They've lost my Covid test!!!!!

I kid you not. DH became ill last Saturday. He's not a giver in but he took himself to bed so I knew he felt really ill. Fever, cough, sore throat, tight chest, aching joints..'hmm Covid' we thought. By the next day I too was developing similar symptoms so we decided to go for a test. We waited and waited for the results but they never arrived. This morning I phoned 119 only to be told that the chances were than our tests had been lost but as we have Covid symptoms we should assume we have it and quarantine accordingly. We weren't going to mix over Christmas other than DH's 12 year old son (my stepson) was to spend a few days with us and go to his mam's on Boxing Day. Initially we put it on hold waiting for the results but now it's been cancelled because we can't risk that we've got it. So we're in quarantine until New Years Day.

Call me a cynic but wouldn't it suit the powers that be to 'lose' test results leaving more of us in limbo knowing that most of us won't take the risk of infecting others and help to stop the Christmas super spreader effect.

Either way I'm annoyed. Do we have Covid or have we picked up some flu like virus? Fortunately we hadn't mixed with anyone prior to becoming ill so fingers crossed we haven't shared it....if that's what it is. But whatever we have it would be nice to know. If this is Covid we can relax a little knowing how it affects us. If it's not then we still don't know. I may seem to be nit picking but we're both in vulnerable groups (not the stay in your homes group but the next one). DH has diabetes, thyroid, pernicious anaemia and a very weak left lung that is prone to collapse whenever it feels like it....yes a sulky lung grin and I have range of conditions too.

It's too late to have a retest because we've had the symptoms for more than five days.

Do you or your husband have a headache? That it a very common recent symptom. Some people have a headache and no other symptom.
I wish you both all the very best and hope that you feel better soon flowers

Also, do you have an oximeter?
If not it might be worth getting one if you can.

Big advertising programme here----get your tests ! Guess what ? Test centres have had to close because of demand ! You couldn't make it up. Can't anything be done right ??

I feel like Victor Meldrew today grin

Your not on your own vampirequeen,a friend had the test and they lost his,he couldn`t then have his operation.

HootyMcOwlface Thu 24-Dec-20 11:28:37

I don’t understand why you can’t get another testSurely you will still have the virus showing in your system if you have it? Otherwise why do you have to isolate for that length of time?

Blossoming Thu 24-Dec-20 11:30:42

I wondered that too Hooty

You have to have the test in the first five days. DH is already outside of that and I only have one day left but DH is too ill to go now and I can't go on my own (he's my carer). So further tests are out of the question. We're quarantining to play safe....well to keep others safe just in case.

We've both got headaches. DH seems to have got it far worse than me. I'm a sickness wimp but apart from yesterday when I just felt too ill to stay up I'm able to get on with things as long as I don't push myself too hard and take lots of rests otherwise I get breathless. Poor DH who usually continues through illnesses is in bed again. If Covid wasnt' around I'd say he had the flu and it might well be but we have no way of knowing. It's so annoying that we did the right thing and they lost the results.

Hello. It sounds to me like you definitely have it.
Headache, breathless, fatigue.
You really need to keep an eye on DH as he has lung issues.
Can you ask someone to get you an oximeter from a pharmacy so that you can keep check on his oxygen levels?

Toadinthehole Thu 24-Dec-20 13:27:13

Yes...by the sounds of it, the test seems fairly academic now. It may not be covid, but you both sound unwell enough to not want to do anything anyway ?. Look after yourselves.

Luckygirl Thu 24-Dec-20 13:32:19

I am sorry you are both unwell.

Test and trace - what a blooming joke this is!

I hope you will be better soon.

I’m sorry OP. We are waiting for a test result for youngest. He looks like he has a cold but he does have a headache & that has been fairly constant.

It was really busy at the testing centre yesterday. Last time we went it was quiet and took over 48 hours for results so I’m not holding my breath

Bluebellwould Thu 24-Dec-20 14:10:17

Vampirequeen, if you are in the uk you can get test kits sent to your home. I’m waiting my results from a test I sent in on Monday, nothing yet. You only have to post it in a postbox that has an NHS label on it. The process is rigorously explained online. I’m waiting an essential operation on January 9 which I am desperately waiting for after having been in a and e three weeks ago. I’m living on skim milk only which is pretty miserable. Hope you and your husband get well quickly. Let us know how you get on.

Jane10 Thu 24-Dec-20 14:14:38

Gosh it certainly sounds like Covid. Whatever it is I hope you both feel much better soon. Don't overdo it and push yourself too hard.

My walk in centre, 2 mile away , was fully booked so was asked to make an hour and a half journey to another one. I felt too ill to drive so ordered a home test which took 4 days to arrive. I isolated anyway but 5 days later got a negative result. Still not sure if I have had Covid.

vampirequeen Fri 25-Dec-20 17:04:48

Well we had a Christmas Day surprise. The lost results arrived this afternoon. We're both positive. In a way it's a relief. At least we know we've now had Covid and not some flu like bug with Covid still waiting in the wings.

Jane10 Fri 25-Dec-20 17:29:22

Well that explains a lot. If you're both on the mend that's great. It's relief to know you've actually had it.
