What would you say to your younger self?

I was given an old photo of myself aged about 8 by my Mum. Looking back at myself I looked a little shy and a little cheeky. 50 years later I would say to that little girl, dont listen to the bullies who make fun of your nose, they are just jealous of your slim figure. Dont worry about yearning for a pony, you will have your own pony from a foal for 32 years. Dont be sad wondering if you will ever have a boyfriend. You will meet your husband at college and be married for over 40 years with 2 children to be proud of and a lovely grand daughter. Dont worry about your career, your secretarial background will lead to a property law position which will serve you and your family well. Dont be sad, there are great times ahead!

I would say, don’t marry young, have a life first.
I don’t regret my choice, just the timing of it.
I have felt I missed out on so much worrying about mortgages, saving for the future etc.
I was a working wife from the age of 21 as were many of my generation.
My GD is 21 now, no responsibilities, enjoying life as much as is possible in 2020, but better times hopefully ahead.
I envy her.

Don't be in such a hurry to grow up
Don't get married so young, enjoy life first
Be financially independant
It's ok to put yourself first sometimes

Don’t live with your mistakes, you don’t have to.
Correct them and do better next time.
No one has the right to tell you how to live your life.

Don’t be so daft.

annodomini Sun 20-Sep-20 21:43:52

Don't commit to a man before you've met his parents. wink

Mapleleaf Sun 20-Sep-20 21:45:12

Don't worry about what other people think of you - how you look, your personality, what you should do with your life.
This is all easier said than done, of course, especially when you are younger and finding your way, but really, at the end of the day, no one else can live your life for you!

I wouldn't say a word. I would leave her to strike out and learn her own lessons in her own way.

Maggiemaybe Sun 20-Sep-20 23:14:05

You beat me to it, M0nica.

BlueBelle Sun 20-Sep-20 23:14:23

Don’t marry darling girl, enjoy your life

M0nica

I wouldn't say a word. I would leave her to strike out and learn her own lessons in her own way.

Same here.

And I wouldn't have listened to me anyhow.

I’d say, take more risks, you are brave and strong and will survive.

I think at 8 I was too busy having fun to listen to advice! My advice to any young person now would be ' find contentment in your life'

Teetime Mon 21-Sep-20 09:35:32

I would say leave home as soon as possible and dont look back.

Teetime Mon 21-Sep-20 09:35:49

but dont do it by getting married which is what I did.

Jaxjacky Mon 21-Sep-20 09:47:44

I wouldn’t have listened!

I'd say don't worry so much. Your nose isn't that big, you really aren't that ugly, your hair will get better. You will find a boyfriend. Your life will be a mix of good and bad - and you'll find the strength to cope.

Do what feels right for you, nobody else. Don't listen to the expectations of others but remember, you invariably reap what you sow in life so that any decisions you make will be your doing or undoing.

Avoid being a burden on others. Maintain independence.

PipandFinn Mon 21-Sep-20 10:12:32

Don't marry young (18)..!!! and the most important thing to do is ensure you are financially independent and you can then walk away from any abusive situation....

Lesley60 Mon 21-Sep-20 10:13:09

I would say look after your body and keep yourself fit, and have more confidence in yourself

Don't be a people pleaser - put yourself first more often.

TerryM Mon 21-Sep-20 10:31:19

Another who wouldn't say a thing.
Life has been tough but all the missteps and adventures has brought me to here.
It isn't perfect "here" but I am happy

Mamma7 Mon 21-Sep-20 10:36:56

Don’t worry.....

NannyC1 Mon 21-Sep-20 10:37:50

I would say. Listen you are not ugly or stupid like your mum and dad told you for years. It's not you it's them. You will leave it behind as you travel the world. Your are beautiful and clever. You are unique. You are kind. Your daughter will adore you and so will your granddaughter.
