Where do you keep your car keys

There has been a spare of thefts of, and from, cars in our village, mostly targeting keyless cars.

My car is keyless so I'm a bit worried!! We keep our keys in a tin in a drawer in a chest in the hall!! I hear differing views on whether this is as good as a Faraday Box.

Anyone know?

Where do you keep your car keys?

Can you turn the signal off? My SiL can do this with his.

Drop them in a little pot on side table in living room. Knew someone who left them on window ledge next to front door and found someone trying to hook them through the letterbox.

Mine are on a hook in the kitchen the spare in an upstairs drawer. Sorry I don’t know what a faraday box is

I keep them where I can never find them! Seriously though, I take them upstairs and keep them either in a drawer in the bedroom or in the back office, well away from the gadgets they have nowadays to clone the car code. Mine is keyless too.

I have heard that keeping them in the microwave overnight prevents detection and theft of cars.

I don’t drive anymore.

We now take ours upstairs at night, after a friend had her house broken into, while they were sleeping and the burglars took the keys from the hall stand.

In my handbag that goes up to bed with me every night, my husband keeps his in his pocket, so ditto.

Only one keyless car in our family which belongs to one of the younger generation in our family. The key is taken upstairs at night (don’t forget not to leave a spare key lying about) and put in a metal box, they also use the old tech solution of a steering lock on the car.

Never leave the keys on a hall table, my friend had both their cars stolen in one night, apparently thieves used a rod with a hook on through the letterbox.
We cancelled a new car we were going to buy because it was keyless, you might as well put a neon sign on top of your car inviting theft.

On a tray on a radiator in the hall. As the hall is a dining hall it is big enough for the radiator to be a long way from the door and as the keys are the far end of the radiator, they would first need to knock the land line and several ornaments on the floor to get at them.

hanging at the back of a chair int he kitchen.

Attached to the key fob in my rucksack. Very rarely use a hand bag, so can quickly locate the keys.

We used to have a bowl on the hall chest into which all keys were deposited. We stopped doing that when dh locked himself out so hooked his keys out of the pot with a bamboo cane.

As for taking them to bed - a friend who was a scary head teacher woke up to find a man in her bedroom going through her handbag for her car keys! She sent him off with a flea in his ear.

We had a very nasty break in last year. thankfully we were out.

They came for valuables in the house but picked up the key for my husbands car as they were leaving

I was getting calls from Porsche to say the car was being driven without the tracker but because we were at a dinner party I ignored my vibrating phone.

Porsche were able to disable the vehicle remotely but not before they wrote it off and 8 other vehicles in the process.

It was devastating to think so many families had been affected by the actions of these men.

We had good cctv and they were caught as a result.

Keys are now kept downstairs and easily accessible, if someone comes for the car they can have it, I do not want someone coming upstairs to get a key.

Nobody has ever attempted to take the Rolls

LauraNorder Fri 20-Nov-20 18:35:51

Especially as they are in the fridge as soon as they're buttered

Sorry couldn't resist after the Porsche story, lucky you Missfoodlove

LauraNorder I nearly wet myself ??

Pantglas2 Fri 20-Nov-20 18:42:37

Yes, LauraNorder, James (my chauffeur) tells me he is most diligent and keeps the keys about his person at all times.

I shall make it my business to ascertain the truth of this assertion later......?

In a drawer in the kitchen. My previous car was keyless, when I ordered my new one I specified keys, spare wheel and a proper handbrake. All extra £ of course.

TerriBull Fri 20-Nov-20 18:55:08

We both keep our car keys on the dining room table. I'm hating these stories about break ins, imo it would be better for a thief to make off with a car if asleep upstairs, I'd hate him (I make the presumption it would be a him) to come upstairs whilst we were asleep. No thanks! take the car, can always claim on the insurance. Mine'd be safe anyway it's only a Fiat 500 grin

My garage and drive are at the back of my house, so I leave by the kitchen door. I keep my car fob in an empty packet of Uncle Bens rice in the kitchen cupboard.?

Tangerine Fri 20-Nov-20 19:04:16

In my handbag.

GrannySomerset Fri 20-Nov-20 19:22:04

Our car is keyless and both keys are kept in Faraday pouches, one in the kitchen and one upstairs. I had read so many accounts of such cars being stolen that I went on line to find suitable containers. It’s now automatic to put the key away when I come in.
