Always Think Twice About Naming A Child.

During my 91 years on this earth I have met many folk with names that conjure up various thoughts as to WHY the parents had not really thought about the consequences of naming their off spring.
Below is a rhyme I wrote concerning some folk I have worked with during my life. No doubt many who reads this will know of someone they have come across in their lives with a name that could be more than embarrassing for the person so named.

NAME THIS CHILD

During all my years on earth I have heard many a peculiar name
Did parents think that this would help bring their offspring fame?
I have lived next door to a Dickie Bird and a Dusty Miller too
And I used to know an Ida Downe believe me this is true

There was an Ivor Lott a Will Power and a Robin Hood
Also Rusty Locke and Blackie Smith and a girl named Bebe Goode
I have worked with Eva Stone and Lydia Potts and an Eileen Back
All of them have had to live with such a great amount of flak.

There was another girl I worked with whose name was May Trump
You can well imagine how she felt and why she often had the hump.
One name imprinted on my mind from many years gone by
Was of a girl starting work and I swear that this is no lie,

Of all the names that I had heard this was the unkindest of all
When the boss asked her for her name she answered Ophelia Ball.
The look of horror on his face was a picture to behold
It left a vivid memory in my mind that I have often told.

So Mums and Dads pick a name to do your children proud
And when asked what it is they will shout it clear and loud.

Oh dear, I am glad the latest DGD is called Olive! And the surname bears no resemblance to anything like Oil!

Where I worked I had access to many weird and wonderful names.

The footballer brothers Gary and Phil Neville's father is Neville Neville.
I think that he had a grocer's shop in Leicester.

No 1 son has a very unusual name but says he has never experienced any trouble with it. Hallelujah, as it was very significant for us. No 2's was little known when he was bestowed but is totally in love with it. When he encounters someone with the same name he always asks how old they are then puffs his chest out that he was 'first'. Crazy guy but that is undoubtedly inherited!

FannyCornforth Fri 30-Apr-21 12:57:27

Oh Kim, I really want to know your sons' names now!
I'm in a similar position to DS2, I am an older than the vast majority of women with my name (which you know!)
Although I am extremely fond of being called Fanny' now smile

My mother went to school with a Richard Sole. When he grew up he went into the family butchers business. He bought a van for deliveries and had the words “R. Sole Butcher” emblazoned on the sides.

There is a lady in a group I am in called Di Young. One of my distant cousins was an Olive Green. My daughter named her daughter a very unusual name which is gorgeous. I have never come across it before . It is based on a Medieval Anglo Saxon name. Can’t say it because she might turn up on google !

Loislovesstewie Fri 30-Apr-21 13:09:43

I knew a Theresa Green!
