that out on its own; it has to stay in the washing machine until it's mate turns up, it can take several washes sometime before they do!

Jumblygran Tue 30-Jun-20 22:15:08

I am messy as anything my DH and DD straighten things up after me.
We all three have a favourite hob on the back right.
When I am outdoors I do talk to the bees other insects too and birds. But the bees are so important I think we need to be especially polite to them!

Grannyscotland Tue 30-Jun-20 22:32:24

This is my very first post though feel I know many of you as I’ve been a ‘silent reader’ for a while! I loved the post and that I’m not alone in my wee idiosyncrasies- I make sure every tea towel gets a turn, I have a favourite teaspoon for my morning yoghurt and definitively have a favourite ring on the job!

marpau Tue 30-Jun-20 22:42:37

I belong to a knitting group and have to finish one item at a time and fully complete it before starting another. I get really uncomfortable when others have 2 or 3 projects on the go or have large piles of items waiting to be sewn up or buttons added!

BoBo53 Tue 30-Jun-20 22:44:49

Hello Grannyscotland welcome I’m quite new too!

annep1 Tue 30-Jun-20 23:34:38

This thread is so funny. I think everyone has a degree of OCD. Its very comforting to know.
I do the jiggle handles thing too and hangers in same direction.
I check the upstairs taps when I go out. A neighbours house flooded 30 years ago from tap left on upstairs.

I think taking photos is a great idea!

My blood group is B+ and I am as bad as the rest as you!

Jane10 Wed 01-Jul-20 08:24:48

I'm AB+. Not sure what that makes me. Just a bit odd I suppose.

jocork Wed 01-Jul-20 08:52:35

Well I have plenty of idiosyncracies and I'm not type A blood - I'm O+. I used to do the pegging thing. When we were a family of 4 we all had our own colour of peg and then there were white ones for anything non-personal like T towels. Positions of mugs on the rack is very important and I definitely favour the front right burner on the hob. Now there's just me it's a whole lot easier - no-one to mess up my systems, load the dishwasher wrong or put things away in the wrong place! I don't do checking things much though except if I'm going away. On more than one occasion I've come into the kitchen and found the front right burner still alight having been on low all night! The cooker even has a glass lid which cuts off the gas if you close it but I often don't lower it as I may leave used pans on the top if the sink is full! blush

TerriBull Wed 01-Jul-20 09:32:33

I've always check our front door by leaning on it a couple of times, but that's because I went out once and left it slightly open, hence my paranoia ever since. I also have mad moments just before we're off for a day out, driving my husband mad, getting out of the car and rushing upstairs (2 flights in our house) to see if I've unplugged my heated hairbrush, inevitably I have, but ……..well gotta check one more time! My husband's thing is to get out of the car and then halfway down the road say "did I lock it?"

My home habit since the lockdown has been to use my late mother in law's fine bone china tea cups out, I have several sets of her china which only get used when we have visitors, tea tastes so much better out of the appropriate receptacle in my humble opinion!

I think we'll all end up with OCD from hand washing and sanitising every time we touch something when this phase has finally left us, such habits will no doubt linger, maybe not a bad thing though!

garnet25 Wed 01-Jul-20 11:14:36

I'm another blister pack trimer. However, my main foible is talking to plants in the garden and greenhouse, I tell them to grow, to slowdown to bloom to produce more fr

garnet25 Wed 01-Jul-20 11:16:41

The above should read, more fruit. I chat to them every day.

hollysteers Wed 01-Jul-20 18:03:58

My oddity concerns ‘virgin’ books and magazines. If I have a new magazine or book new to me and someone opens it to show me something at random, I can’t look as it will taint it! I have to start at the beginning myself. The only exception is when reading a biography, I will look at the section of photos in the middle of the book.
I have a strange OCD habit of counting to myself say the four corners of a table with my toe or index finger or counting odd things. Also if I see one bird on the bird table or something similar, I say to myself “I must wait for another” as a safety measure of some strange kind...weird.
I’m 0 rhesus negative which may explain it..?

sodapop Wed 01-Jul-20 21:55:09

Oh yes hollysteers I hate it if I have a new book or magazine and someone else looks at it first - its mine !!

One of the offices I used to work in had windows which overlooked a car park. There was one guy whose parking routines used to keep us amused for ages.
He would drive around and around the car park for at least 10 minutes before he chose a parking bay. Then he would sit in the car and turn the lights, wipers etc on and off for about 5 minutes before he switched the engine off. When he eventually got out of the car he would lock it then walk round and around checking that all the doors were locked - he would do this at least 10 times before walking away. He would get half way across the car park and return and check all the doors again two or three times.
He returned to the car at lunch time and sat and ate his sandwiches in the car then go through his checking routines all over again.
After a while I felt really sorry for him, it must have been a nightmare for him.
