My Mum used to say a lot of things but a couple I remember particularly are
‘You’re a long time dead’ i.e. enjoy yourself whilst you can and
‘If you can’t say anything good about someone, don’t say anything at all’
Pretty cluey some of the older ones .

"I didn't come over on the boat yesterday" We lived in liverpool and think she was referring to the Irish! Apologies!

CanadianGran Wed 10-Feb-21 07:11:01

'Butter wouldn't melt in her mouth.'

Pantglas2 Wed 10-Feb-21 07:25:16

Life’s not fair - get used to it!

(I still haven’t....?!)

Juliet27 Wed 10-Feb-21 07:27:30

You’re laughing now, you’ll be crying later.

Calendargirl Wed 10-Feb-21 07:49:54

“It’ll end in tears!”

Esspee Wed 10-Feb-21 07:52:49

Empty vessels make the most noise

Juliet27 Wed 10-Feb-21 08:03:52

You’ll miss me when I’m gone

grandmajet Wed 10-Feb-21 08:06:13

I’ll knock that smile on to the other side of your face.
She never did! She was a lovely Mum.

Oopsadaisy1 Wed 10-Feb-21 08:23:44

I’ll knock you into the middle of next week, if you’re not careful (she never did)
Who does she think she is, Lady Muck of dung hill?
Wipe that smile off of your face
If they jumped in front of a bus would you do it too?
Still waters run deep ( not sure what that was about, as it used to be whispered)
Do you think that money grows on trees?
Find a pin and pick it up the rest of the day you’ll have good luck ( to me after she had finished sewing , so that the cat wouldn’t step on any stray pins, I had to crawl on the floor to check )
Nice is as nice does.

To name but a few, my Mum had a saying for every occasion!

Oopsadaisy1 Wed 10-Feb-21 08:24:26

Oh and
I’m not as green as I’m cabbage looking

Puzzler61 Wed 10-Feb-21 08:30:36

From my mum - Life’s not fair, whoever told you it was? and
If you can’t be nice, be quiet.
My dad had many strange sayings - he came from rural Herefordshire.
Do you think we’re made of money?
and if he thought one of us children were getting too big for our boots was Be careful, or your arse will hit the ground with a bump!

Elizabeth1 Wed 10-Feb-21 08:33:35

If you want something done right do it yourself.

BladeAnnie Wed 10-Feb-21 08:34:46

I've no more idea than the man in the moon!! She still uses this phrase and my partner and I just smile to ourselves

Marydoll Wed 10-Feb-21 08:35:36

Its a sair fecht. Life is really hard.

NotAGran55 Wed 10-Feb-21 08:40:19

My mum used to say that it was raining ‘ kittens & puppies’ when it was only spitting smile

BlueSapphire Wed 10-Feb-21 08:59:50

My mother used to call me a "daft ha'pporth" at least once a day. And not in a nice way.

shysal Wed 10-Feb-21 09:09:51

'You have to suffer to be beautiful' as she dragged a brush through the knots in my hair.

She also accused the family of 'lack of inconsideration'. We never dared to mention the double negative!

harrigran Wed 10-Feb-21 09:21:32

If I was frowning or scowling my mother used to say " the wind will change and your face will stay like that " confused

annodomini Wed 10-Feb-21 09:50:19

If my mother was amused by something or someone, she used to say, 'It's enough to make a cat laugh'. ?

Kate1949 Wed 10-Feb-21 09:56:52

When I was a teenager and complained about how I looked in an outfit, my mother would say 'No man will get down off his horse to look at you'. She was from Southern Ireland and had lots of strange sayings.

midgey Wed 10-Feb-21 10:01:59

I don’t cut my cabbages twice! Meaning dad was not going to repeat himself!
My mother used to say....that’s a bit more than somewhat! when she was surprised by something.

Mollygo Wed 10-Feb-21 10:13:44

Mum’s favourites,
‘Wait and see’ if we asked what was for pudding.
Just because you’ve heard/read it, doesn’t make it right or empty vessels make most noise, if we were arguing.
If you can’t be nice, say nowt!
She had a lot more too.
