Cream or jam first

We're the same Shropshirelass, jam with the cream on top.

It has to be jam first for me so I can pile the cream on top in a huge dollop!

Jam first but a lot here do it the other way round. I assumed it was because I was British born.

NO!NO! NO! I do mine Devonian style, clotted cream first with a large dollop of jam on the cream, any other way is anathema! And I am from the West Country!

I'm with others here - jam first holds the cream in place. Not that I often have such stuff these days, sigh.

I did wonder whether Devon does it Sainsbury style, and Cornwall as we seem to prefer.

I think pastie-crimping - top or side - is the same County debate.

Jam first. Cream dollops more than jam does so it makes sense to have a nice thick flat layer of jam with a big heap of cream.

On a purely technical note putting the jam on first creates a waterproof barrier that stops the cream from making the scone soggy...assuming you’re not wolfing them down, whole, of course ?

But the cream takes the place of butter and clotted cream doesn't sink in,it stays nicely in place.

Sorry I shall have to leave this thread, I feel ill at the thought of putting jam on first!

Definitely cream first, clotted cream, it acts as the butter layer, then a dollop of jam.
I’ve never had a scone go soggy.

I like cream first then jam. It just looks ‘prettier’!

I always put the jam first, but thinking about it, we used to put jam on our rice pudding.

Definitely jam first. If you put enough cream on, you would not be able to balance the jam on the top....

If it’s a fruit scone which this was it should only have butter on. Jam and cream in whatever order you prefer are only for plain scones.

No, because you eat them in halves, you don't sandwich the two halves together.

Jam on each half first then cream and eat them separately.

Depends if I am in Devon or Cornwall, I really try not to indulge on a regular basis ?

Devonshire splits are the way to go when in Devon not scones.

We have our scones the Cornish way and put the jam on first even when we lived in Devon.
