What are you glad you don’t have to do anymore?

I’ve just been watching my next door neighbours playing with their little daughter on a sledge. One pulling her back to the top of the slope and the other catching her at the bottom. It brought a smile to my face watching them from the comfort of my house but I’m glad I’m not obliged to play in the snow anymore. (Even if my 21 year old head tells me I would have fun, my ageing body certainly wouldn’t thank me!) it got me thinking. What else am I glad I can’t/don’t have to do anymore??

Drive to work on cold frosty mornings after defrosting the car.
Online teaching as I took early retirement 18 months ago.

I do miss work but not the politics

Im glad I don’t have to deal with periods any more, either those in school or the other kind.

I'm glad I don't have to mark anymore. As a retired English teacher, marking was constant. Every night and every weekend. And yes, not having to defrost the car and drive to work. Living alone I no longer have to plan meals for a family every day.

Live in a house without central heating.

Get up when I don't want to. I feel very sorry for our young neighbours when I hear them scraping the car windows - it's such a blessing to be able to roll over and go back to sleep.

On the other hand - I'd do it like a shot if I could just pop over and look after the grandsons again. sad

This is due to the covid situation rather than age, but I am glad I dont have to go to works nights out anymore. I know they arent compulsory but you feel obligated. I need to say no more.

Pantglas2 Sat 09-Jan-21 13:37:45

Go to work!

Gelisajams Sat 09-Jan-21 13:38:31

Those icy fern patterns were pretty though Eazybee ?

It's the scraping car windows that I really, really don't miss. I used to dread that and the worrying drive to arrive at work while it was still dark. It was the sight of dawn breaking over the hospital as I arrived that clinched my decision to retire. Never regretted it.

Take orders from idiots who knew a lot less than me but were paid a lot more.

Purpledaffodil Sat 09-Jan-21 13:45:49

Set an alarm clock. Luxury to wake up when you’re ready to! ?

Mollygo Sat 09-Jan-21 13:49:57

Get up early for work, especially in this weather. I still work, but no early mornings.

Bathsheba Sat 09-Jan-21 13:51:25

Yes, definitely the ice-scraping. That has to be number 1 on my list. And close second is not having to work to deadlines, and not having to do other people's bidding. It is just so wonderful being able to do what I want, when I want. Or simply do abso-bloody-lutely nothing all day if I choose grin

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sat 09-Jan-21 13:53:14

Almost all the above apply. Unless I've an early appointment which can't be avoided I never set the alarm. Not having to cook big meals every day. As I learned to drive in my mid-fifties I don't have to wait at cold, wet and windy bus stops with shopping unless I choose to. When I get my bus pass (hopefully before the month is out) I won't have to prat about for the exact change for the fare.

Teaching. I bumped into my daughter's retired Headteacher this morning for the first time in years, and said I'd thought of her with lockdown - and she has gone back two days a week! Such a hard, demanding job during normal times.

Gingster Sat 09-Jan-21 13:57:45

Ditto Lucca.im glad I don’t have to buy sanitary wear any more ?

EllanVannin Sat 09-Jan-21 13:59:31

This weather, trying to run at 07.00 in the morning for the 07.30 bus for the hour's journey to work. I don't honestly know how I did it ! Though I was still dashing around airports-----but that was different grin
I feel I deserve these long sit-downs. I burnt myself out I think

Periods. Risk reducing total hysterectomy ten years ago which ended the torture every month. Bliss!

ixion Sat 09-Jan-21 14:35:34

Be bound by the clock!
My first day of retirement, I ceremoniously removed my watch, now only used for appointments and car park stays!

Beauregard Sat 09-Jan-21 14:46:55

Washing and blow drying my hair every single day. Since retiring I managed to go a couple of days in between washes and then lockdown have me the opportunity to grow it longer, which I have wanted to do for ages. I now go at least three days between washes as it doesn't go greasy and flat any more. I love it - so much less bother.

Beauregard Sat 09-Jan-21 14:48:07

Gave not have! Blinking auto correct.

Bakingmad0203 Sat 09-Jan-21 14:51:25

Sitting in meetings listening to colleagues pontificating about something that had no relevance to the subject matter of the meeting and worrying about all the urgent work on my desk that I could have been doing instead!

Bathsheba Sat 09-Jan-21 15:55:33

Oh God yes, meetings, ugh! How I loathed them.

Calendargirl Sat 09-Jan-21 16:06:02

Go to work.

Driving to said work in mid winter, snowy and frosty, wondering if the roads would be passable. Kept me awake at night worrying about the morrow.

Go to work Christmas parties.

Having to hug and kiss virtual strangers on first acquaintance!
