Following on from the thread about actors - which singers do you think are over rated?

For me it has to be Sting - all his songs sound the same and he just sings the same words over and over again.

I don't want to be unkind and name names but I feel that many of todays singers who win those TV talent shows (which I don't watch) who are here today yet gone tomorrow would come under this category.

All those ones who sing with a nasal American accent (but aren't American).

Warblers and screechers like Mariah Carey.
Wouldn’t go to the end of the road for Madonna or Paul McCartney.

Adele definitely! Nothing wrong giving a gong to people who have spent a lifetime producing good music or writing songs, but she was a 5 minute wonder and that was ridiculous. I also dislike her potty mouth which definitely had no place in the Royal Albert Hall.
Also find Sam Smith soooo annoying.
Agree about Sting (and Police) whose songs are so repetitive.

I can’t agree re Adele. I’m not a great fan but she is talented, writes great songs and has an excellent voice. I’ve always found Paul McCartney - apres The Beatles - hugely overrated.

Frank Sinatra

I agree re warblers and screechers. I think Adele is amazing. I don't 'get' Tina Turner. Not wishing you speak ill of the dead but Cilla's voice was awful.

DanniRae Wed 24-Feb-21 12:26:46

Agree with Frank Sinatra and Cilla Black. Paul McCartney was OK but he definitely can't sing any more. Never could stand Lulu either.

I think Adele is very talented. Great voice and writes lovely songs.

I agree about Sting but Bob Geldof tops my list.

Singers who shout. What is it about the louder the better? Even gentle songs get shouted nowadays.

Hate drawn out notes and warbling too?

grandmajet Wed 24-Feb-21 12:49:11

Adele has a great voice but can’t enunciate. Drives me mad. Skyfow!
People whose lips wobble when they are singing. Yuk.
Prince. Lesley Garrett.

Some people who can’t sing in the traditional sense are nonetheless great to listen to. Bob Dylan, Oasis and the like.

I dont like singers who ruin a decent song by doing all sorts of vocal acrobatics. In most cases there is no need for them.

BlueSky Wed 24-Feb-21 13:09:49

No decent singer after the ‘60s! wink

Cheryl Cole and Victoria Beckham spring to mind. Neither of them can carry a tune in a bucket. Managed to make oodles of money out of it, though.

Ed Sheeran

Can't agree about Adele think she has a wonderful voice, unlike Lily Allen who has a barely there voice, thin and reedy imo.

missingmarietta Wed 24-Feb-21 13:52:40

Ed Sheeran
Sam Smith
James Arthur

Poppyred Wed 24-Feb-21 13:53:47

Madonna
Bob Geldof
Paul McCartney
Melanie C

Love Adele.... wow what a voice!

TerriBull Wed 24-Feb-21 13:56:26

Definitely agree with you grandma jet regarding Bob Dylan and Oasis, not what you'd call conventionally good voices but have always liked their music.

I never said Adele doesn't have a good voice or write some good songs. But she has only been around for a very short time and yet has been idolised and given a gong, as if she had been contributing to the music industry for a lifetime. Therefore she is overrated.

BigBertha1 Wed 24-Feb-21 14:07:04

Lulu - has to be top of my list what a racket.

Then;-

Robbie Williams - cant sing, cant dance, cant act.

And these will cause a stir
Andre Bocelli and Alfie Boe - far too strangulated for me.

muse Wed 24-Feb-21 14:11:29

Warblers, Wobblers and Screamers

Currently, Dolly Parton's and Barry Gib's warbles are annoying me. Islands in the Stream

Casdon Wed 24-Feb-21 14:26:57

Chestnut Adele had her first top 40 hit in 2009, and has had 18 top 40 singles since then, with all her albums smashing it too, she’s hardly a raw newcomer who hasn’t established herself? I think her voice is amazing.

I don’t rate Madonna, and I know it’s sacrilege to say it, but I think Elton John is way overrated, his songs bore me.

shysal Wed 24-Feb-21 15:43:23

Kylie Minogue is one of the nasal singers with a false american accent.
