Uncomfortable moments in other people's houses

Have you had any?

When I was about 17, I went go my boyfriends house for the first time and met his dad, who was practicing a song by sitting with a finger in one ear and warbling away. (He was in a band)

His wife kept shouting at him from upstairs, and every now and then he would roll his eyes and mimic her mouth with his hand....

After a while he ignored her and carried on singing "rolling in my sweet baby's arms"

Suddenly she ran down the stairs in her bra and knickers, with the toothpaste tube in hand, then proceeded to squirt a huge dollop on top of his bald head. smile

MissA ....you do make me laugh ?

I thought this thread was going to be about the corona virus, and breaking rules. It's so long since I've been in anyone elses's house, I have all but forgotten.

Awkward times: Yes. I saw my friend's DM and our doctor (who had a wife and 4 DC at home) kissing in my friend's back garden. They saw me watching.

MissAdventure Sat 16-Jan-21 13:39:57

It's funny now, but it was excruciatingly uncomfortable at the time.
I was very shy, and after squirting the toothpaste, she came over and shook my hand and said hello.

MissAdventure Sat 16-Jan-21 13:41:42

Did any of you ever say anything about it, grammaretto?

Missfoodlove Sat 16-Jan-21 13:52:43

To cut a long story short we were invited into a couples home for food and wine....or so we thought.
They wanted a wife swap.
Swift exit.

There was my sprout top moment which I have mentioned before blush Dinner at DH's colleague's house. Me wittering on because I was nervous. Told our hostess about our awful neighbours and that how ridiculous they were for eating sprout tops.
She replied 'Well we're having those today. Please feel free to leave them.' I was mortified. I was young and had never heard of such a thing. I love them now.

Grammaretto Sat 16-Jan-21 14:00:01

I am afraid I did and all hell broke loose. I innocently not reported it to my DM who then told her df who told the neighbourhood. I was so sorry I had been the one to break the news and even now I wish I hadn't seen them. His marriage broke up and I think he moved away as a doctor was supposed to be above reproach back in the bad old days and my friend's mum, a very attractive divorcee, got no sympathy.

I must have dropped the side padding from my Wonderbra in my boyfriend's bathroom, as his mother waved it around and said 'is this yours'
I don't think she realised what it was, but I was very embarrassed.
She became my MIL eventually, but we never mentioned it.

Kate, your story reminds me of a time we were at a rather refined dinner party in a leafy suburb of Edinburgh. The hostess was the mother of a friend and her new husband was a retired professor.
During the delicious meal, I kept hearing an owl hooting and asked everyone to stop talking and listen.
There it goes again. Is it a tawny owl or a screech owl? Listen.
"I think it's my nose" said the elderly professor, and it was..

Kate1949 Sat 16-Jan-21 14:09:35

Grammaretto That's hilarious. grin

Many years ago in the 70"s we were invited along for supper to a colleague of my DH. Saturday evening arrived round 7'ish. Host asked my DH what he would like to drink and offered 2 different types of canned beer. I had a soft drink as I was driving. Around 8.30 it was decided it was supper time, I was starving by then. DH and colleague went out to the local bakers for some rolls, I didn't really think much of it at the time as I had no idea what we were having but didn't smell any food being cooked. On their return, we were asked what we would like on our roll and I said anything really but I don't take butter (non-butter eater) so I was given a jam roll for my supper and that was it DH had jam and butter. DH only had one can of beer as they only had the two which were offered at the beginning. Very strange evening. Always sticks in my mind. grin

I was at my future in-laws house early on my relationship with DH. He said something I disagreed with, so I started to tell him it was balderdash. Halfway through I realised that perhaps in their company I should be a bit more diplomatic, so I stopped at bal-

Grammaretto - so funny.

We were invited to stay with a German couple we had met on the last couple of days of our honeymoon. When showing us round their small flat i could only see one very large bed. Yes we all slept in that large bed ... Well I didnt sleep. .....it was all very strange, we hardly knew them.
Anyway we were there fir a few days and nothing untoward took place - though they did take us to a sex club which dear reader was a real eye opener. They later divorced but we are still in touch, over 50 years later.

Ha ha. Love this thread. I have three, I'll be brief

I have in the course of my job been in thousands of peoples homes, many of them on more than one occasion.

My first incident was at house I had visited many times but had had a gap of a year or two since the last visit. All the family were gathered cooing over the new baby. I said “I'll just wash my hands then” and turned to the kitchen door which lead to a small utility room. Only it didn't now. It was a walk in larder. The family sat open mouthed. “What's she doing in the pantry?” asked a stunned granny.

The second was when a patient I was attending to needed some item from the bathroom. I said I would get it and where's the bathroom. She told me and I skipped up the stairs and flung open the (wrong door) to collect the item. Only to be faced with her husband, stark naked. He had decided to put on smarter clothes for my visit (???). I was honoured, I think

The third was me and my patient, 5 days after the birth of her baby. She needed stitches out. We went upstairs to the bedroom. She lay on a towel on the bed, no knickers and legs akimbo. I was perched on my knees peering closely at her nether regions. We slowly became aware of a movement at the window. There, chamois in hand and a blank look on his face was the window cleaner.

I was once collecting DS from a playdate. The little boy answered the door and led us into the kitchen where his parents were. There was a huge splat on the wall dripping spaghetti and sauce and a broken plate on the floor. However, the parents greeted me charmingly and we were soon ushered back outside. DS later told me he didn't know grownups shouted so much.
They were divorced soon after that.

Like MissA, my awkward encounter was also in a boyfriend's house (so many years ago). I'd been invited for tea to boyfriend's house and after we'd eaten and cleared away, I was led into a room where all the family were gathered around a grand piano. Boyfriend's mother said that they were a very musical family and then the father started to play the piano; very, very badly, and the whole family started to sing along. But not one of them could carry a tune in a basket and the noise was just a cacophony of discordant sounds. I thought they were messing about and started to laugh.... but they weren't messing about at all! It was so awkward and embarrassing and they probably thought I was just rude. I wasn't invited again.
