That word, I mean non-word, womxn: how to say it

I'm not going to say it out loud but I read it sometimes and wonder how I should be pronouncing it in my head.

Suggestions, please (apart from "oh, for god's sake!", obv).

suziewoozie Sat 12-Sep-20 13:35:43

I pronounce it ‘Bollocks’.

suziewoozie Sat 12-Sep-20 13:36:24

Or simply ‘woman’

suziewoozie Sat 12-Sep-20 13:51:34

Or, if I’m feeling inclusive, women and transwomen

I read the OP and thought "Another heading with a typo in it" smile

I didn't even know that word existed. Perhaps the "x" is pronounced as a click such as occurs in the word Xhosa as well as the language.

Oh, for God’s sake!!?

It honestly is completely irrelevant about how a made up word aimed at the erasure of women as a biological class is pronounced. The people using it are generally nasty goady misogynists which is why the word is pronounced bollocks. And let’s face of it, most of the people using the word still have them (physically that is)

Who knows? Ms used to seem odd but is now mainstream.

Riverwalk Sat 12-Sep-20 14:09:24

Bollox indeed!

Baggs Sat 12-Sep-20 14:12:25

At least Ms is pronounceable, kamiso ?

Loving your posts, suziewoozie ?

suziewoozie Sat 12-Sep-20 14:13:01

Ms was about equality not about making women disappear

Suzie is right. I just pronounce it 'no'.

Glorybee Sat 12-Sep-20 14:19:09

Spot on sooziewoozie to all your comments. I’d just like to add that here’s no such thing, in reality, as ‘cis’ women or ‘cis’ men.

suziewoozie Sat 12-Sep-20 14:34:05

I call it the ‘c’ word

Luckygirl Sat 12-Sep-20 14:41:59

I had never heard/seen it before - frankly I wish I hadn't.

Esspee Sat 12-Sep-20 14:42:24

I pronounce womxn "bull shit" with the stress on the bull.

trisher Sat 12-Sep-20 14:58:45

It's pronounced "wominks" and it is just the latest in feminism's attempts to lose the word woman or women because the word uses "man" and so some think diminishes women. The others include wymyn and wimmin. Really it's been a debate for over 50 years why make such a fuss now?

Daddima Sat 12-Sep-20 15:02:32

My son has been told to address his ‘ non- binary’ students as Mx ( pronounced Mix) followed by their surname.

( Oh, and ‘ Oh, for God’s sake! ‘)

eazybee Sat 12-Sep-20 15:03:33

If that is the case, what is wrong with lady?

AGAA4 Sat 12-Sep-20 15:10:56

Many of us have been women for around 50 years or more. I don't want to be a womxn/wominks. Still happy to be a woman.

Riverwalk Sat 12-Sep-20 15:16:26

Trisher this spelling emanates from transgender politics, not from traditional feminists.

Women are women and there's no need to piss about with the spelling.

Baggs Sat 12-Sep-20 15:38:45

It's pronounced "wominks"

In that case they've spelt it wrong. Twerps.

Also, why are you assuming no fuss was made about the other idiocies? Some of us did, if you count refusing to join in the idiocy by using the perfectly good word woman as making a fuss. Yes it contains 'man' but so does mankind, which refers to all human beings, not just male ones.

Quite so, riverwalk. Pissing about with what works perfectly well already covers all of it. If it aint broke don't fix it.

The word woman, and its meaning, aint broke.

fevertree Sat 12-Sep-20 15:41:19

My husband sometimes calls me a minx.

trisher Sat 12-Sep-20 15:50:43

Interesting then that as Jess Philips said "I've never met a transgender woman who objected to the word woman"

trustgone4sure Sat 12-Sep-20 16:00:02

Same here Luckygirl.
The world has gone ape shit.
