Re-knitting sweater

Hi
I have been trying to re knit a sweater I knitted 30 or 40 years ago but haven't got the pattern. I don't recognize the stitch so am stuck! The first photo is the wrong side and the second one is the right side! Does anyone recognize it?

Is it Fisherman's stitch?
It's a long time since I knitted that stitch but it makes a thick, warm jumper.
That's a lovely colour.

I'm stuck on a cable stitch picked up after about 25 years, I keep getting it wrong.

I think it may be fisherman’s rib too

Multiple of 3 stitches
Row1. P
Row2. P. K stitch in the row below.rep from to last 2sts P2
Rep row 2 throughout

I thought fisherman’s rib looked the same on both sides?

Bathsheba Mon 02-Nov-20 22:38:26

It looks very like fisherman's rib, but I don't think it is because, as geekesse says, it should look the same on both sides.

It could be Brioche stitch, which looks almost identical on the right side to fisherman's rib. Not sure about the wrong side, but worth knitting a sample to see.

Knit over an even number of stitches
Foundation row: * Yo, s1, with yarn in back (wyib), k1; rep from * to end
Row 1: * Yo, sl 1, wyib, k2tog (sl st and yo of previous row); rep from * to end.
Repeat row 1

Sorry, just read the instructions again, and it should be, on both rows:

sl 1 wyib (no comma after the sl 1)

I'm impressed by all these expert knitters who can identify the OP's stitch. I'll use it for the next six inch square I make for blanket using left over wool.

Same here, I'm knitting squares of different stitches to put together into a blanket (keeps me calm and out of trouble).

I am due to have a shoulder replacement in 2 weeks. Any tips on how to cope whilst one arm is out of use. I.e. dressing, sleeping etc.

Mercedes* I am sorry to read you'll be going through this, and I hope it goes well. However, this is a thread about knitting, in the Arts & Crafts forum, and you're unlikely to get much help with your issue here. You'd be better off starting a thread of your own under the Health topic. Good luck, I hope it goes well x

oh wow! I love this thread, I used to be a relatively good knitter way back, then work took over.
now in my small craft club at church, and we can`t meet, I am stuck doing small garter stitch squares,, get someone else to sew them up.

done a scarf in simple k2 p2
so trying so hard to get motivated... that is my problem and this , I really, really hope will motivate me..

o.k slightly off thread, but I deem it so important when we can share and help others and you surely help me here.

so thank you

For anyone wanting to try out different knit stitches, I can thoroughly recommend this book. There are plenty of others on the market too, some with many more stitch examples than this, but I have had this one for many many years, and it has been so useful!

Patsytaylor Tue 03-Nov-20 09:53:42

Just spotted this. Few tips before you start new thread. I recently broke my arm. Buy some ponchos, invisible support vests (m&s), light waffle dressing gown.

BellaT2 Tue 03-Nov-20 10:06:56

To Mercedes - tube bra (google it - many examples) you can pull it up with one hand. Blouses, shirts or button through cadigans. Good luck!

Riggie Tue 03-Nov-20 10:16:33

Im wondering that as the back is different to the front if its some sort of slip stitch pattern.

SewnSew Tue 03-Nov-20 10:40:34

Mercedes, In the last few years I have broken both my shoulders so I know how awkward it will be for you while your shoulder heals. One very useful tip for you is to buy some front-fastening bras. They are so much easier to get on and off, even after you have healed. I buy mine online from Ample Bosom who do a good range of front-fastening styles and sizes.

Does Youtube demonstrate certain stitches? I’m a sewer rather than a knitter, but I find it easier to watch someone rather than read it.

The knitting you need is:
single rib, but, EVERY ROW PURL 1, KNIT 1 THE ROW BELOW.
#I have packed all my books etc for moving but have just got needles out and a scrap of wool. It is right.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 03-Nov-20 11:41:39

Could the mystery stitch be Moss stitch?

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 03-Nov-20 11:51:06

Hope this is clear.

Cables are a mare to pick up on, Callistemon if you leave the work for any length of time. I abandoned a cardigan for over two years and then tried to pick up the antler cables where I had left them and they came out too long. Got there eventually but it didn’t help me to find renewed enthusiasm for the project!!

You'll have to sleep on your back, I think, so a pillow to stop you turning on to that side might help.
When my shoulder was out of action, I found pull on clothes were easier, I could manage to put on a loose top then put a cardigan around that arm and just put the good arm into a sleeve, but it was summer.
I did buy some front fastening bras too, they're not very flattering but when i could wear one again they were much easier to put on.
