Megan and Harry again!

Can someone please enlighten me in letting me know what was wrong in Harry and meghan saying "service is universal"? Surely it is. We also like to help each other and provide a service to each other when we can, that's what I'd like to believe anyway. Isn't this what they meant? There's seems to be a lot of H & M bashing again over this, however, it's all gone quiet over Prince Andrew's alleged sexual relationship with an underage girl. Am I missing something?

janeainsworth Sun 21-Feb-21 12:20:59

I couldn’t really care less about H&M & the less I hear about them the better, but I think the royal family distinguish between royal service and public service.
H&M saying they could serve just as well outside the RF was therefore interpreted as a snub of the ‘up yours’ variety, for want of a better expression.

vegansrock Sun 21-Feb-21 12:39:15

Oh no why stir the pot again? Wait for the H and M haters to pile on .....

Aveline Sun 21-Feb-21 12:41:18

Meghan and Harry who? Not interested in nonentities.

Alegrias1 Sun 21-Feb-21 12:42:07

In the words of the sainted Janey Godley, and to be said in an aggressive Glasgow accent: "Why would ye bring that up? What's wrong wi'ye'?" ???

This link, by the way, is not for the fainthearted.

I think janeainsworth is spot on.

Anniebach Sun 21-Feb-21 12:42:31

Why not keep to thread title and stop criticising posters ?

AmberSpyglass Sun 21-Feb-21 12:42:40

I think they’re marginally more interesting the Queen and infinitely more interesting than that tedious old racist Prince Philip, Aveline.

Happyme Sun 21-Feb-21 12:46:21

Maybe the difference is that Andrew keeping his head down and there is nothing new to say whereas H&M aren't.

Think the view is that Royal duty is just that, duty implies obligations rather than choice. H&M statement that "service is universal" could be viewed as a snub as it implies that there is no difference between choosing to carry out work that benefits others and carrying out that work because you feel it is your duty to do so. One is of your own free will the other is a willingness to sacrifice free for the good of others

At least I think that is what I am trying to say confused.

Happyme Sun 21-Feb-21 12:49:28

free will even ?

Sara1954 Sun 21-Feb-21 12:50:43

I agree Jane, if I never hear the names Megan and Harry again it’ll be too soon.
I have no interest in what they do or don’t do, I’ve no interest in the new baby apart from hoping all goes well.
I was fond of Harry, but he’s no longer the Harry we knew and loved

Galaxy Sun 21-Feb-21 12:56:16

I think Andrew keeping his head down is part of the problem. He should be providing the authorities with any relevant information.

Calendargirl Sun 21-Feb-21 13:00:52

The response H&M gave was viewed as ‘impertinent’ by Nick Witchell, the BBC Royal Correspondent/Reporter.

I agree with him. Meghan’s words I suspect.

AmberSpyglass Sun 21-Feb-21 13:02:37

“Impertinent”?! They’re adults, not children. I think Megan is probably one of the best things that happened to him.

Madgran77 Sun 21-Feb-21 13:04:22

Specifically on the OP question I think that a difference is seen between "service" and philanthropy". So Bill Gates has made millions from his business and uses that ohilantgropically to develop projects, donate to charity etc. Service is seen more as serving others without personal financial gain, either prior to or whilst serving. Technically the RF dont financially gain directly from their lives being "devoted to public service"! (But ofcourse there is another whole discussion (on another thread I would say) about their personal financial gain from an accident of birth!

Anyway, I think the above explanation us the gist if what the hoo ha is about!

Calendargirl Sun 21-Feb-21 13:05:22

Well AmberSpyglass, then they should act like adults, and not try to get the last word in.

Please spell her name correctly, as that upsets many on GN.

At least by keeping 'his head down' PA is mitigating any further embarrassment to the Royal Family, whereas H & M seem to be doing the opposite.

An interview with Oprah is what many aspire too. Often regarded as the one that brings the maximum publicity; as high as they can go, or as low depending on your point of view.

Regardless of what the interview reveals, perhaps the Royal family will have a collective sight of relief once it's been aired and the ensuing publicity dies down.

Anything else they have to say surely will be 'old news' as it's all been spoken about, and hopefully any future disclosures will be infrequent and less publicised.

Anniebach Sun 21-Feb-21 13:08:19

I think Harry is the best thing to happen to Megan,
there are things she feels strongly about and I think she wants to get into politics, this would be more difficult for a tv actress that a duchess who met some world leaders .

NellG Sun 21-Feb-21 13:25:14

There's nothing wrong with them saying it, there was just no need to.

I'd prefer it if they'd do us all a service and go off and be of service elsewhere - quietly and with some dignity and discretion.

I'd be equally happy to see PA formally questioned and investigated .

I doubt either will happen.

janeainsworth Sun 21-Feb-21 13:28:21

Anniebach I think she wants to get into politics, this would be more difficult for a tv actress that a duchess who met some world leaders
On the contrary. There is nothing stopping an actor going into politics and several have, whereas Rule No 1 of being royal is No Politics.

Peasblossom Sun 21-Feb-21 13:36:29

I just like people-any people- to be true, to have integrity.

I find the “green” better world lectures really irritating -from anyone- when combined with a lifestyle that completely contradicts the lecture.

If you believe in something then live by it. I hate the bandwagon fakery.

Grammaretto Sun 21-Feb-21 13:36:59

Am I alone in liking Harry and Meghan?
Why pick over one line from their statement?
I think I will hang on to the nice bit which said that they will always be a much loved members of the family.

Anniebach Sun 21-Feb-21 13:39:44

That nice bit was said by the palace, they didn’t have a nice bit
in their statement

Greeneyedgirl Sun 21-Feb-21 13:42:01

Allegrias1 That link was brilliant. I just love Janey Godley.

Anniebach Sun 21-Feb-21 13:42:14

Being married to Harry has put her on the world stage, how many trying to get into politics gets on Oprah ?

Blossoming Sun 21-Feb-21 13:57:25

I wish them well, whatever they decide to do with their lives.
